barn find vega 1st run at St Thomas raceway park Shifter wasn't working
very well last run got 3 gear and run 11.99, then fixed the tach was 2000
rpm fast was shifting @7000 the tach read. but was only at 5000 just
starting to work oh well next year .

automatic, 4 lug car to a 350 sbc , muncie 4 speed, ford 9" 3.50 gear, long
tube header/dual Exhaust.

.The Chevrolet Vega is a subcompact automobile produced by the Chevrolet
division of General Motors from 1970 to 1977. Named after the star Vega,
GM's first U.S. mini-car was produced in two-door hatchback, notchback,
wagon, and panel delivery body styles all featuring an inline four-cylinder
engine with a lightweight, aluminum alloy cylinder block.
Initially well-received by buyers and the motoring press, the car sold well
against the AMC Gremlin and Ford Pinto subcompacts and imports including
Toyota, Datsun and Volkswagen. By 1974 it was among the top ten
best-selling American cars.
The Cosworth Vega, a short-lived limited-production performance model with
a reduced-displacement but more powerful all-aluminum inline four-cylinder
engine, was introduced in March 1975.
In early Vegas, engine problems and fender corrosion harmed GM's reputation
for build quality. The faults were remedied by recalls and design
upgrades. A three-year sales decline led to the car's cancellation at the
end of the 1977 model year
The Vega was conceived in 1968 to utilize newly developed all-aluminum
die-cast engine block technology -- the first sand-cast aluminum blocks had
preceded the decision to build the car by two years. A relatively large
displacement engine with good low- speed torque was decided on. gear ratios for low engine rpm
would achieve economy. Engine testing totalled 6,000,000 miles. The
pre-test version was installed in a Fiat 124 sedan for development of the
aluminum block, while several 1968 Opel sedans were used for drive train
Chevrolet instituted a new management program, the car line management
technique, which made it possible to produce the all-new car in two years.
The chief vehicle engineer had overall charge of the program. 50 engineers,
dedicated to the design of the entire car, were divided into groups: body,
power train, chassis design, product assurance, and pleasability. The
latter would check continuously on the vehicles on the assembly line, with
computers in another program monitoring quality control of every vehicle

In October 1968, there was one body style (the "11" style notchback sedan),
one engine, one transmission (MB1 Torque-Drive manually shifted two-speed
automatic), one base trim level, a bench seat, molded rubber floor
covering, no glove box or headliner and no air-conditioning (ventilation
was through the upper dash from the wiper plenum). As the program went into
development, the market changed, as did the product.
December 1968: Hatchback, wagon, and panel delivery styles added; also
floor-level ventilation, and an optional performance engine ("L-11"
two-barrel) which, predicted as 20% of production, accounted for 75%.
Bucket seats were standard. Hatchback and station wagon received carpeting
and headliners. Optional Air conditioning, predicted as 10% of production,
rose to 45%.
February 1969: Opel three- and four-speed transmissions (three-speed
standard, others optional); Powerglide also added (now four transmissions);
mechanical fuel pump replaced by in-tank electric pump; power steering
option; base "11" style Notchback trim upgraded to match Hatchback and
Wagon carpet and headliner.
April 1969: Gauge-pack cluster, HD suspension, wide tires; adjustable seat
back (45% of production); bumpers restyled, lower valance panels added;
swing-out quarter window option (10% of production).
July 1969: Electrically heated backlite option (10% of production); "GT"
package, $325.00 extra (35% of production); bright window-frame and roof
drip moldings added to Hatchback and Wagon.
This is essentially how the car launched as a 1971 model. Production began
on June 26, 1970. After the National GM strike (September to November 1970)
ended, bright roof drip moldings were added to base "11" notchback, with
moldings sent to dealers to update units already in the field.
Cars magazine said in 1974: "Chevrolet paid a price for its rush to
introduce the car with other 1971 models. Tests which should have been at
the proving grounds were performed by customers, necessitating numerous
piecemeal "fixes" by dealers. Chevrolet's "bright star", received an
enduring black eye despite a continuing development program which
eventually alleviated most of these initial shortcomings

This all original 1975 Cosworth is one of 2,061 cars produced for the '75
model year, has only 291 actual miles, and has all of the rare and
difficult to find Cosworth Vega parts right where the factory installed
Assembled at GMs historic Lordstown, Ohio manufacturing facility, and
finished in standard issue 1975 Cosworth Vega code 19 black acrylic
lacquer, CV number 1094 is every bit as clean today as when it left the
showroom floor. The car has remained in all original, non-repaired
condition thanks in small part to GMs anti-rust improvements, and in large
part to immaculate maintenance and care given by loving owners throughout
its life. Today, it features an old school factory appeal that you just
can't find in its restored peers.
With 110 horsepower and a 6,500 RPM
redline, the Cosworth Vega was one of the hottest performing cars available
in 1975 and featured a hand-built mill from GM's Tonawanda engine plant
that was individually signed by its builder on a sticker that occupies the
cam cover. Measuring in at 122 cubic inches, and wearing a correct partial
VIN of 40392, this Vegas DOHC inline-four features sturdy forged aluminum
pistons, a heat-treated forged steel crankshaft and forged connecting rods
that both reveal the engines racing ancestry and assure high performance
durability. To meet ever increasing US emissions standards, a custom
designed stainless steel Exhaust
header and Bendix electronic fuel injection with pulse-time manifold
injection, four injector valves, an electronic control unit (ECU), five
independent sensors and two fuel pumps were installed. Thanks to this
revolutionary engine, the Vega was the first Chevrolet car to feature
electronic fuel injection which warranted an HEI distributor for increased
spark and a heavy duty radiator for increased cooling.
At the bottom of this sophisticated Chevrolet, an original Saginaw 4-speed
manual transmission, which wears a correct 338835 casting number and a
correct 15U240392 partial VIN, sends power to an original 10 bolt rear end
that's packed full of stout 3.73 gears. Holding that sports car drivetrain
off the ground is an original F41 heavy duty suspension which includes a
'torque arm' rear end for optimum rear axle power control, larger rear
stabilizer bars, Vega GT springs and shocks, provisions for the Vega's
"fast Steer" option and front disc brakes. At the center of the car, an
original single pipe Exhaust system
snakes spent gases along the floorpan to a factory replacement muffler
which barks an exotic four cylinder growl through two polished stainless
tips. And at the corners of the car, 13 inch British-made, gold-painted
cast aluminum wheels spin correct BR70-13 Goodyear Custom Steelgard Radials
around chrome lug nuts and satin finished Chevrolet center caps.
Take a look inside this pristine Cosworth Vega and you'll find the typical
all business/no compromises black interior that these cars have built a
reputation for. The custom bucket seats, which are completely fresh and
display no signs of wear at all, nicely complement a 100% straight and
crack-free dash. Inside that dash, an engine-turned gold bezel houses a
Cosworth exclusive 8,000 RPM tachometer between a 120 MPH speedometer,
gauges for the engines vitals and a gold-plated plaque which is branded
with the cars 1094 build sequence number. Below those gauges, a correct
radio delete sits next to the cars original heater/defroster; and in front
of those gauges, a familiar black steering wheel is centered behind a blue
Cosworth Vega horn button emblem. At the floor, the booted shifter for the
Borg Warner T10 transmission springs up from like-new black carpet which is
protected by color-keyed floor mats. And at the roof, the cars original
mouse fur headliner stretches tightly around vinyl sun visors and a bright
courtesy lamp. The door panels, which look as good as new, are decorated
with attractive stainless trim and chrome handles for both the doors and
windows. And the hatch, which is lined with the same black carpet as the
floor boards, appears to have never been used.
