2012 BMW K1600GT vs. 2011 Kawasaki Concours 14 ABS

Sport-Touring taken to the next level BMW and Kawasaki have long battled in the sport-touring category and have gone head-to-head in shootouts on this site since 1996. This time BMW takes aim at the Kawasaki Concours 14 with some heavy artillery in the form of the new K1600GT. For full review: http://www.motorcycle.com/shoot-outs/2012-bmw-k1600gt-vs-2011-kawasaki-concours-14-abs-video-91105.html Sport-touring riders don't carry city maps in their bags. They're the type that pulls out a state — or even country — map and places pins at the start and end points. In between, they search for the longest squiggly lines they can find, preferably in succession. They're a discerning type, too. In order to ride long distances, the chosen motorcycle has to be plenty comfy yet have provisions to carry everything needed for the journey. Not only that, but sometimes their steed serves as the only companion on the trip, so it also needs to inspire, motivate and thrill. 2014 Leather Baggers Shootout
Cruisers have always been about the essence of motorcycling, stripping motorcycles down to their core: an engine, a seat, a pair of wheels and little else. Naturally, when thinking about the essential elements of motorcycling, thoughts of the open road come to mind. The dream of packing just what you need on your bike and pointing the front wheel towards destinations unknown looms large in many cruiser riders' hearts. Test Ride - 2010 Concours 14
What my friend was telling me: First he said that with this much power, and fuel injection, it's quite snappy. You'll take off and right away you'll be doing 30 and with the shaft drive, it's so smooth you won't even know it. Then he pointed out that Pazzo shorties, due to the width of the electrical controls, actually turn into 2 finger clutch and brake. He prefers 3 finger so he said he would probably be getting the full length pazzo levers to replace these. When the kickstand is up the left footpeg is in the way of putting it down... so wearing MC boots it's kind of hard to get the sidestand down. Minor inconvenience. Then he explained how to use the Kipass key system. Push the key down with the fob near the bike and then you can turn it on. Then he explained how he liked the positive neutral finder in the transmission and I then complained how the Hyosung doesn't have that so you end up working hard to find neutral while the engine is running. He pointed out that, unlike the FZ1, the clutch pull engages about 2/3 of the way out and with the extra torque, you don't even need to use the throttle when starting to take off. The bike will just pull you up to a few mph without any throttle input and it has enough torque to do this easily. He showed me how to use the electrical windshield, turn off traction control and ABS, and how to use the mode switch to scroll through the different screens on the display, including how to turn on ECO mode on the 2010+ models which leans the fuel mapping out slightly for improved economy. He lastly pointed out that the bike is top heavy, but still handles great. As long as you are vertical when trying to stop, or make sure to put your feet down just before you stop, then you shouldn't have any issue keeping the rubber side down. Despite the weight it's balanced quite well.
