It happens deep in the Nevada desert, just past Austin. On a long, straight
section of road with nothing to lose, our friends in the white 1970 Dodge
Challenger R/T finally put the hammer down. At once, the rawness and purity
of Kowalski's ride pulverizes the well-insulated interior of our 2008 Dodge
Challenger SRT8, shredding the peace inside the modern car's cockpit with
the same brute force Kowalski used to pierce a hole in the cool desert air
38 years ago. Even with my right foot buried, I see nothing but taillights
until they disappear into the desert.
In these few brief seconds, the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 is clearly
defined by its soft edges and quiet Exhaust. Manufacturers don't let us feel cars
raw and unfiltered anymore. Hammering down a desert road with a thin-rimmed
steering wheel and pistol-grip shifter — that's raw. Four hundred and
forty cubic inches and a four-speed — that's raw. Powerslides unhampered
by electronic intervention — that's raw.
In 1970, when Kowalski drove this very road — U.S. Highway 50 through
Nevada — he felt it. And it was raw.

A long wheelbase, v8 or v12 power, front engine/rear drive configuration,
and a sport-tuned suspension with four comfy seats inside. That ladies and
gentlemen is the recipe for any good grand touring car. Modern automobiles
like the Mercedes-Benz CL63, BMW M6 and the Bentley Continental GT are
perfect examples of this. How about a 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu though
- what about that? When released in 1966, this 2nd generation Chevelle was
nothing more than a mid-priced, nicely appointed people mover with some
decent styling. However now, some 47 years later, owner Enzo Morales has
transformed this particular car into a jaw-dropping, hardcore styled road
burner that is just as happy running the super-slab at triple digits as it
is carving up your favorite back road.

My 1971 Chevelle SS 454 4 Speed
This is a true story about my 1971 Chevelle SS (a REAL SS 454 4 speed),
which I bought in 1984 and sadly sold in 1988 ("my sacrifice") to help
raise cash for a piece of property I was buying. I saved its car cover,SS
key chain, and all the paperwork I had on it because I had hopes of buying
it back in 2 or 3 years when I recovered a little bit from the land
purchase and building my house & garage. It was in an accident 1 year after
I sold it and I thought it was totalled and junked. It ended up sitting,
disassembled, in a barn for many years until it was purchased in 2000 and
restored. I happened upon it when it was sitting outside at the body shop
and was amazed to find that it was still "alive". The new owner decided to
sell it a few years later and so, after 18 years, I bought the car for the
second time in 2006. I still can't believe we're back together again! So
here are photos of the car in 1984, and in 2008, sitting in front of the
garage that is built on the property that I bought back in 1988. It has a
454 bored out to 468 with dart aluminum heads & 12:1 compression. I have
to run it on a 50/50 mix of 112 octane race fuel and super. Quite a bit
than the stock LS5 had! It breathes out through 3" Exhaust and flowmasters.
