Convertible Top Installation: 1969 - 1970 Cougar / Mustang
In this episode, we tackle the daunting task of installing a convertible top on a 1969 Mercury Cougar. Instead of stumbling through it ourselves, we watch a professional do the installation and take note of some of the details and tricks involved in the process. Javier was there to help and translate, and the end result was a great looking black convertible top.

PLEASE: See the video up until the end. I've added some comments "after
the top was removed that may be helpful to you. ALSO: You can skip to
appx 5:50 if you want to "get right to specifics".
FYI: For the adhesive for the flaps for the new top - you can use 2-sided
carpet tape or a 2-sided Duct Tape to secure the flaps. 1-3/8" width is
perfect. (There is not really any stress on the flaps. they just hold the
top in place when it's being retracted).
Door Panel Backer Boards - How To Replace (1967-1970 Cougar)
Since door panels aren't reproduced for Cougars, good used originals are
valuable. Sometimes, the front vinyl side is usable, but the backer boards
are toast. Luckily, there's a solution. We now carry brand new,
better-than-stock backer boards made from a more durable pressboard
material. We have a version for 1967-1968 Cougars, as well as another
version for 1969-1970 Cougars. See links below.
In this video, we show you how to separate a vinyl door panel from its old
backer board, repair the metal hanger piece, and reattach it and the vinyl
to the new backer board. We also cover removal & replacement of the inner
beltline strip (the felt-lined trim that touches the door glass).

1969 Glue-In Glass: The Comprehensive Repair Guide
1969 and the first part of 1970 was an epic fail for Ford on all its
intermediate line. Gluing the glass in instead of bolting it in was one of
many cost cutting measures, and it just did not go well. In this
comprehensive video Don shows us how to service just about every piece
front and rear on a 1969 Cougar. Don also shows the many differences 1969
vs early 1970 and late 1970. Keep in mind all the tips shown here directly
apply to a 69-70 Mustang
Coupe or convertible; many will also apply to the 69-70 Fastback. Even if
you choose not to do the repairs shown here yourself the information is
invaluable and you should insist on having your tech review this video
before proceeding on your car.

Rusty Roof Replacement - 1968 Cougar
If you have an old car that came with a vinyl top, chances are that you
have some rust issues in the roof. This was the case with Andrew's car - a
1968 Mercury Cougar that his grandparents bought brand new in '68. In this
video, Andrew takes matters into his own hands to replace his rusted roof
skin with a solid donor roof from another car. He is by no means a
restoration expert, just an amateur trying to save some money and save his

Mustang Convertible Top Hydraulic Repair 1965-1973
There's nothing worse than a faulty power top on your Mustang convertible and getting
caught in the rain. The hydraulic system consists of the switch, motor,
lines, and the convertible top cylinders. For repair on our 1971 Mustang, Bill installs a new
hydraulic cylinder and a Scott Drake convertible top hose kit.
To install the new cylinders, you'll begin by removing the back seat
cushions and quarter trim panels. Follow Bill's instructions to disconnect
the old cylinder and remove it from your Mustang. Disconnect the lines next
and remove them, and then install the new Scott Drake hose kit.
Installing the cylinder to the lines is simple, screwing on the longer hose
to the bottom of the cylinder and the shorter hose to the top. You'll then
need to fill and bleed the system, as demonstrated in the video. Once the
system is filled and bled, make sure everything is dry and bolt the motor
back and install the new cylinders. Put the trim panels back and the seat
and you're finished. Total installation takes up to three hours.

Headliner Installation (Bow Type) - 1968 Mercury Cougar
In this video, we watch a professional install a headliner on Andrew's '68
Cougar. The process is the same for Mustangs and many other old Fords
with bow-type headliners. It's the type of job that you can do yourself,
with some patience and finesse.

Front Suspension & Chassis Upgrades - '68 Cougar / Mustang
In this video, we show some of the ways you can easily stiffen your car's
chassis and upgrade your front suspension. Using Andrew's '68 Cougar as a
guinea pig, we bolt on, and weld on, some simple parts that will make a big
difference in reducing the torsional flex that these front ends are prone
to, as well as improving the integrity of the shock towers.

Vinyl Top Installation - '68 Cougar
In this video, we watch as a professional installs a vinyl top on a 1968
Mercury Cougar. After observing the process, we think this is a job that
the average do-it-yourself-er can handle. It does require a certain amount
of finesse, but not as much as a headliner installation requires (see our
other video on that subject).
