1973 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia & 1966 Volkswagen bug Drag Racing Racelegal.com 3-23-2012
Friday night at racelegal.com drag racing a 1973 volkswagen karmann ghia
with a 2352 and a 1966 volkswagen beetle with a 2187 air cooled engine.
The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is a 2+2 coupe and convertible marketed from
1955 to 1974 by Volkswagen -- combining the chassis and mechanicals of the
Type 1 (Beetle), styling by Luigi Segre of the Italian carrozzeria Ghia,
and hand-built bodywork by German coach-builder Karmann.
The Karmann Ghia was internally designated the Type 14. Volkswagen later
introduced a variant in 1961, the Type 34 -- featuring angular bodywork and
based on the newly introduced Type 3 platform.
Production doubled soon after its introduction, becoming the car
most-imported into the U.S. American industrial designer Walter Dorwin
Teague selected the Type 14 for his list of the world's most beautifully
Over 445,000 Karmann Ghias were produced in Germany over the car's
production life -- not including the Type 34 variant. Karmann Brazil
produced 41,600 cars locally for South America between 1962 and 1975.
The Volkswagen Beetle, officially called the Volkswagen Type 1 (or
informally the Volkswagen Bug), is an economy car produced by the German
auto maker Volkswagen (VW) from 1938 until 2003. With over 21 million
manufactured in an air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive
configuration, the Beetle is the longest-running and most-manufactured car
of a single design platform anywhere in the world.

BackyardBuild Summer 2012 Turbo VW Bug preview.mpg
Here is a preview of how the car sits now, summer 2012. I have about 95% of
the bodywork done and have coated everything with 2 layers of black epoxy
primer. Lots more tune up has yielded a good running late model classic VW
beetle. As you can see I have a bunch of work left to do on the interior,
but all the gauges and lighting function. To beef everything up on the
3SGTE engine I had to utilize an aftermarket ECU, I chose the Vi-Pec. The
last part of the video shows what this setup can do. She's fast...
