While the VW Beetle convertible has a soft top that folds down for topless driving fun, the Volkswagen Eos has a hardtop that also folds down in a ballet of engineering prowess. Both car will seat 4 people and both cars are front wheel drive. Both cars of course offer year round driving fun but how do these convertibles fare in the cold North when the snow starts to fly and the roads freeze. We decided to find out by putting both convertibles to the very first TFLcar 0-16-0 MPH test, as well as our brand new snowball performance roof test in another fun TFLcar Mashup review.

While they build over 300,000 of first generation Beetle convertibles, they built over 21 million of the same basic car but with a hard top. Recently Volkswagen rolled out the 3rd generation of the iconic Beetle at the LA Auto Show but at the same time they brought some of the original convertibles to California. In the exclusive TFLcar video we drive an original 1979 1500 cc fuel injected model that had only 250 miles on the clock when we took the wheel. In fact this museum car from Germany is a time machine straight from the factory floor.

Now the Volkswagen Beetle family just got a whole lot bigger with the addition of a cabriolet (convertible) model with a ton of different trims and 3 engine offerings. The 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible has a base price of $24,995. Volkswagen first introduced the cabriolet or convertible to the world way back in 1949. This is obviously a very iconic vehicle. When you are shopping for convertibles under $30k you have a few options including the: FIAT 500c, MINI Cooper Convertible, Ford Mustang Convertible, and Chevrolet Convertible. But when it comes to iconic, comfortable, affordable, and economical vehicles the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible really sets itself apart. The base engine on the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet is a tried and true 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine producing 170 horsepower. That's the engine you are going to have to pick if you want to stay below the $25k price point. There is also a 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that is the same engine found in the Volkswagen GTI. This turbo monster produces 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft. of torque with lots of zip and lots of fun. But it's the 2.0 liter TDI engine that sets this car apart from the rest of the competition. The TDI motor produces 140 horsepower and 236 lb-ft. of torque while getting 41 MPG. There are 2 transmissions available: a 6-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual. From a driving perspective the base model and the TDI pretty much drive the same because they have the same suspension. The turbo model does have a sport suspension so it will give you a bit more dynamic driving experience. But make no mistake about it; this 2013 Volkswagen Beetle TDI Convertible has a ton of torque and is a lot of fun.
