2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI Test Drive & Car Video Review

Volkswagen is the only non-luxury German car sold in America and now Volkswagen has opened a manufacturing plant in Chattanooga Tennessee where the Passat is being made. So you can rest better knowing your new Passat was made in the U.S.A. The 2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI starts at $22,995 with the Premium Edition TDI going for $32,195. The engine which is the most important part of the Passat TDI is a turbocharged and direct injected diesel four cylinder that displaces 2.0 liters. Power output is 140 horsepower and an incredible 236 lb-ft. of torque. You can choose between a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed DSG automatic transmission with Tiptronic and Sport mode. The manual transmission model gets an estimated 31 MPG in the city and 43 MPG on the highway, while the DSG version gets 30 MPG in the city and 40 MPG on the highway. On the inside, the Passat TDI benefits from one of the most spacious interiors in the mid-size sedan segment. In fact the rear passengers are treated to three feet of legroom which make the Passat best in class. German car manufacturers are known for producing high end luxury vehicles. Volkswagen also owns Audi and Bentley among others so know that some of the technologies and luxury features found on those automobiles have made their way down to the Volkswagen line. When you step up to the higher trim levels you are rewarded with better materials and trim pieces. Heated seats and a great Fender 400 watt stereo system are available as options. Technology wise the 2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI has a bunch of great interior features as well as advanced safety systems. Bluetooth technology allows the drive to make phone calls hands-free. There are controls on the steering wheel that control the stereo as well as the Bluetooth. Finally rounding out the interior technology is an advanced touch screen navigation system that is available as an option. The Volkswagen Passat was named to the IIHS List of Top Safety Picks for 2012. Beside a sophisticated airbag system, the Passat has a crash-optimized front end which helps to absorb the forces involved in an accident. Electronic Stability Control works to keep the car on the road and the driver in control. The 2012 Volkswagen Passat is one of the many vehicles in the mid-size sedan segment. And the GTI has one of the best all-around 4-cylinder engines in the world. In fact this engine powers numerous Volkswagen and Audi vehicles. But the 2012 Volkswagen GTI is not just a car with a wonderful engine; the GTI is also a good looking car that is well balanced, and quite comfortable. In fact you can get the Volkswagen GTI in both a 2-door and 4-door hatchback body style. The base price is $23,995 with the top of the line Autobahn model costing $31,695. The 2012 Volkswagen GTI is powered by a direct injection turbocharged 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft. of torque. While this may not seem like a ton of power, it is more than enough for the everyday driver. Power is transmitted through a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels. The automatic transmission is called the DSG which stands for Direct-Shift Gearbox. This double clutch electronically controlled transmission can execute a shift in mere milliseconds. This helps performance figures such as 0-60 MPH as well as adding to the fuel economy of the GTI. The manual transmission model gets 21 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway while the DSG automatic transmission model gets 24 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway. On the inside of the 2012 Volkswagen GTI you have 2 choices when it comes to seating material. There are the cloth seats that are very unique and serve as a tribute to the first GTI from the 1970's. On the other hand you can get your GTI with top sports seats that are finished in leather and provide a comfortable yet firm feel. The rest of the interior of the 2012 Volkswagen GTI is accented here and there with awesome red stitching on the shift boot and steering wheel. Speaking of the steering wheel; this flat bottom unit has integrated controls for the stereo. The pedals are also very sporty and race inspired. The GTI also features a ton of technology built in. On the outside the daytime LED running lights are a standard safety feature that not only looks great but also makes you more visible to oncoming traffic. Bluetooth comes standard on the GTI and you can upgrade to a touch-screen navigation unit. On the safety front the GTI sports 6 airbags, Electronic Stability Control, and an Intelligent Crash Response System. But the Jetta has a few tricks up its sleeve to set is apart from the rest of the pack. First, Volkswagen is the only non-luxury German automobile manufacturer. This means you can expect a high level of quality and luxury in each vehicle Volkswagen produces. Second, the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta has a very low base price at $15,515 making is one of the least expensive vehicles in the compact sedan segment. Finally, the Volkswagen Jetta is produced right here in the Good Old U.S.A. at a plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This is great for those looking to buy automobiles that support jobs in America. There are more than 50 different trim levels on the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta. These include variations on engines, feature packages, and body style (sedan or wagon). The very base model starts at $15,515 with the SEL seen here starting at $23,445. The top of the line model is the TDI Wagon with sunroof and navigation going for $29,220. The engine choices are plentiful with 4 different engines being offered on the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta. The first engine is the most basic. This 2.0 liter 4-cylinder has 115 horsepower and 125 lb-ft. or torque while getting 24 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on the highway. The next engine up is the 2.5 liter 5-cylinder making 170 horsepower and 177 lb-ft. of torque while getting 23 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway. The next step up is the turbocharged 2.0 liter 4-cylinder found on many Volkswagen vehicles. This little engine is found on the GLI trim and puts out 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft. of torque while averaging 22 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway. The last engine is the venerable TDI which is a turbocharged and direct injected diesel engine. This 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine makes 140 horsepower and a huge 236 lb-ft. of torque while returning 30 MPG in the city and 42 MPG on the highway. All of these fuel economy figures are with the 6-speed manual transmission installed. With the Automatic transmission the figures drop just a bit. The 2012 Volkswagen Jetta has a ton of usable interior space. In fact the Jetta seems more like a mid-size than a compact sedan. There is over 3 feet of rear legroom which according to VW is more than most large sedans. And with the Wagon model you can get 67 cubic feet of cargo space. There is an optional seating surface called V-Tex leatherette which looks and feel like leather but cost much less. The Jetta SEL comes standard with heated front seats as well. Since the SEL is one of the more expensive trims it does come loaded with lots of great technology. There sound system is a 400 watt Fender Stereo with a subwoofer and 8 speakers. A touch screen navigation system is also standard on the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta SEL. The Jetta is available in many different trims and configurations so that there will be a model to suit you. The 2012 Volkswagen Jetta is a great deal as it is one of the most fuel efficient compact sedans on the market. This automobile is perfect for those looking for a little more luxury and sophistication over the Jetta and Passat. In fact you can consider the 2013 Volkswagen CC the poor man's Mercedes CLS or Audi A7. The CC fills the gap between the mid-sized coupe segment and the mid-sized luxury coupe segment. In fact the CC stands for Comfort Coupe even though this car has 4 doors. Also the 2013 Volkswagen CC is one good looking car and really stands out from the crowd especially with those LED daytime running lights. Base price on the VW CC is $30,250 with the Executive AWD model going for $41,420. The 2013 Volkswagen CC is powered by 2 different engine choices. The first is Volkswagen's famous and most popular' a direct injected and turbocharged 2.0 liter 4-cylinder making 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft. of torque. This engine gets 22 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway with the 6-speed automatic transmission. The second engine choice is dubbed the VR6 and provides more power. The 3.6 liter V-6 engine puts out 280 horsepower and 265 lb-ft. of torque. The VR6 engine gets 19 MPG in the city and 27 MPG on the highway. On the outside the Volkswagen CC had not received any notable updates for the 2013 model year. But this vehicle got a nice refresh for the2012 model year. The CC benefits from coupe styling while having 4 doors. This gives the CC its name: comfort coupe. On the inside the 2013 Volkswagen CC is all luxury. The surfaces are covered in nice leather, the steering wheel has built-in stereo and Bluetooth controls, and the touch-screen Navigation features and integrated back-up camera. 2012 Volkswagen Passat SE 2.5L Start Up, Quick Tour, & Rev With Exhaust View - 700 Miles
2012 Volkswagen Passat SE This Passat has the entry 2.5L DOHC 5 CYL which is good for 170 HP It's paired to a 6 speed auto. Roomy, comfortable, & clean looking car. Wasn't huge fan of its looks when seeing pictures of it online a yr ago. After seeing them in person, the new minimalist look has grown very much on me. Not a fan of the 5 Cyl engine as it's underpowered for its size considering a normally aspirated 4 cyl nowadays with similar displacement can deliver 200 HP nowadays. It also sounds a bit unrefinedy on the upper rev range but really this has proven to be a reliable engine tho. THe VR6 & TDI models are the more enticing options. For under $20K, Passat is a lot of car for the buck considering its a full size car the decent interior quality / Fit & Finish. Costs just a bit more that the Jetta which delivers opposite impressions.
