Reflecting a further industry-wide adoption of smaller vehicle designs in the interest of improved fuel efficiency and emissions compliance, the Thunderbird was redesigned for 1980 on the compact Ford Fox platform, which first appeared only two years prior as the basis for the Ford Fairmont. Compared to the previous Torino-based Thunderbird and its large 114 inches (2,896 mm) wheelbase and 215.5 inches (5,474 mm) overall length, the new Thunderbird lost 5.6 inches (142 mm) of wheelbase and 14.6 inches (371 mm) in overall length. The squarish styling seen in the previous generation Thunderbird was favored for the new model, but the small car platform resulted in a poor translation with a distinctly upright appearance. Frameless door glass was no longer used; a chrome metal frame was used, making this car more like a two-door sedan. Combined with the poor performing 4.2 L (255 cu in) Windsor V8 as a base engine, this Thunderbird generation was not well received by the public. The available 4.9 L (302 cu in) Windsor V8 was a welcome alternative to the 255, but with only 131 horsepower (98 kW) performance was only modestly enhanced. Significantly, though failing to generate any new interest for the Thunderbird, a six-cylinder engine was made available for the first time in the Thunderbird's history in 1981, the 200 cu in (3.3 L) Thriftpower Six. For 1982 this was followed up with the replacement of the straight-six with a V6, the 3.8 L Essex, which was also now the Thunderbird's standard engine. Hurting the Thunderbird's sales performance further, the 302 V8 did not return for 1982, leaving the 255 as the only alternative engine. At 288,638 examples produced between 1980 and 1982, the eighth generation Thunderbird was barely more successful than the final model year of the previous Thunderbird generation. In order to revive the Thunderbird's success, a redesign was needed and Ford would deliver one for 1983.

1985 Mazda Savanna Rx-7 Rotary 1 Owner 37K Orig Mi Rx7 Series 3 GSL SE NA S3

The Series 3 (1984--1985) featured an updated lower front fascia. North
American models received a different instrument cluster (the NA S3 RX-7 is
the only rotary-engined car to not have a centrally mounted tachometer).
GSL package was continued into this series, but Mazda introduced the GSL-SE
sub-model. The GSL-SE had a fuel-injected 1.3 L 13B RE-EGI engine producing
135 hp (101 kW) and 135 lb·ft (183 N·m). GSL-SEs had much the same
options as the GSL (clutch-type rear LSD and rear disc brakes), but the
brake rotors were larger, allowing Mazda to use the more common lug nuts
(versus bolts), and a new bolt pattern of 4x114.3 (4x4.5"). Also, they had
upgraded suspension with stiffer springs and shocks. The external oil
cooler was reintroduced, after being dropped in the 1983 model-year for the
controversial "beehive" water-oil heat exchanger.
The 1984 RX-7 GSL has an estimated 29 highway miles per gallon (8.11 litres
per 100 km) /19 estimated city miles per gallon (12.37 l/100 km). According
to Mazda, its rotary engine, licensed by NSU-Wankel allowed the RX-7 GSL to
accelerate from 0 to 50 (80 km/h) in 6.3 seconds. Kelley Blue Book, in its
January--February 1984 issue, noted that a 1981 RX-7 GSL retained 93.4% of
its original sticker price.
1985 - Mazda released in Australia the RX7 Finale - this was the last of
the series and brought out in limited numbers. The Finale featured power
options and a brass plaque mentioning the number the car was as well as
"Last of a legend" on the plaque. The finale had special stickers and a
blacked out section between the window & rear hatch.
The handling and acceleration of the car were noted to be of a high caliber
for its day. This generation RX-7 had "live axle" 4-link rear suspension
with Watt's linkage, a 50/50 weight ratio, and weighed under 2500 lb (1100
kg). It was the lightest generation of RX-7 ever produced. 12A-powered
models accelerated from 0--60 mph in 9.2 s, and turned 0.779g (7.64 m/s²)
laterally on a skidpad. The 12A engine produced 100 hp (75 kW) at 6000 rpm,
allowing the car to reach speeds of over 120 miles per hour (190 km/h).
Because of the smoothness inherent in the Wankel rotary engine, little
vibration or harshness was experienced at high rpm, so a buzzer was fitted
to the tachometer to warn the driver when the 7000 rpm redline was
The 12A engine has a long thin shaped combustion chamber, having a large
surface area in relation to its volume. Therefore, combustion is cool,
giving few oxides of nitrogen. However, the combustion is also incomplete,
so there are large amounts of partly burned hydrocarbons and carbon
monoxide. The Exhaust is hot enough
for combustion of these to continue into the Exhaust. An engine driven pump supplies air into
the Exhaust to complete the burn of
these chemicals. This is done in the "thermal reactor" chamber where the Exhaust manifold would normally be on a
conventional engine. Under certain conditions the pump injects air into the
thermal reactor and at other times air is pumped through injectors into the
Exhaust ports. This fresh air is
needed for more efficient and cleaner burning of the air/fuel mixture.
Options and models varied from country to country. The gauge layout and
interior styling in the Series 3 was only changed for North American
versions. Additionally, North America was the only market to have offered
the first generation RX-7 with the fuel-injected 13B, model GSL-SE. A turbocharged (but non-intercooled) 12A
engine was available for the top-end model of Series 3 in Japan.
Sales were strong, with a total of 474,565 first generation cars produced;
377,878 were sold in the United States alone. In 2004, Sports Car
International named this car #7 on its list of Top Sports Cars of the
1970s. In 1983, the RX-7 would appear on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best
list for the first time in 20 years

The forgotten Thunderbirds 1977-1978
A video tribute to the nearly forgotten 77-78 Ford Thunderbird. Every
carshow has a 55-57 T-bird sitting around, and the big square birds, but
the poor 77-78 Thunderbird was the hottest selling car for Ford Motor
Company in the late 70's. Sit back and take a trip down to the birds nest
to rediscover a rare bird.

Finally starting up my 1977 T-Bird again after a whole year!
Hey everyone, I finally got a chance to start up my T-Bird and give it a
spin. It has been way too long. Last time I started it was Sept. last
year (2010). Starts up again without really any problems, small fuel leak,
40 second fix. lol.
Here is the history of my t-bird:
My dad bought it for his first car and he stopped driving it in 1989
because of some carb problems. My dad saved the car for me and in 2004 I
had the chance to get it running again. To my surprise, after not running
for 15 years, I poured gas down the carb and it fired right over!!!!! After
I bypassed the gas lines (old gas in them) I had it running like new. Haha,
first time I put it in gear it squealed the tires and jumped forward a
couple feet!!! I make sure I have the break to the floor before I put it in
gear now! Later in 2004 I brought the car in to a mechanic to have the
tranny flushed, but because of my lack of car knowledge I found out the
hard way that you don't do that to a old car. It now has tranny problems,
sometimes it wont stay in gear. Which really sucks because the tranny was
working beyond perfect before. It still has the minor carb problems
mentioned above too. And so I parked it in the storage shed in the video
and it is waiting for me to have the money and time to continue rebuilding

My Car Collection 1979 Lincoln Continental Collector's Series
This Lincoln Continental is one of the less driven cars in my car
collection it has no 12k miles Originals it has never been restored or
something like that, it works absoulutely everything ,power windows, powered
locks, it has a working MAGAZINE, its really in a mint condition as you can
see it, it runs a V8 Ford 400ci (6.6lt) . The 1979 Collector's Series Mark
V was equipped essentially the same as the Diamond Jubilee Edition of 1978;
virtually every Lincoln luxury was provided as standard equipment on these
cars. Offered in just two colors initially, Midnight Blue Moondust Metallic
and White, two additional colors, Light Silver Moondust Metallic and
Crystal Blue Moondust Metallic, were offered later in the year. The
"Collector's Series" option almost doubled the retail price of the standard
Continental Mark V to almost $22,000 US dollars, The Mark V version truly
was limited with production of just 5,159 cars. Enjoy
