Replacing the Camshaft Synchronizer and Positioning Sensor on a 99 Ford Ranger 3.0 engine. Tools needed: 1/4 drive Ratchet, 1/4 drive 6" extension, 1/4 drive 5.5mm socket or 7/32 socket, 10mm socket, flashlight, and some fresh engine oil (same kind you have in your engine), and some wrags or papertowels. Time to do the job, about 30 minutes.. Costs: Motorcraft Cam Sync from RockAuto $97, Delphi Cam Positioning Sensor from NAPA for $39, OR Take it to a Dealership and pay $300 or more!! Ford ranger finally turns over
My Ford Ranger was dead for a weak, and was driving me crazy. Eventually I found out it was the crank sensor that went bad, and caused the truck to die on me. While trying to remove it, it broke off, with the mount .. So i had to fab up a mount for the new cps. Just had to put a video up , truck even runs smoother now with new coil packs - wires - plugs - ecu - cps and cam position senor.. next is the shackles, and the fuel pump .. Truck has 180k.

The car died on the road and was towed in.. The shop tested out the vehicle, and found that every time the ECM harness was moved by the crank sensor, the engine would start. This prompted the garage to replace the crank sensor. The vehicle started and ran, but after a short drive the vehicle would cut out again. By moving the ECM harness near the crank sensor, the vehicle restarted. At this point the shop decided to replace the crank sensor connector. After the connector was wired in place, the vehicle no longer started. There was a strong possibility that the ECM harness finally went south. The shop tried to locate the harness problem, but nothing panned out. Upon arrival, the tech working on the vehicle verified the complaint by showing me no spark at the spark plug tester, and no injector operation at the Noid light. At this point, I decided to hook up my multi channel scope to sweep the harness and make sure all the powers and grounds were fine. In order for an ECM to trigger the coils, it will need Battery, Ignition, and Ground feed. This will be followed by a Crank and Cam signal input, and if all is well the ECM will initiate spark. When I swept the harness, I discovered a lack of 5 Volt reference output from the ECM. This indicated either a bad ECM, or the possibility of a shorted 5 Volt reference line. I checked the 5 Volt reference line first, and discovered that it was indeed shorted to ground. With a shorted 5 Volt reference, most Ford systems will ..... My old '99 Ranger which had around 115K miles on it. Don't own the truck anymore but if you have a remedy for this problem, would be glad to know, especially for future reference!!
