Pros of my Scion 2011 xB over my Subaru WRX
So far I've put 50,000 miles on my Scion xB and I do not regret this
purchase at all (which shock those who are pro-Subaru, which is fine). The
2007 Subaru WRX didn't suit my driving needs, which is driving a total of
1.5 hours a day in traffic, car trips with two dogs, boyfriend, and
luggage, and the high cost of maintenance/insurance.
Of course, if you need the speed that comes with a turbo, then the xB is not for you.
Subaru WRX Cons:
-91 Octane Gas is expensive
-Car Insurance is expensive (Bare min. insurance for Subaru: $170/month,
bare min. insurance for Scion: $90/month)
-Symmetrical All Wheel Drive means you have to replace all wheels if one
goes out. (I had to do this twice while owning my car, so my $200 repair
was actually a $1200 repair)
-Fixing anything within the engine is expensive, because of the "turbo"
-Only the Subaru dealership could fix "check engine light" issues (unless
you can find a shop that has the "Subaru" tools to accurately diagnose
engine problem. I was unable to.)
-My commute involves lots of traffic, and it was difficult to drive my car
in 5 mph traffic.
-Spartan (bare) Interior
-CD player would only work for 2 hours straight. After that it'd get too
hot and start skipping.
-Random guys ask me if my driving my boyfriend's car, which is annoying.
Subaru WRX Pros:
-Great performance. 230 horsepower
-Handles well in severe rain
-Has high safety ratings
-Impresses "car" guys.
I began looking for a car that would be less expensive maintenance-wise
(which is why I didn't go with another Subaru) and have more cargo room.
Originally I was looking at hatchbacks and was close to getting the Honda
Fit, but, after a test drive, the 117 horsepower wasn't doing it
for me. And it still felt cramped.
The Scion xB had everything I wanted. This car is geared toward a younger
generation, so it's designed to be very safe, has a great stereo, and has
lots of room for modifications.
Scion xB Pros:
-This car is extremely safe:
-Mirror LED Turn Signals
-Because the Scion is very safe and not a sports sedan, insurance is very
cheap. (Bare Minimum Car Insurance-- Subaru: $170/month ; Scion xB:
-"Little, Big Car" Feel (deceptively spacious interior, yet not as big as a
-Cheap overall price ($17,000 for Scion, $27,000 for Subaru WRX)
-Awesome Pioneer stereo.
-Digital Speedometer Display
-Digital Readout displays the following: current mpg, average mpg, average
mph, how many miles until the gas tank is empty, and the time elapsed
during a trip
-USB and Auxiliary port
-Stereo Display shows the artist and song title when you play CDs, use MP3
player, or use XM.
-You can control the volume and change track/station through the steering
-Lots of room for storage (6 cup holders, center console, shelf over glove
-Lots of cargo space (with seats folded down-- Scion xB: 70 cubic feet,
Honda Fit: 57 cubic feet, Subaru: 11 cubic feet)
(Subaru w/o turbo: 173 hp, Honda Fit:
-Cheaper 87 octane gas
-30 mpg average (although this isn't as fuel economic as other hatchbacks,
but better than my Subaru)
-Drives well in traffic! I can cruise comfortably at 5 mph, whereas, in
the Subaru, I had to constantly flip into neutral, give it gas, neutral,
gas, which can be very Exhausting.
-After one year with my Scion, I actually have money in my savings account!
I save around $100 per month on gas/insurance compared to my Subaru.
Some specific Pros with my car:
-Silver color means my car never looks dirty!
-Getting XM installed ($400 more) is very worth it. Especially if you
drive more than an hour each day like me.
Scion xB Cons:
Plastic scratches easily
People hate the breadbox shape
Within 6 months of owning my car, I was mailed 8 long surveys to fill out
about my Scion. (I filled out 2 and trashed the rest).
I think the breadbox look could turn buyers away, but after sitting inside,
I can see why all cars should have that shape! it feels so roomy! This
car is a must have, especially for drivers with long commutes. So far
I've taken my car on plenty of long car trips (ranging from 3 hour drives
to 5 hours) and my boyfriend and I don't miss my cramped Subaru.
