2014 Mazda6 Drive and Review

2014 Mazda6 Walk Around
The first 2014 Mazda6 has arrived on the dealership lot at 401-Dixie Mazda in Mississauga and I'm going to take you for a quick walk around. If you watched my CX-5 Walk Around video, you've seen this face before. It's the new Mazda signature grill and headlight configuration which is part of the new KODO design concept. The new KODO design elements give the car an elegant but aggressive stance. This is the second vehicle to feature the entire suite of SKYACTIV technologies. What we have here today is the top end version, the GT with Tech Package in Soul Red paint and this version comes loaded with Bose Sound, Satellite Radio, Navigation System as well as the latest safety features such as Back-Up Camera along with the new iActivsense systems including Blind Spot Monitoring with Lane Departure Warning plus the Mazda Radar Cruise Control system. I tried it on the highway and it works! I was too chicken to really test the Front Object Warning system and the Smart City Brake Support, however, if the cruise control worked I'm sure these features will work too. This car has the look and feel of a true luxury sports sedan. Well organized with interior finishings I have not seen in a Mazda vehicle before. This leather has more of a rich suede feel. The dash is similar to the CX-5 set up which made it to Ward's Top Ten Interiors List last year. Under the hood, it comes with a 2.5L SKYACTIV engine delivering 184 HP as well as an amazing 5.1L/100Km on the Highway. That works out to over 1,000 Km on a tank of regular gas. This 3rd generation Mazda6 has truly put Mazda into new territory when it comes to delivering on the promise of a luxury sports sedan that still retains and improves on its reputation for outstanding driving dynamics. Mazda's Director of Product Planning, Tim Barnes - 2014 Mazda6 Interior Overview
Mazda's Director of Product Planning, Tim Barnes provides us with the Interior overview of the 2014 Mazda6. Soft touch dash and door materials where they belong plus leather wrapped wheel and shifter, and upscale satin chrome around door handles, instruments, and wheel. Only the smallish 5.8 in display stands out as being a cost cutting move. The high end Bose and base infotainment sound was adequate but not eye opening. A Fender designed sound system would have done the Mazda6 justice. The instrument cluster is easily readable in bright sun and the standard three-spoke racing-inspired smaller rim diameter but thicker wheel itself is leather-wrapped as is the shifter knob on all trims. Tilt-and-telescopic wheel plus steering-wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls are also standard. A cloth textured headliner is standard fair in this class while the cloth textured A-pillar covering is a class above everything in the segment that uses cheap plastic covers instead. Control stalks are tactile and robust and will cause no concerns. Passenger room is ample both front and rear with plenty of headroom for someone up to 6 ft. 4 in or thereabouts. Rear seat legroom was adequate as well. I found the Sport trim cloth seats to be more comfortable than the leather trimmed ones in the Grand Touring. A 60/40-split fold-down feature is standard for the rear and six- or eight-way power-adjustable driver's seats are standard on all but the Sport model, which is equipped with a six-way manual adjustable driver's seat. Noise intrusion was a bit on the high side as there was wind noise around the lower A-pillars at speed and tire road noise apparent while driving on the rougher pavement around Austin. Rear seating was adequate although there was little lower thigh support for taller persons and a duck of your head to get into and out of the rear coupe like roof was mandatory.
