Looking around Wolfburg's Zeithaus Musem, Christoph Bauer discovers one of the more innovative sports cars of the 1950s: the Lotus Elite. Just over a thousand of this model were built between 1957 and 1963. Founder of Lotus Colin Chapman ventured into new technical territory with this model. The body and the chassis were constructed completely from fiberglass parts, which were then fused together. 1970 Lotus Elan S4, first start attempt after 5-year total restoration
5 years ago, buddy Sean took his Lotus Elan S4 (The "Brotus") off the road for a water-pump replacement. He then embarked on an epic total restoration mission on the car. Although it has (frustratingly!) taken him five times longer than anticipated, here we see the very first attempt to start the completely rebuilt engine. This really IS the first attempt at starting, with two batteries, to supply the required amps to turn over a very tight motor. The smoke you see in the video is simply some paint burning off the Exhaust manifold. Great job Sean - and I can't wait to blow the doors off the Elan with my 911 race car, out at Ruapuna Raceway this summer. :)

Lotus Elan +2 FOR SALE
This is my Lotus Elan +2 built in 1972 and registered in 1973, therefore it's classed as a historical vehicle and qualifies for free road tax. The mileage is currently 38,000 miles with a folder showing the repairs and maintenance going back to 1973 with old MOTs showing the increase in mileage until the car was taken off road 10 years ago and recommissioned last year. It's currently taxed and MOT'd and is in daily use, it has never failed to start and it runs and drives beautifully. Everything works as it should including interior lights, door puddle lights, headlamps (that have been converted to halogen bulbs), the door locks, clock, ambient temperature, rev-counter, speedo, electric windows and has the original working radio. All the electrics are good and it is currently running on an electronic ignition system and a Lucas high power coil. It runs on unleaded fuel. The cooling fan has been replaced to a nine inch fan that fits directly in the front of the radiator. I have sat in heavy traffic on a hot day with no overheating issues whatsoever. The heaters work on both the hot and the cold position. The heater rear window also works which is excellent for defrosting the rear screen on those cold winter mornings. The wheels are steel knock-ons with the chrome outer rims and five brand new 165 R13 Goodyear GT80 tyres. The brake discs and pads have been replaced all around. The discs are the drilled and grooved type that give excellent braking. The callipers and brake pipes have all been replaced and are all as good as new. The car has been fully serviced including spark plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, gearbox oil, diff oil and brake fluid. The car was resprayed in 1981 at David May Motor Services, according to an invoice I have. It still looks presentable and shines but as with all of these vehicles there are some blisters, small lines and imperfections but overall the car looks fantastic but would benefit from a re-spray if so required. The chassis is in excellent condition and has been fully professionally under-sealed. All the seatbelt points are strong and good. The body has never been separated from the chassis as you would expect from a low mileage vehicle. It has never been restored, only maintained. The car is an absolute pleasure to drive. It is an original vehicle with low mileage and a future investment. I will put a full years MOT on the car for the sale. The road tax is free, so you can get that whenever you like, but it is currently taxed until the end of August.
