PINKS ALL OUT FINALS 7-11-09 131 Dragway Martin, MI
PINKS! ALL OUT! was held at 131 Dragway in Martin, Mi Saturday July 11, 2009
From Steve Kaminski, the Grand Rapids Press...
Bill Bennett lost to John Bodenstadt of Atwood, Ohio, and his 1996 Ford Mustang in a best-of-three series of match races.
"Pinks All Out" officials said 464 drivers from as far as Colorado, Florida and New York registered for Saturday's races.
About 430 of them competed. The show's staff studied the times from the two qualifying sessions and found the group of 32 drivers closest in elapsed time.
The most competitive bracket was the 10.3- to 10.5-second range. Show host Rich Christensen called all drivers to the top of the dragstrip and announced the car numbers of the drivers who made the cut.
The drivers then squared of in single-elimination passes. The 16 winning drivers advanced and reported to staging lanes, where in-car cameras were installed and drivers were equipped with microphones.
Wayland's Roger Jackey, Middleville's Tony Whitehead and Scott Dronkers, Allegan's Allen Bruischart and Portage's Louie Hall made the All Out 16. Bruischart and Hall were eliminated in the round of 16, and Dronkers defeated Whitehead in All Out 8.
"I almost crapped my pants," Dronkers said of learning he had been selected for the top 32. "It's great. It's unbelievable. I watch the show all the time, so this is a dream come true."
"I race a couple of times a month, and I have been doing it for 20-some years, but this has been my best moment so far. This is going to be on TV. How do you beat that?"
Jackey was beaten in the All Out 8 by Sturgis' Doug Hopkins, but he still had a good time.
"I have been drag racing on and off for 20 years. I just do it for fun," Jackey said. "I try to watch the show as much as I can, and I thought if they ever came to Martin, I would try to get in.
The show will air 8 p.m. Sept. 24 on Speed TV.
