Some bad driving and bad etiquette from a Lime Rock track day (20131116 lrp scda irritation)
I had a great day today with SCDA at Lime Rock in my 2010 Porsche 911 GT3. Unfortunately, however, the first session of the day included some really bad driving and also some bad etiquette. Not what I've come to expect from the Advanced run group. It may be hard to tell from the video, but the passing rules during these track days are extremely strict. You're not allowed to pass another car unless the driver of the car you're overtaking has seen you and has literally pointed with his/her hand out the window to tell you they've seen you and on which side they would like you to pass. Not pointing someone by who is obviously faster than you (e.g. is behind you now, but wasn't there before) is considered very bad etiquette, and will get you thrown off the track. Equally bad is overtaking without a point-by. In both cases, because this isn't a race but rather just a practice/educational event, this is done for safety reasons, since passing without point-by as is done in racing (see my Mazdaspeed Challenge videos) exponentially increases the likelihood of collisions. I actually got one of these on video during one of those races where two cars hit while being side-by-side at Lime Rock in turn 1 -- the same place the Porsche passes me in this video. It's fine and fun to run this way when everyone is playing by the same rules, but infuriating when you're observing the rules and others are not. 2:07 - Yellow Lotus doesn't give point-by to a faster black GT3, so the GT3 passes anyway without permission. The Lotus driver also doesn't point me by, so I wait for a bit. 3:05 - Blue R32 gives me polite point-by and moves offline in the downhill. This is a very polite move, thanks to this good driver! 3:28 - I catch a black Corvette, and he catches black Mercedes C63 AMG who isn't pointing anyone by. We're now both stuck behind the Mercedes. 4:16 - This would be the obvious place for the Mercedes to point us by. But there's no point-by. 4:20 - Instead, the Corvette passes the Mercedes without a point-by. The Mercedes brakes abruptly before the 6 board and I'm afraid I'm going to rear-end him, so I move over to the right, being careful not to pass or present myself at his side without a point-by (which I still haven't gotten). 4:38 - The Mercedes takes an erratic line through Turn 2 and brakes in the middle of the corner. I again take evasive maneuvers to avoid rear-ending him. I'm now beginning to wonder what is the matter with this person. Either he doesn't see me or he thinks he is faster than I am. 5:13 - By this point, I'm keeping some distance going into the corners to avoid an accident, because this person is driving so unpredictably (braking very hard for fast turns, etc). I go into west bend very slowly. 5:19 - I start to flash my lights to see if I can get his attention. Again, I need to be very careful not to rear-end the Mercedes coming out of the downhill. He continues obliviously along the main straight as I flash my brights very excitedly. 5:40 - A guy in a Radical has had enough and decides to pass us both without permission from either of us. As I go into turn 1, I get pushed to the outside, driver's left, by a black and orange Porsche which has dived in and passed me without a point-by. The Mercedes continues on his crazy line and both cars pass him without a point-by as well. Blue flags are out, but the guy in the Mercedes continues obliviously on his way. 6:08 - I try honking my horn to see if that will help. As I come down the hill, I decide to pull into the pits because I have had enough. 6:37 - Inexplicably, our hero also decides to pull into the pits. I signal to the cars behind me that I'm going to stay on the track, and two more cars pass me without a point-by from me (although perhaps reasonably so, since I had appeared to be heading towards the pits). Now that the track has been cleared of this particular menace, I now have to go work my way through traffic again, which you can see in the video titled "2010 Porsche GT3 at Lime Rock Park with SCDA 1/1 (20131116 lrp scda 1b)."
