Isuzu mu-X vs Toyota Fortuner - Head 2 Head
With the rainy season bringing us floods and rough roads, the midsize SUV is one of many ways to travel in less than ideal conditions. A high ride height and ladder-frame construction also makes the midsize SUV a tough family car, ready to take on whatever the challenges the road ahead offers. From Isuzu, we have the Mu-X which is a popular choice for consumers looking for a high-content, high-value package thanks to its array of standard features. Representing Toyota is the Fortuner which has been a hit with buyers since the all-new model debuted earlier this year. So, Toyota or Isuzu? This week's Head to Head will help you choose. For this edition of head to head, we put the spotlight on two popular contenders in the mid-size SUV segment. Also known as pickup platform vehicles, we pit the Toyota Fortuner and Isuzu Mu-X and compare them spec by spec. Let's first take a look under the hood. The Fortuner gets Toyota's new GD series diesel engines which is available in two forms, along with a gas engine. For the 4x2 models, these are powered by a 2.4 liter D-4D turbodiesel with an output of 150 PS and 400 Nm of torque or a 2.7 liter gas engine with Dual VVT-i. Gas Fortuners have a power output of 163 PS and 245 Nm of torque. 4x2 Fortuners can be optioned with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic with sequential control. The 4x4 models meanwhile get the larger 2.8 liter D-4D turbodiesel engine. It produces 177 PS and 450 Nm of torque and is exclusively paired to a 6 speed automatic with sequential control. Moving to the Isuzu Mu-X, there are two engine options available. First is a 2.5 liter direct-injection turbodiesel with 136 PS and 320 Nm of torque. The most powerful engine option in the Mu-X is a 3.0 liter direct-injection turbodiesel, also with four cylinder. It puts out 163 PS and 380 Nm of torque. Both 2.5 liter and 3.0 liter Mu-X models are available with two wheel drive and four wheel drive. Transmission options for the 2.5 liter models are a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. The 3.0 is only available with a 5-speed automatic. Both SUVs follow the traditional body on frame construction as both are based on existing pickups, namely the Isuzu D-MAX and Toyota Hilux. Also common in this class is their suspension setups. The Mu-X and Montero Sport ride on a double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rigid axle setup with coil springs for the rear. In their 4x4 variants, both have shift on the fly four wheel drive systems. To engage 4WD, both utilize an electronic dial to select various drive modes, namely 2WD, 4Hi and 4Lo.
