Honda Tests NSX-GT FR Hybrid
What a surprise... Nobody, and even none of the auto media could see this
coming. At a regular "Super GT Test Day" held at TwinRing Motegi on
October 2010, Honda NSX-GT suddenly showed up with no official
announcement. Honda already has HSV for Super GT. Why now NSX-GT?
The vehicle has the looking of NSX-GT, but what lies under the body kit is
a "FR" vehicle. The exact same car was previously spotted just once on
2007 when it was announced that Super GT regulation would change from 2009
and only "3.4L FR" race cars will be allowed. NSX-GT being a "3.5L
mid-ship", it was apparent that the new regulation was designed to shut out
NSX-GT from Super GT. Honda needed to make a tough decision at that time
whether to make a FR version of NSX-GT, or stop racing. The car spotted on
2007 was a result of Honda's ultimate struggle - its hood awkwardly
stretched to store engine in front, sticking Exhaust pipes from the side instead of rear, and
roof-top air intake became useless and had scaled down.
Eventually, Honda managed to survive in racing in Super GT by developing a
new 3.4L FR vehicle, HSV-010 GT on 2010. And what had happened to that "FR
NSX-GT"? There was no doubt of it being scrapped and gone forever, after
all it became a useless prototype race car. The set-up probably did not go
well, and above all, who would like to see a FR NSX?
[NSX-GT with KERS]
But it turned out that "FR NSX-GT" was still alive, secretly stored inside
the garage of Honda R&D team for 3 years. This time, it was chosen for the
vehicle to officially test KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems) which
might be used for 2012 Super GT or later. To reduce development cost of
KERS, Honda volunteered to provide the car and gather data for all race
entrants, and Lexus and Nissan approved it. "FR NSX-GT" was an ideal test
car for all 3 car makers. The car was basically designed to race in Super
GT, but Honda did not develop it till the end and had never used in races,
thus lack of racing data. This was fair deal for Lexus and Nissan because
Honda testing KERS will not bring advantage to HSV.
So many people and media asked the GT Association (management organization
of Super GT) the specification of this "NSX-GT Hybrid", and later an
official announcement was made.
KERS provided for testing purpose for Super GT vehicle is manufactured by
Zytek, the same KERS supplier for F1. It can be used to Boost the car for maximum of 20 seconds to
overtake others, and can be fully recharged after 1 single lap. It is 40kw
strong and is powerful enough to drive cars solely on electric motor on
places such as pit lanes. The KERS itself weigh 50kg.
According to GT Association, the very first test drive of NSX-GT Hybrid was
done a month ago, and this was the first time to seriously test its
potential on race tracks. Test driver of "NSX-GT Hybrid" was Katsutomo
Kaneishi who was a Honda test driver in days of NSX-GT, and currently a
director of Real Racing Team with KEIHIN HSV-010. His best lap of the day
was 1.49"468 at TwinRing Motegi, only 4.453 seconds slower than the fastest
lap of the day by Lexus ENEOS SC430.
There should be tons of more tests coming, but so far it seems possible
KERS might be used at Super GT in the near future.

Twenty-five years after the debut of the original, paradigm-shifting NSX
supercar, Acura revealed the production version of its highly anticipated
successor—the next-generation Acura NSX, developed and produced in the
U.S.—to the world's auto media at the 2015 North American International
Auto Show today. The production model, in a scintillating NSX Red finish,
took the stage with a growl from its twin-turbocharged engine.
The next generation NSX showcases the production styling, design and
specifications of Acura's mid-engine sports hybrid supercar, and Acura
announced key details of the all-new vehicle's design and performance. The
company will begin accepting custom orders for the new NSX starting in the
summer, with customer deliveries expected later in the year.
Specifically created to bring a "new sports experience" to the supercar
segment, the NSX challenges conventional beliefs about supercars — much
as the first generation did a quarter century ago. The approach is realized
through an all-new power unit—a twin-turbocharged 75-degree DOHC V6 engine with a
9-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) and three-electric motor Sport
Hybrid system—integrated with an ultra-rigid and lightweight
multi-material body with world's-first material applications and
manufacturing processes. Developed under the concept of a "human-centered
supercar,” a car that puts the driver first in every aspect of its
design, the next-generation NSX will leverage its state-of-the-art hybrid
supercar power unit, body and chassis to deliver exceptionally intuitive
and immediate response to driver inputs.

The New Honda Acura NSX is a hybrid-electric supercar, and a revival of the
original Acura NSX, which was produced from 1991--2005. The New Honda Acura
NSX is set to be released by Honda's Acura luxury division for the 2015
model year. The New Honda Acura NSX concept retained the 2-door coupe,
mid-engine, with an all-wheel drive formula. Weight is kept down through
the use of a high-tech platform made from lightweight materials. New Honda
Acura NSX power comes from a V6 (a 90 * design actually derived from the
upcoming 2015 F1 Honda engine that McLaren-Honda will be racing) mounted
behind the two occupants that sends its power to the rear wheels and is
augmented by an electric motor. New Honda Acura NSX's SH-AWD incorporates
one electric motor in a dual-clutch transmission, forming a hybrid setup.
Additionally, two more motors can instantly send negative or positive
torque to the New Honda Acura NSX front wheels during cornering for
improved handling and efficiency. Acura claims the New Honda Acura NSX
all-wheel-drive system will provide super car acceleration while offering
better efficiency. Acura did not disclose how much horsepower the New Honda
Acura NSX's V6 engine and three electric motors will produce.
The production New Honda Acura NSX is not expected to be produced until at
least 2015 and will be built at the Marysville Auto Plant in Marysville,
Ohio. An advertisement for the New Honda Acura NSX began airing in early
February 2012, featuring Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno.
Honda plans to develop a GTE racing version of the New Honda Acura NSX to
run at the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 2015 onward. It is unknown if it will
be a factory effort or if it will be run as a customer program, but Honda
expects to race the New Honda Acura NSX in America - likely the American Le
In December 2007, American Honda CEO, Tetsuo Iwamura, confirmed a new
supercar powered by a V10 engine would make its introduction to the market
by 2010. The new sports car would be based on the Acura ASCC (Advanced
Sports Car Concept) introduced at the 2007 North American International
Auto Show. With Honda CEO Takeo Fukui challenging the developers to
make the vehicle faster than its
rivals, prototypes of the New Honda Acura NSX were seen testing on the
Nürburgring in June 2008. On 17 December 2008, Fukui announced during
a speech about Honda's revised financial forecast that, due to poor
economic conditions, all plans for a next-generation NSX had been
cancelled. In March 2010, the Acura NSX project changed name to Honda
HSV-010 GT and was entered in the Japanese SuperGT Championship. The
HSV-010 GT is powered by a 3.4-liter V8 sending somewhere in excess of 500
hp (373 kW) through the sequential manual gearbox from Ricardo.[citation
In April 2011, Automotive News reported that Honda is developing a new
sports car to be a successor to the NSX. It reports that Honda CEO Ito
said the car would be exhilarating to drive but also environmentally
friendly. It is expected the New Honda Acura NSX will incorporate an
electric drivetrain to give the gasoline engine a Boost. Back in late 2010, Motor Trend
reported that Honda was looking into a mid-engine hybrid sports car, to be
an NSX successor.
In September 2011, during filming of The Avengers, Robert Downey, Jr.
(playing the role of Iron Man) was spotted in an exotic sportscar based on
the New Honda Acura NSX by Acura, made specifically for the film,
rather than the Audi R8 he previously drove in Iron Man and Iron Man
In May 2013, it was announced that the New Honda Acura NSX will be built in
an all-new production facility in Ohio adjacent to two existing Honda
plants. Production of New Honda Acura NSX was chosen at a new Performance
Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio, housed inside Honda's former
North American Logistics facility and located in the midst of Honda's
existing R&D and production engineering operations. The associates at
Honda's engine plant in Anna, Ohio, will assemble the New Honda Acura NSX
powertrain. Mass production of New Honda Acura NSX was set to begin in
As part of the New Honda Acura NSX launch, an online configuration tool was
