5.0 Camaro G92 vs 5.0 Mustang GT ('90s Street Race)
Most car guys don't know much about the top performing 5.0 liter 5-speed cars from 1990-92 with the G92 performance package that were packing the 230hp version 5.0 coupled with the 5-speed and 3.42 gears... these cars were a different breed and cut above the "run of the mill" automatic cruisers... also the earlier G92 optioned 5.0 TPI cars from 1987-89 which also had the performance rear and hotter cam, as well as the even earlier G92 optioned L69 code High Output cars a few years earlier (the pre-EFI 4-barrel models). The L69 H.O (high output) 5-speed cars ordered with G92 could actually be ordered with factory 3.73 gears... all these performance optioned 3rd Gen F-body models gave the 5.0 Mustang absolute hell and were looked over from this era as they were so outnumbered by the regular automatic models. In 1990 the G92 option code became a full performance package rather than simply a rear axle option as in previous model years, the G92 RPO code now included multiple performance upgrades, from performance rear-end and engine oil cooler to performance Exhaust and hotter more aggressive camshaft. GM also offered an answer to the Saleen Mustangs by way of option 1LE, which consisted of the G92 option without A/C which triggered the elimination of other creature comforts and power accessories, and the addition of larger Corvette brakes and other road racing equipment. During this period of the mid-late '80s and early '90s, the 5.0 Mustangs were dominating the streets and the only way an IROC-Z Camaro could hang with or take out a 5.0 Mustang of the era was with these performance optioned models, the G92 5.0 cars, L98 5.7 cars... the rare 5.0 and 5.7 1LE cars and the ultra rare, wolf in sheep's clothing B4C 5.7 cars, which was the 5.7 liter equipped, bare bones stripped down RS Police Interceptor models. The TBI powered Camaro were not even in the same league as the performance version TPI Camaro, or 5.0 Mustang, these 170hp TBI models were GM's economy de-tuned versions and were around 50-60 less horsepower versus the performance optioned TPI models. These non-performing models gave the 3rd Gen F-bodies a bad rep on the street... many think that these were the example of 3rd Gen F-bodies, when in fact, and unlike Ford, GM offered many models, with many engines, camshafts and rear-gear ratios... My Trans Am vs an '11 Mustang 5.0. Stock as far as I could tell, he didn't pop the hood but as you can tell the Exhaust is factory. I'm still running the 10 bolt and baby nuts 255 street tires, hence me babying it off the line to the tune of a 2.2 60 ft. 3rd gear is also shot too, it grinds but I didn't care since this was the last run so I just smashed it into third and finally got a 12 second pass with my 11 second mph. Ha.
