Budget V8 street Commodore
Al’s Holden VZ Commodore is a great example of a budget LS build. Not lavish in any one area it shows you can piece together a quick street V8 without a huge outlay. One of only 28 VZ Executive models sold with a factory 6L, Al has performed much of the work on the car himself. 2006 Holden VZ Commodore Executive (factory V8) GM L76 6L V8 engine Hand ported LS3 cylinder heads Howards hydraulic roller camshaft LS3 inlet manifold Genie 1 7/8in extractors, twin 3in Exhaust TCI 3200rpm stall converter, 4L65E trans by Hi-Flow Truetrac LSD, Motive 4.11:1 gears Pump 98-ron unleaded fuel, MT 235mm street radials Power: 315kW / 422hp @ wheels Built at home, driven to and from the track Get your track gear! 10-second LS1 Street Commodore built in 2 weeks
Mark Sass has transformed this once V6 nugget VX Holden Commodore into a tough 10-second street car in a mere two weeks. The 3.8L V6 was ditched in favour of a 346ci LS1 engine, with the only internal change being a Nitrous spec camshaft. Other modifications include a 200hp Nitrous system, FAST intake manifold, Holden 3.7:1 LSD rear end (still retains factory IRS) and a turbo400 3spd transmission. Mark drove the car to Calder Park on skinny MT 235 Drag Radials, ran a solid 10.3-second pass and drove home, the car's best MPH was 133mph.
