Transmission Repair - CD4E Transmission Teardown Inspection
On this video we see how to disassemble one of this units. I also explain
the main issues with this unit as I go along with the tear-down. There's an
assembly video coming soon.
You will find this unit on the following vehicles;
1989 Mazda MX-6 F2 Head Gasket Time Lapse
'89 mx6 I've owned since '00. The F2; not the F2T. The oil & water were
mixing through the head gasket, so I replaced it. I decided to record it
just to keep me from dragging my feet too much. Thanks for watching. Enjoy.

This shows a minor scrape on a Mazda Miata. The scratch was feathered out,
primed and painted using BASF paint. There are many ways to get the job
done, this is what was done here:
1. The scratch was feathered out using 280 grit paper until each color was
seperated around 1/2".
2. Next it was backsanded to allow space for the primer to adhere.
3. It was primed with 2 coats of Glasurit 285-10/20 direct to metal
urethane primer and allowed to dry. It was primed with a devilbiss
finishline HVLP gun with a 1.6 tip.
4. Next it was blocksanded using 320 paper, then final sanded with some
400-500 grit paper. Using a block is optional there but recommended.
5. After taping it up it was painted using RM Diamont basecoat in 3 coats.
Each coat was allowed to flash about 5 minutes before the next one. Then 15
minutes before clearing. An Iwata LPH400 was used to apply the basecoat at
about 20 psi.
6. The clear coat used here was BASF DC5335 Glamour clear. It was applied
in 2 coats with about 10 minutes between coats. It was applied using an
Iwata W400 with about 26 PSI at the gauge.
A few dirt nibs were colorsanded and polished afterwards.
Cd4e Meenan transmission
This video is of a CD4E transaxle. This transmission is used in a variety
of applications including Ford Escapes, Mercury Mariner ,Mazda Tributes,
and a variety of passenger cars. The CD4E transmission is used because it
is a compact design that fits many front wheel drive applications. The CD4E
transmission has five sets of clutches, two sprags and one band. Many of
the problems we see here at Meenan Transmission that occur with the CD4E
transmissions are control related. This transmission has a control solenoid
pack that contains multiple solenoids that control shift functions,
pressure rise, and torque converter lock up functions. This solenoid pack
can malfunction and this can cause some drivability concerns. It can also
cause a malfunction indicator light to come on or the over drive light to
blink. The other more common control related problem is with the pressure
regulator section of the valve body. This occurs over time and can lead to
a condition where line pressure can go beyond normal and acceptable levels.
This over pressure condition can cause internal parts failure. This will
likely require removal of the transmission and disassembly for full
evaluation. Some of the parts that are prone for failure the forward/direct
clutch drum and the overdrive band. When we rebuild CD4E at Meenan
Transmissions we take all steps necessary to ensure that a repeat
occurrence of these failures can't take place by performing control system
modifications that address the route cause of the parts failure. CD4E
transmissions after they are rebuilt and modified have proven to be a
trouble free reliable transmission and can provide years of trouble free
