For a peppy and extremely well designed vehicle that is skimpy on petrol use, the A170 has all this and more. Fire the little Mercedes-Benz A170 up, and the motor spins freely into life. The 1.7 litre engine breathes in normally aspirated fashion and has fuel injection that, with pin-point accuracy, feeds the fuel into the combustion chamber with frugality always its main goal. The 85 kW engine is a four cylinder unit that loves to perform, making the 0-100 km/h sprint in an accomplished ten to eleven second bracket. Whether in three-door or five-door guise, and whether linked to the smooth five speed manual gearbox or smooth CVT, progress is always swift and in control. Mercedes-Benz also goes the extra mile for safety, with the use of front, side and window airbags that run the length of the windows. Seatbelt force limiters and pretensioners also add to greater safety. There are front and rear ABS brakes with brake assist to ensure you stop very smartly. Mercedes also has added Stability Control with crash-responsive front head restraints. The A170 comes with air-conditioning, tinted windows, power locks, height adjustable driver's seat, a rain-sensing windscreen wipers, automatic headlamps both front and rear fog lights. The Mercedes-Benz A170 engineers also went the extra mile when designing the interior for room and comfort. The seats are conforming and quite comfortable, and there is ample room for everyone. The comfort doesn't stop there: the suspension is designed to provide a more comfortable and smooth ride, even over rough, harsh surfaces. Mercedes has done this without sacrificing stability and handling. The Mercedes-Benz A170 holds its own on the road in a very accomplished fashion, and provides an extremely competitve package that is economic in purchase price and in running costs.
