3rd Gen Camaro - Fox-Body Mustang (the good, bad and the ugly)
Most car guys don't know the difference between the 230hp G92 optioned
models, or the 5-speed and automatic models, or the 170hp lackluster TBI
versions (not to be confused with TPI versions)... Mustang guys smoke the 170hp TBI
models, as well as the "run of the mill" TPI automatic models, and believe
they can do this to any and all. Well, not all 3rd Gen F-bodies are created
equal. Optioned from the factory with the 230hp TPI (not TBI) engine,
manual 5-speed tranny and 3.42 gears, these 3rd Gen F-body sleepers gave
5.0 Mustangs absolute hell.
In 1990 the G92 option code became a full performance package rather than
simply a rear axle option as in previous model years... GM also offered an
answer to the Saleen Mustangs by way of option 1LE, which
consisted of the G92 optioned without A/C and other creature comforts, and
the addition of Corvette brakes and other road racing equipment.
About the only way an IROC-Z Camaro could take out a 5.0L Mustang from this era was with
the Tuned Port Induction and addition of these performance options: G92,
1LE, L98 or B4C.
The TBI powered Camaro
were not at all in the same league as the performance version TPI Camaro, or 5.0 Mustang, these 170hp TBI models were
GM's economy de-tuned versions and were around 50-60 less horsepower versus the
performance optioned TPI models. These non-performing models gave the 3rd
Gen F-bodies a bad rep on the street... many think that these were the
example of 3rd Gen F-bodies, when in fact, and unlike Ford, GM offered many
models, with many engines, camshafts and rear-gear ratios...

Stock 3rd Gen Camaros (170hp TBI vs 230hp TPI vs 245hp TPI)
Not all 3rd Gen models were created equal... they ranged in horsepower from 170hp on up
to 245hp. From the economy version 170hp L03 TBI 5.0 to the hot version
230hp LB9 5.0 TPI manual 5-speed model with G92 option and the 245hp L98
5.7 TPI with G92 option. This is just to open a few eyes out there on the
many different options and engines these cars had back in the late-'80s and

Teal to Black 1992 RS Camaro Project Restoration Slideshow
Here is a slideshow of the work that was done on my Camaro. Originally teal with tan
interior, and gets a complete makeover of black with black/gray interior.
It took about a year to and costed under $2,000! Got a cheap paint job from
a local auto body & paint place, and it looks great, and I've been taking
great care of the paint ever since. I got the hood and interior and the
silver RS badges all on Craigslist for under 100 dollars...big money saver
there. The interior, seats and carpet were from an 1984 Camaro. The plastic pieces were
all painted with duplicolor vinyl spray and has held up great. It needed
minor rust repair on the floor boards, it was patched up and chemical
blocked from coming back quickly. I have been customizing it with the
purple lights, and a big sound system, and still don't think I'm done yet ,
LOL. It's an ongoing fun project. Hope you enjoy, would like some comments
on what you think.
