The third generation BMW F13 (coupé) and F12 (convertible) were released for the 2012 model year at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show and New York Auto Show.
Early 6 Series Coupe models include 640i, 650i. 640d, 650i xDrive were later added.
6 Series Convertible was unveiled in 2011 BMW 2011 North American International Auto Show. Early US model include 650i. 640i was also available.
European models of 6 Series Coupe (640i xDrive, 650i xDrive, 640d xDrive), 6 Series Convertible (640i xDrive, 650i xDrive, 640d) were unveiled in 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.
BMW revealed the 6-Series Convertible on 18 November 2010. The folding top is still cloth as compared to the E93 3 Series convertible which is equipped with a metal roof. On 13 March 2011, BMW released pictures and details about the Coupe.
For the 2014 model year, the 6-series received a light facelift and updated engines.
The Exhaust manifolds and turbochargers are located between the banks of cylinders (i.e. on the "inside" of the V8) and the intake manifolds are located on the outside of the engine; this is the opposite of the traditional manifold arrangement for a V8. This new design creates a more compact engine package and reduces the width of the assembled engine, also decreasing the distance from the Exhaust manifolds to the turbochargers. The engine uses air-to-water Intercoolers, which are more efficient and provide a shorter air path than standard air-to-air Intercoolers.
Similar to the N54B30, the original N63B44 and S63 do not use the second generation Valvetronic technology found in other current engines. The principal advantage of Valvetronic is the reduction of intake vacuum, which is not an issue in the pressurized intake found in a turbo-charged engine. Valvetronic was added to updated variants of the engine for the 2012 BMW M5/M6 (S63TU) and then for the 2013 BMW 750i and 650i Gran Coupe.
In terms of performance, the N63 is a close match to the N73 V12 engine found in the previous-generation E65 760i/Li, so the V12 engine had to be redesigned with twin turbochargers for the F01 760i/Li in order to maintain its status as the flagship of the range

In this two part video series Otto will show you how to replace the valve
cover gasket on the M50, M52, M52TU, M56, M54, S50, S52 and S54 6-cylinder
BMW engines. These engines have been used in various 3, 5, X and Z models
from the early '90s through the mid '00s. Note that while these procedures
are shown on an E53 X5 (00-06) BMW with the M54 3.0 engine, they can also
be applied to the E36, E46, E34, E39, E60, E85 and E86 3, 5, X and Z
6-cylinder models. Some will look slightly different or have slightly
different hardware but, the basic points and procedures are the same.
Part 1 - Valve cover removal steps:
In this video we will remove the valve cover on a BMW 2002 3.0i X5. Part-2
covers the installation.

1) Some models require that the cowl HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air
Conditioning) air inlet tray be removed in order to allow full access to
the engine valve cover. This E53 X5 does not require removal of the cowl
2) Remove the engine trim cover. Pry out the two round trim plugs on the
trim cover. Remove the two 10mm nuts or bolts. Lift the plastic trim
cover off and set aside.
NOTE: This earlier "coil on plug" model has the coils secured into place
via studs and nuts. On these models, remove the two 10mm securing nuts and
pry the metal harness clamp upward to release the harness plug. The coil
can then be pulled up and removed. Later M54 engine used the later "pencil
style" coils. These coils do not have any bolts or nuts securing them in
place. They can just be pulled up and out. See the "pencil coil"

3) Release the securing clips and pull the harness plugs from the ignition
4) Remove the nuts or bolts securing the coil frames to the valve cover
and pull the coils up and out. See note above if you have the "pencil
coils" that do not have nut or bolt securing hardware.
5) Unclip the coil plug harness assembly and set aside. Unclip the oxygen
sensor harnesses and set aside.
6) Remove the valve cover securing nuts. Loosen and remove in an
expanding spiral pattern, starting in the middle of the valve cover.
7) Gently remove the valve cover. Be very careful if applying any prying.
this can easily crack the plastic valve covers.
8) Clean the cylinder head gasket mating surfaces with brake parts cleaner
and a clean cloth.
Now, click on to Part-2 and continue with the installation of the new valve
cover gaskets and replacement of the valve cover assembly.
