Presented by D&M Motorsports, hosted by Chris Moran Why the letter "F" in the new V-8-powered, 416-horsepower Lexus IS F? Simple: Toyota's luxury brand and the letter F have a long history. In the mid-1980s, the Lexus luxury division was then just a classified notepad document codenamed "Circle F." The first Lexus LS400 of 1989 was known internally as the "F1" or "Flagship." And the stylized Fs on the 2008 IS F are drawn, it's said, to mimic a few hairpin turns of Toyota's Higashi-Fuji test track. It also keeps us grinning through hard track laps, even though the frequent fill-ups of premium were inhaled by street driving at the rate of 16 mpg. We'll have to wait until March, 2008, when the IS F goes on sale at an expected price around $59,000 to see how many buyers are interested in a wicked-performing Lexus. Developed in cooperation with Yamaha, the IS F's engine, or the 2UR-GSE as Toyota calls the 416-hp variant of the 389-hp 5.0-liter V-8 found in the LS600h hybrid, sans hybrid gear, is peakier, actually losing 17 pound-feet of torque on the operating table as the changes pushed the horsepower and torque peak higher up the revs. Solid lifters and titanium intake valves with 10 percent more lift reside in new higher-flow cylinder heads. At full throttle above 3400 rpm, a barn door in the box snaps open with vacuum released from a small reservoir, and the unleashed induction noise is raw and thrilling. Polished paddles put your fingers in charge when you wish it. And they'll be busy, the swift-revving engine and ratio-stuffed, eight-speed automatic gearbox bringing forth the redline cutoff with annoying frequency. With all that engine fettling, the warning beep reminding you to upshift at 6400 rpm and the cut-out at 6800 rpm feel a bit low. The new 414-hp BMW M3's engine screams all the way to 8400 rpm. Despite the bling of braided-aluminum trim on the doors and shifter console, temperance rules indoors. Blue-lit gauges and blue seat stitching, alloy pedals, a digital gear-position display, and the subtle F logo on the wheel are the differentiators that drivers see. The base car's rear bench is divided in the IS F into two non-folding buckets with a ski pass-through. At leisure speeds, the air is hushed, Lexus-like, with just a distant snort from the engine and the extra thrum of the fat summer Michelins disturbing the peace. Given the low profile of the rubber mounted to the 19-inch forged aluminum rims, the ride is tightly controlled but commendably mellow. The ride-and-handling balance is perhaps the IS F's biggest achievement. It makes allowances for road fissures and drops the body into holes with cushioned lurches. It also permits the 3800-pound car some restrained roll through the esses but not enough to wither confidence. The IS F's steering rack accurately puts tires where they're needed and provides talk-back, albeit faint, on how things are holding. And hold they do, with excellent grip. The all-important sport button also perks up throttle response and relaxes the stability-control system to allow some controlled tail-out action. Lexus also allows you to shut the system completely off, but the shutdown can only be called for while at full stop. Brembo-sourced front calipers on broad cross-drilled rotors deliver solid braking but with a soft pedal. The muted interior, the slightly watery controls, the heavy price tag; the IS F is at core a Lexus with extra muscle, not as raw as the BMW M3 or Mercedes C63 AMG. The next steps for F may decide if the performance sub-brand thrives or is only a brief experiment

http://www.SupercarNetwork.com Come for a ride with Chris Moran in a Ferrari 430 Scuderia Novitec Twin-Supercharged producing 717 horsepower! Presented by D&M Motorsports, hosted by Chris Moran It takes cojones to tuck into a new Ferrari in hopes of ending up with an improved street machine. Pininfarina showcars don't really count, since that's like cheating. And race-prepared GT2-class racing cars don't count either, since we don't see any Le Mans racers parked in front of sushi bars or Circle K. But the 2009 Ferrari 430 Scuderia by Novitec Rosso is another thing entirely. While a Ferrari 430 Scuderia impresses, this twin-supercharged Novitec Rosso enters the territory of shock and awe. Novitec's Wolfgang Hagedorn does business in the German town of Stetten (an undeniably manure-perfumed burg in the German province of Swabia, not far from Stuttgart). He's a hell of a businessman, but he's still what many non-risk-takers would call a nut case. After years of up-rating Fiats and Alfa Romeos (not hard to do in the 1990s), Hagedorn sucked it up in 2001 and bought three Ferrari 360 Modenas for tinkering purposes. At the 2003 Frankfurt Auto Show he revealed his supercharged Ferrari 360 Modena by Novitec Rosso and orders quickly appeared. Since then, Hagedorn has really made his Ferraris true specialty models, much more than simple tuner cars. And so here is the newest Novitec Rosso, Hagedorn's improved Ferrari 430 Scuderia, the V8-powered berlinetta that beats the lap time set at Ferrari's Fiorano test track by the overly worshiped Ferrari Enzo . How can the 2009 Ferrari 430 Scuderia by Novitec Rosso possibly improve on a car already so impossibly super? Heavy Breathing A look through the polycarbonate rear glass (so like a sneeze guard at the buffet table) in the Ferrari 430 Scuderia's rear deck reveals all. Here are two compact, belt-driven, Rotrex centrifugal Superchargers fed by two immense carbon-fiber air boxes. Two front-mounted water-cooled Intercoolers (with double the efficiency of the units that Novitec formerly specified in this sort of application) help keep the intake air at the right temperature.This engine conversion is referred to as the Novitec Race Bi-Compressor Engine kit, and the full deal runs $89,999 through Novitec's full-service importer CEC. Getting more out of the 2009 Ferrari 430 Scuderia evidently doesn't take much, as each Rotrex screwgie hits its max Boost at 7.0 psi. It's all available in the twitch of an ankle from low revs all the way to 8,350 rpm, where the horsepower count surges from 503 hp to 708 hp. Meanwhile, the torque has been wrenched from a measly 347 pound-feet up to 533 lb-ft at 6,250 rpm. Novitec has managed to keep all the heat-inducing friction and combustion in control by applying competition-level cooling upgrades. The Ferrari-engineered 136E V8 engine (which also sits in the Alfa Romeo 8C and assorted Maseratis) is otherwise stock. So is the Scuderia's six-speed automated manual F1-Superfast2 gearbox; and its shift times remain wildly quick going up or down (70 milliseconds in the Race, CT-Off and CST-Off settings of the manettino mounted on the steering wheel). Naturally, the ECU has been fiddled with by a local German fiddler to Boost the engine's self-confidence, while the port fuel injectors are now higher-flow units, a fact that further ruins the Scuderia's already sufficiently ruinous mpg rating. But if you whine about this mpg thing at a barbecue for Novitec Rosso owners, you're probably a waiter from the catering company. Nimble Jack While the technicians at Novitec's facility in Stetten have fiddled not one bit with the wheel alignment, new stiffer springs all around slightly alter the over-the-road feel of the five suspension settings afforded by the manettino, and the overall ride height is 1.2 inches lower than that specified by Maranello. The Ferrari MagneRide dampers are too complicated to modify, so the settings are the same as before. Hosted by: Chris Moran The boss came into my office the other day and asked if I wanted to write the road test on Ferrari's latest-and-greatest GT machine, the 599 GTB Fiorano. What was I going to say? "Gee, you know, I think I'm busy that week...." Yeah...right. Anyone with half a heartbeat and an able right foot would leap at the chance to spend some quality throttle-time with Maranello's second most powerful (to the Enzo) street car ever. And this is no creampuff, despite Ferrari calling the 599 a Gran Turismo. Its front-mounted 6.0-liter all-aluminum V-12 positioned well aft of the front axle is serious business, derived from the much vaunted, limited-production Enzo powerplant. Its power is breathtaking: 611 bhp at 7600 rpm and 448 lb.-ft. of torque at 5600. The 599 may be down 39 bhp to the Enzo, but as we found at the track, that didn't matter one bit. Using a special launch mode shown to us by a Ferrari test driver on hand, the computer handles traction control and shifting. Launched in this manner, the 599 squats down hard on its rear 305/35ZR-20 Pirelli P Zero tires, lifts its nose and, with nary a bit of wheelspin, pins you back into the seat as it explodes to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds. Yes, that's right, quicker than an Enzo. That's also quicker than the McLaren F1, the Porsche Carrera GT and 911 turbo and the Saleen S7 Twin turbo, and a tie with the 650-bhp Ruf Rt 12. How is this possible? The special launch mode, for one thing, along with the latest 6-speed F1 gearbox (called F1 Superfast) that accomplishes shifts in just 100 milliseconds, versus the F430's 150 milliseconds and the 575M Maranello's 250 milliseconds. And those super-sticky P Zeros, developed specifically for the 599, with a tread-wear rating of 60. (That's R-compound adhesion, as most performance tires exceed 200.)The 599 is not just quick off the line, but forges relentlessly up to speed, running the quarter mile in 11.2 sec. at 129.3 mph, eventually topping out at a claimed 205 mph. It's bested by 0.1 sec. through the quarter by the Enzo, and, of course, it's no match for the Bugatti Veyron (2.6 sec. to 60 and a full second quicker in the quarter-mile—and $1.4 million, versus the 599's base price of $278,345). How does the 599 GTB handle? Thanks to front and rear forged-aluminum double-wishbone suspension and the first use of magneto-rheological dampers in a Ferrari road car (developed in collaboration with Delphi), the 599 exhibits sports-car handling in the guise of a GT. This damper system reacts four times faster than traditional versions, according to Ferrari, and reduces brake dive, acceleration squat and body roll. Although the steering was lighter than expected around the skidpad, the 599 circled at an impressive 0.97g. Its slalom speed of 71.2 mph is impressive in anyone's book, even more so when you consider its curb weight (3865 lb.) and the length of its 108.3-in. wheelbase. It's not the easiest car with which to navigate the orange cones, showing a tendency to swing its tail out if steering inputs are too abrupt. On the road, the 599 simply dazzles, and if you find fault with what can only be called a "slightly harsh" ride with a bit more road noise than your Honda Accord's, then you're buying the wrong car. Throw the 599 into a corner and it just flat sticks, providing excellent feedback.
