As one of the first modern retractable hardtop convertibles, the SLK followed the 1995 Mitsubishi 3000GT Spyder and preceded other retractable hardtops such as the Peugeot 206cc, Lexus SC, Pontiac G6 and the Chrysler Sebring. The SLK Vario-roof was first shown on the SLK II concept car at the 1994 Paris Motor Show.[1] The car went on sale two years later in Europe, and in 1997 in the US. The SLK is built in Bremen, Germany. The designation SLK derives from the company's design mission to create a roadster that was at once sporty, light and short — in German: Sportlich, Leicht und Kurz. The R172 represents the third generation of Mercedes-Benz SLK, and was launched in January 2011 with international sales starting spring 2011. It replaces the R171. The R172 continues the small luxury roadster concept that was initiated by the first SLK launched in 1996. The design follows the themes of both the first and second generation, but shares a new front look that is similar to the Mercedes-Benz SLS The launch range includes two 1.8 L engines in two states of tune, the SLK 200 with 184 bhp (137 kW; 187 PS) and the SLK 250 with 204 bhp (152 kW; 207 PS). The SLK 350 features a new Mercedes 3.5 L V6 direct-injection engine producing 306 bhp (228 kW; 310 PS) with seven-speed automatic and a stop-start feature.[3] An AMG version has been announced using a detuned, naturally-aspirated version of the M157 called the M152. http://www.eurocarnews.com - Merecedes Benz USA - The timeless, classic shape of the side profile with the classic roadster proportions embodies aesthetics of the highest caliber and is a visual cue to the sportiness and driving pleasure in store. Fine details show the care that has been taken by the Mercedes-Benz designers. For example, a molding conceals the trunk joint, so that the side line cannot get in the way, as it usually does with similar roof designs. The ventilation grilles in the front fenders with a chromed fin are reminiscent of the famous Mercedes-Benz roadsters of the 1950s. In the new SLK they form the perfect starting point for a feature line, which flows to the muscular rear fender, using light and shadow to add style and timeless aesthetics to the sides. Meanwhile the upper edge of the wide headlamps -- which for the first time boast all-LED technology -- also appears to flow into the feature line. Despite the most compact dimensions in its class, the 2012 SLK has generous interior dimensions. To achieve this, the designers have developed interior appointments that offer the driver and passenger the highest degree of quality and pure precision. The interior is characterized by stylish sportiness and genuine high-quality materials which have been processed with perfect precision and skilled craftsmanship. Standard brushed aluminum trim covers the center console; wood trim can be ordered as an option in high-gloss dark brown walnut. Four round, metallic air outlets integrated in the dashboard emphasize that this model truly belongs to the Mercedes-Benz sports car family, their shape being a nod to those in the SLS.
