Compression Testing and What You Can Learn From It - EricTheCarGuy Here is a video on performing a compression test on an engine to assess it's mechanical condition. An engines ability to compress air and fuel is directly proportional to it's performance since an engine is nothing more than an air compressor once you take away all the controls. A compression test is a good general test that will give you an idea of the engine's overall health but it does not give specific information on what the problem is should there be one, for that a "leak down test" would be required, here is a link to that video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgrfT0LFMhc However if you find yourself looking for the source of a performance problem with an engine, this is a great place to start. This test is often overlooked in favor of looking at the fuel or ignition system, I think that's a mistake, if an engine can't perform mechanically no amount of electronics will make that better. http://www.ericthecarguy.com/ This video has been a long timing coming and is one of the most requested things I get is about batteries going dead overnight so I'm very happy to finally bring you this video about the process of finding a parasitic draw which is a small drain on a battery above 50ma when the vehicle is shut off. Once you find the right fuse(s) the next step is to trace the components involved in that circuit till you find the source of the draw, you first start with a wiring diagram to give you an idea of where to start looking and then start unplugging things in that circuit to isolate the cause, it's quite scientific really a simple process of elimination. How to diagnose carburetor vacuum leaks on your motorcycle
This is a simple video demonstrating the best method to detect vacuum leaks around your carb boots. Vacuum leaks are a fairly common problem in older bikes, and luckily they can usually be remedied quickly and easily, the first step however is diagnosis. If your bike is running rough, won't rev up or has an irregular idle, before you take off the carbs and open them up, check for vacuum leaks. A vacuum leak occurs when too much air is introduced into the combustion chamber via a failure in one or more of the carburetor boots or other rubber mating surface. When too much air is sucked in, then the bike cannot combust the gasoline efficiently; there must be an optimal ratio. Therefore it is up to you to detect these leaks, and either plug them up or replace the carb boots. In this particular bike, the engine was running VERY lean. Not only did we have vacuum leaks, but the baffles were taken out of the engine, and the previous owner had removed the air filter and neglected to install a new one. This is not only dangerous by allowing foreign material to enter the engine, but it also makes the engine run much hotter, as lean explosions create more heat than regular ones (think about blowing on a fire in your fire place: more air, hotter fire). This can be detrimental to a variety of parts in the engine, and it is a good thing we didn't ride this bike around too much before finding the problem.
