Drag Racing Crash Tragedy

An Australian driver is in shock, feeling ``numb'', after his drag racer slammed into a crowd in the United States, killing six people. Queenslander Troy Critchley, 36, was driving in a charity event in Selmer, Tennessee, on Saturday, when his drag racing car skidded off the road and into hundreds of spectators, who were not protected by guard rails. Two girls aged 15 and one aged 17 were among the six killed as Critchley performed an ``exhibition burnout'' - when a drag racer spins his tyres to make them heat up and smoke - at a Cars for Kids charity event. Up to 18 more were injured in the collision, which sent bodies ``flying into the air'', said Selmer Police Chief Neal Burks. Amateur video of the crash showed the car's engine revving loudly before the vehicle sped down a highway in a cloud of smoke. After a few hundred metres the car skidded off the road.

Various of memorial at accident site STORYLINE: As police investigate a drag race accident that killed six people in Selmer, Tennessee on Saturday, new amateur video emerged showing the horror of the crowd as the car careened into the unsuspecting spectators. The video showed the car's engine revving loudly before the vehicle sped down the highway. After a few hundred feet, the smoking car skidded off the road and into the crowd. On Monday, investigators said it would take time to figure out exactly why the car went out of control. Tennessee Highway Patrol said they will look at everything surrounding Saturday's fatal accident. According to authorities, the victims were in their teens and early 20's. Twenty three others were injured, including a five-year-old boy. The crash occurred during a charity event for children in Selmer, about 80 miles (128 kilometres) east of Memphis, and has been an annual event in this small town for 18 years. Kyley Jones witnessed the incident. "It wasn't a pretty sight what I saw, I saw a few bodies flying. I took off running maybe to see if I could do something but when I ran up on the crowd and the people laying on the ground it all happened so quick and everything and what I saw, I just couldn't handle it," he said. Witnesses have questioned the decision to let the driver speed down the highway without guardrails that could have protected spectators. The driver was pro drag racer Troy Warren Critchley, an Australian drag racer now based in Wylie, Texas. He suffered minor injuries and was taken by car to a hospital, authorities said. Bruce Replogle's 15-year-old daughter, Scarlett, was killed in the accident. "It's a bad thing I hate if for all the families and everything, it's a sad time, it's just her time to go, the Lord wanted her and he took her, there's nothing else I can say," he said. District Attorney General Mike Dunavant said on Monday that he had not decided whether to bring criminal charges, but that it was still a possibility.
