► Mercedes Future Truck 2025 (Autonomous Driving Demo)
The Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 constitutes a revolution in
efficiency, safety and networking, a revolution for road traffic and its
infrastructure, for professional driving and for the road transport sector.
This is not a new truck, but rather the key element in the interconnected
transport system of the future. It is being developed as part of the
"Shaping Future Transportation" initiative by Daimler Trucks to conserve
resources and reduce emissions of all kinds. Other aims are to ensure the
highest possible level of traffic safety and to Boost networking with intelligent data
management considerably for tailor-made vehicle and service solutions.
The prototype demonstrated the exciting capabilities of the
Future Truck 2025 back in the summer at speeds of up to 80 km/h in
realistic traffic situations on a section of the A14 motorway in Magdeburg,
Germany. Now the thrilling exterior and interior of that same vehicle are
One of the most interesting questions on the subject of autonomous driving
is the time horizon envisaged for its realisation. In purely technical
terms, turning it into reality on the roads is already feasible within
around five years. In terms of passenger car development cycles, a possible
start is envisaged in 2020. Owing to the more complex factors for heavy
commercial vehicles, the time horizon for such vehicles will, however, be
rather longer – realistically implementation is possible within ten
years, also in view of the legal considerations that still remain to be
The introduction of autonomous driving will not happen digitally from one
day to the next, as development is progressing in a gradual manner:
evolutionary stages are necessary to revolutionise goods haulage on the
roads. In the coming years, new and improved assistance systems will
continue to pave the clearly set-out way to autonomous driving.

The technology of tomorrow is already a reality at Daimler Trucks, in the

truck was presented on the eve of the 65th International Motor Show for
commercial vehicles in Hanover, Germany. Its perfect synthesis of
technology and design means: The Future Truck 2025 is more than simply a
new truck; it is a key component of the transport system of the future. For
the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 is sparing on resources, reduces
emissions of all types, ensures maximum road traffic safety and increases
the level of networking in road transport. Goods traffic in the future will
be safer, more efficient and more connected as a result. The Future Truck
2025 thus marks a revolution for road traffic and its infrastructure, the
truck driving profession and the haulage industry as a whole.
Work continues to take the Future Truck 2025 towards market maturity -
series production on the horizon
The Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 is far more than a remote vision. The
truck should be on our roads in ten years' time. Many of its technological
elements are already available and ready to use.
"This truck provides compelling answers to the challenges that our
customers will be facing in the future. Our aim therefore is to press
forward with readying this technology for the market and to bring it to
series-production standard," said Dr Wolfgang Bernhard, Daimler Board
Member for Trucks and Buses, at the presentation of the innovative vehicle
in Hanover. "What we are showing here today is how the transport of goods

The Mercedes-Benz M-Class is a luxury mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV),
first offered in 1997 as a 1998 Mercedes model, and built by the German
automaker Mercedes-Benz. Gradually, the Mercedes M-Class became a sales
success in the United States and Mexico. In terms of Mercedes size, it is
slotted in between the smaller Mercedes GLK-Class (based on the Mercedes
C-Class) and the larger Mercedes GL-Class, with which it shares platforms.
For a short time, between the years 1999 to 2002, the M class was also
built by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, for the European market, until it
moved to part of the U.S. market.
The newly redesigned Mercedes M-class (chassis name W166) was introduced in
pre-production form 10 June 2011 as a 2012 model. The first
customer-designated W166 rolled off the Tuscaloosa production line on 20
July. It is moderately refined, taking styling cues from the new
generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class. An increase in rear seat legroom has been
implemented, alongside adjustable rear back-rests. It is due to launch in
September of 2011.
New features in the 2012 Mercedes M-Class include an updated 7G-Tronic
seven-speed automatic transmission to provide improved fuel economy,
optional Adaptive Cruise Control (Distronic Plus), Active Lane Departure
Warning System, and an adjustable-height air suspension (AirMatic).
The redesigned Mercedes M-class (chassis name W164) was introduced in April
2005 as a 2006 model after a showing at the North American International
Auto Show in January. It was almost entirely new, with a more sporting,
aerodynamic look—the coefficient of drag is down to 0.34. Mercedes-Benz
has also made the new Mercedes M-Class larger, measuring 150 mm longer than
the first model. The Mercedes M-Class was named "Best New Sport Utility
Vehicle" in the 2006 Canadian Car of the Year awards.
Mercedes-Benz extensively publicized the US$600 million spent to update its
factory and add manufacturing space for the new Mercedes R-Class. According
to early automotive press reports, the 2006 M-Class vehicles demonstrate
vast improvements in quality.
The Mercedes W164 platform used for the new M-Class is shared with the new
Mercedes GL-Class and is a unibody type rather than the former (W163)
body-on-frame used by the Mercedes M-Class vehicles produced from
1998--2005. The X164 Mercedes GL-CLass, a longer seven-seater version of
the W164 platform, is also available.
New features in the 2006 M-Class include the 7G-Tronic seven-speed
automatic transmission, optional Active Curve-Illuminating Bi-Xenon
headlights which "steer" in the path of the vehicle, and an
adjustable-height air suspension. The manual transmission has been dropped.
In most countries except US an Off-Road Pro package with locking on rear
and center differential, low-range transmission and adjustable chassis
clearance is available as an option.
