1984 DODGE SHELBY CHARGER -- ANOTHER RARE SHELBY CREATION
For 1983, Carroll Shelby modified the Dodge Charger, to be sold at Dodge dealers as the Dodge Shelby Charger. Rather than focusing on speed, Shelby modified the suspension and styling. The engine compression was raised for 107 hp, and the manual transmission had revised ratios. Shorter springs, special wheels, and tires complemented stronger brakes and quicker steering. Outside, a new nose and racing stripes accented the performance image. The body kits, among other parts, were often shipped to dealerships along with the car to be put on after delivery. The reasoning behind this varied, but was said to speed delivery and compensate for ground clearance issues that the cars faced on many car carriers. Production was 8,251 for that first year. For 1984, the Shelby Charger could be ordered with an optional automatic transmission. There were 7,552 Shelby Chargers sold this model year. The high-output engine, now up to 110 hp was also available in baseline Chargers and Turismos. The MPFI/turbocharged turbo I engine, commonly known as a 'T1' was added for Dodge's 1985 Shelby Charger. This engine produced 146 hp and was changed from its first appearance in the Dodge Daytona turbo during the previous year. A Garrett AiResearch T3 turbocharger and Chrysler/Bosch multiple-point fuel injection enabled the 2.2 L engine to produce the additional horsepower. A total of 7,709 Shelby Chargers were made for the 1985 model year, and 7,669 in 1986. 1987 was the final year, with just 1,011 produced. How many of these Shelby creations exist today? Most likely just several hundred of all the years these were made. Always a pleasure to see a rare car especially in this condition. In my opinion, the quality of the paint job was poor to begin with - topcoat black under the door beneath the interior panels were sprayed very thin from Shelby and you can see the primer through it. The prior owner had touched up the passenger door and you can see a paint line if you look for it. Here we can see the paint peeling away on the hood (and this is the only place this is occurring) showing the base primer underneath. This is a common problem for not only for Dodge, but several other auto makers of this era. It started to peel in 1999 and since then, I've been extra cautious about protecting the rest of the paint. I suppose a paint job just on the hood would suffice. There are a few door dings from careless and inconsiderate idiots. Aside from the hood, I would say the paint is about 80%. The decals are about 85%, showing a custom "shadow paint" in purple that was done by the previous owner. It really looks great. The SHELBY decal on the front window has some cracks - I would rate it at 85%. Many genuine Mopar new old stock decals will be included with the sale. All of the marker lights and reflectors have been "blacked out" using a transparent black paint that still allows light to penetrate. Similarly, the aftermarket Philips headlights have a black honeycomb insert. During the day, the headlights look black. At night, the lights shine bright. I bought a spare rear center brake light lens and installed the Blue Dots (the original brake lens is blacked out as well and is also included). At night, the blue prism lenses blend with the red light surrounding the Blue Dots to yield a purple color. Very fitting considering the purple theme from the decals. I also installed a locking gas cap but have the original which is included. The rims are 90%. All of the original machining looks very crisp, and there are no dings or curb damage. The finish is better than good, only a few areas showing the original clear coat beginning to spider crack. All wheel weights are on the inside of the rim. McGard wheel lock nuts and key are included. There are lots of life left on these Firestone tires - I would guess at least 3 to 5 years left easily. No dry rot or cracks. Size is P205-50R15. Side mirrors and back bumper cover are originally finished in a flat matte black. They are beginning to show a very slight amount of sun fade, but a little bit of waxing definitely hides this.
