[0-60] Duryea Hill Climb
The Blue Mountain Region SCCA hosts the longest hill in the PHA series. Named for the obscure automobile maker and following the same route that Charles Duryea used to test his cars, this is a 2.3 mile hill located in a beautiful city park in downtown Reading, PA. With a history dating back to 1951, festivities this year will include a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the automobile. Possibly the most diverse and challenging hill in the Northeast, Duryea boasts 11 turns (most of which are negotiated in the first half of the course) coupled with some high speeds at the top. Hillclimbing presents unique challenges that can only be experienced in this venue of motorsports. A perfect example can be found in turn 6 at Duryea. This turn has a nickname (which cannot be printed in this magazine) that describes the mood of a driver as they discover they have hit the brake either too early or too late. The challenge faced here is the quintessential dilemma of hillclimbing: how long can you stay on the gas when entering the turn without causing the course workers to scramble into the woods? Regular Car Reviews: 1991 Toyota MR2 SW20 Turbo
This is the most dangerous car ever made and it is also a perfect expression of The Human Condition. We want to know where "The Limit" lies and damn self-preservation. This is the most dangerous car, because it is cheap, accessible, and exists in great numbers. This is opposed to a Porsche 911SC which is more dangerous in a mechanical sense but is not as accessible as the MR2





HILLHO MR2 "Big Wet Lucky Save!" - Duryea Hillclimb 2010 - DNF run
Slick conditions, turbo Boost, and oil on the course don't mix. I should of sensed it at Turn 3, when I pushed to nearly a stop. Snap oversteer occurs exiting Turn 5. This could have been really UGLY... Fortunately, minimal damage resulted only to Exhaust and rocker. Called it a day after this incident, and proceeded to change my shorts. Could have been a "pin-ball" across to the Armco rail, or up the bank of rock, and-or both ends of the car. I realize this fact, and I am grateful. Lesson learned, and reminded...deja-vue-dude.





The MR2 Connection
For many, the "golden age" of motoring began in the late '60s and concluded in the very early '70s. It is easy to get caught up in the cars of that time period and overlook significant cars that came both earlier and later than this sweet spot of time that produced cars we all love. The MR2 is one of these cars. Starting in 1984, Toyota, created a recipe for success by building a two-seater, mid-engine, rear-wheel drive car that offered performance well beyond its affordable price tag. With the first generation and its hard angular lines, Toyota continued the success into the second generation starting in 1989. The second-generation MR2 morphed into a more rounded and sculpted body and drew many comparisons in publications of the time as the "poor-man's Ferrari". Many MR2 owners have a strong connection to their cars; for them, the MR2 isn't just a car to enjoy, it is a way of life. For the Texas MR2 Owners Club and especially for club member Masruque Murtoza Ali these words ring true.
