Transmission Problems (Mountaineer/Explorer)
I own a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer and I have been experiencing some tranny
problems with it. My transmission refuses to shift past 45 mph causing a
lot of problems for me. According to many auto review websites this car and
the Ford Explorer counterpart are not strangers to this sort of problem.

Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles
of similar weight.
The Ford Explorer 4-door (except the Sport Trac model) and the Mercury
Mountaineer were redesigned for the 2002 model year. Explorers and
Mountaineers manufactured after October 2001 include structural changes to
improve occupant protection in frontal offset crashes (note: information
about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification
label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door).
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the
crashworthiness of a 2002 Explorer with the structural changes in a 40 mph
frontal offset crash test into a deformable barrier.
The Explorer and Mountaineer have been re-engineered for the 2006 model
year, and the Aviator has been dropped.
Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled. During
rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof rail, window frame, and B-pillar.
Injury measures — Measures taken from the head, neck, and chest indicate
low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity.
Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be
possible. Head accelerations from the roof rail, window frame, and B-pillar
hits were negligible.
Differential Problems (Mountaineer/Explorer)
My truck has been making this constant ticking sound from one of the rear
tires. I took it into a mechanic and found out the rear differential was
making all that noise. It turns out a few teeth have broken off the gears
and metal shavings were coming off as a result of both poor lubrication and
harsh winters. In addition that I had to replace many other parts on the
truck as they were rusted out. My rear axle was rusted out and on the verge
of collapse and my CV boot and driveshaft had to be replaced.
Total repair cost: $1100.00 (with used/refurbished parts)
I brought this vehicle up from Georgia where snow and salt are practically
nonexistent to a place battered by harsh winters and road salt. Vehicle was
spotless when brought up but it was eaten up in the course of three years.
Always rustproof your car, do this for the longevity of the parts in your
vehicle or else you will face costly repairs in the future.
My girl's '01 Ford Explorer. I had to put new tires on it anyway

Supercharged Explorer Dyno
Hi, This is a quick Vid of my explorer on the Dyno, Unfortunately it kept
shifting early at 4500 rpm even with the overdrive off, Will post another
vid as soon as I get the sct software to hold the gear & tune it to shift
at 5500. So far at 4400 rpm its making 280 rwhp & 341 RWTQ. Here's a chart
comparing old set up with 4-4.5 psi (Blue Line) to new setup 7-8 psi (Red
line) . Notice at 3400 rpm with the new pulley its making 50 RWHP more all
the way till it finished at 4400
