The Unfortunate History of the AMC Pacer
Behind all the jokes and insults, the AMC Pacer is actually a car with a
great deal of history. It began as radical new design from an underdog
company. In an attempt to combat the big, bland, boxy cars from Detroit's
"Big Three," little American Motors Corporation decided to build something
a little different. Their one-eyed car stylist Dick Teague proposed a
small, wide car with big windows and smooth areodynamics. Americans had
never seen anything like it.
This in-depth documentary tells the true story of the Pacer. Unbeknownst
to many, the car persevered through manufacturing setbacks, government
regulations, and many other troubles. Featuring a ton of old car
advertisements and rare footage of AMC's factory, the film helps paint a
picture of the Pacer's world. Director Joe Ligo sits down with AMC stylist
Vincent Geraci, author Patrick Foster, and television personalities John
Davis and Pat Goss from PBS's MotorWeek.
AMC 1980 AMX Spirit restoration
This is my 1980 AMC Spirit AMX. I finished restoring this car in July of
2002. This car has new paint,interior,transmission,3:73 rear and a built up
360 AMC engine producing close to 400 hp. I sold this car to finish my 86
Corvette. I miss it very much. This car had the Exhaust turned down towards the ground. It
sounded real bassy like rolling thunder. This car was super fast. I took it
to the 100th Rambler anniversary in Kenosha, WI in July 2002. With Group 19
AMC club. We also took it to Long Island, New York one summer, and I
cruised my old neighborhood. Its sad to say that I sold it to a young man
and the car is getting abused. I saw some chips and scratches on it. AMC
made awesome engines.

77 AMX introduction
To complement Collectible Automobile Magazine's article on the 1977-78 AMX,
Torq-O mined another gem from the Torq-O Media Archive.
Here's a segment from the 1977 AMC Dealer Introduction Show featuring the
introduction of the Hornet AMX.
Back in those days, dealer announcement shows were Broadway-style
productions with Broadway actors. The Fonz-like character is a direct
"adaptation" from the Happy Days TV show complete with non-1950's hair
(just like Chachi's!).
