7-Series Improved: BMW 750i Full Test by InsideLine.com
MORE BMW 750i @ INSIDELINE.COM:
Just like a kid writing a 10th-grade term paper, the 2009 BMW 750i is just
begging to mention the guy who said, "The successful revolutionary is a
statesman, the unsuccessful one a criminal." In other words, one man's
Thomas Jefferson is another's Guy Fawkes.
After being flamed with criticisms of its Bangle-butt styling and infernal
iDrive controller, the last-generation BMW 7 Series seemed to be a shoo-in
for criminal indictment. When this model was introduced back in 2002, car
enthusiasts gathered with pitchforks in hand, carrying effigies of BMW
chief designer Chris Bangle and yammering about an honored automotive brand
being besmirched by styling blasphemy and misguided technological wizardry.
And yet the E65 has sold better than any of the three previous generations
of the 7 Series, while both its controversial rear-end styling and iDrive
control interface sprouted in copycat form all over the automotive
landscape. Whatever you might say, the 2002-'08 BMW 7 Series has been
undeniably successful — a revolutionary, not a criminal.
But like Thomas Jefferson, revolutionaries must move on and mellow through
time. The all-new 2009 BMW 750i does just that, presenting a more
enlightened approach to the full-size luxury flagship. The 2009 7 Series is
quite simply one of the finest automobiles made today — no pitchforks
2009 BMW 7 Series New Era Official Video
BMW's official premiere video for the 2009 7 Series, titled "New Era".
I love this video because it's so unnecessarily dramatic...the first half
looks like it's from some sort of post-apocalyptic movie. The New 7 is
beautiful, but a new era? I'm not so sure.
bmw new 730 2010 750 760
The 2010 BMW 7-Series lineup gains available all-wheel drive, a new top-end
model, and a gas/electric hybrid version following its redesign for the
2009 model year. Conventional 7-Series models include the 750i and 750Li,
each with rear-wheel drive. New for 2010 are the AWD 750i xDrive and 750Li
xDrive. A new top-end rear-drive 760Li is due later in model-year 2010. The
"L" versions of BMW's flagship sedan ride on a wheelbase that is 5.5-inches
longer than that of the 750i. All 750i cars are powered by a 400-hp
4.4-liter twin turbocharged V8. A
6-speed automatic transmission is standard. The ActiveHybrid 7 pairs a
4.4-liter V8 engine with an electric motor for 455 hp total. The hybrid
system can shut off the gas engine at a stop, but the car is unable to
accelerate solely on battery power. No plug-in charging is required. The
hybrid uses an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 760Li has a turbocharged 544-hp 6.0-liter V12 engine and an
8-speed automatic transmission. Available safety features include ABS,
traction control, antiskid system, front and rear side airbags, knee
airbags, and curtain side airbags. BMW's Active Roll Stabilization,
designed to counter body lean, should remain part of the optional Sport
Package, along with BMW's new Integral Active Steering, which adds
speed-sensitive rear-wheel steering to BMW's Active Steering system. Also
standard should be BMW's Dynamic Driving Control, which allows the driver
to adjust the suspension, throttle response, transmission's shift
characteristics, and power steering. A navigation system and wireless
cell-phone link should remain standard along with the new version of BMW's
iDrive control for audio, navigation, and climate settings. All models
continue to include steering-linked headlights, front- and rear-obstacle
detection, and BMW Assist emergency and concierge service. Other features
that should return on the 2010 7-Series include blind-spot alert,
lane-departure warning, a head-up display, sideview and rearview cameras,
and high beams that automatically dim when oncoming traffic is detected.
Also offered should be a 40-gigabyte hard drive for the audio and
navigation systems, which allows for storage of up to 13 gigabytes of music
files. A night-vision system, adaptive cruise control, DVD entertainment,
and keyless access and engine start should return. This report is based on
evaluations of the 2009 BMW 7-Series.
BMW & Benz Rev Up @ the Track - BMW 750Li and Mercedes S550
BMW VS. MERCEDES TRACK SMACK @ INSIDELINE.COM:
These are the big guns from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Well, not the biggest
guns, but with prices near or above the $100,000 range, they're big enough.
The BMW 750Li is all-new for 2009 and looking better than ever. Its 400-horsepower twin-turbo V8 makes it the closest thing to a
"Motorsport" 7 Series we have ever seen. The Mercedes-Benz S550 is getting
a face-lift next year, but the current model has held up well. And with a
of its own, it doesn't give up much to the new BMW.
One look at the track numbers and you'll be amazed what these 2.25-ton
sedans can do. From 13-second quarter-mile sprints to 110-foot stops from
60 mph, these two sedans are perfect examples of what can be accomplished
when money is no object. Full details after the jump.

before finally getting chauffered in the back seat of the cars to examine

Audi A8 vs BMW 750 twin turbo Drag Race
Audi A8 L (375bhp & 325 lb/ft) vs BMW 750li (400bhp & 450 lb/ft).
Audi uses the new ZF 8-speed automatic, BMW uses their standard 6-speed
