BMW 3 Series vs BMW 4 Series - Which Should You Buy?
www.Cars.co.za - BMW make a fantastic coupe called the 4 Series. We drove
the range-topping 435i las year (see our channel for that vid) and we were
hugely impressed. But there was always the rumour that BMW would give the 4
Series the same treatment as the 6 Series, and launch a 4-door version,
dubbed the Gran Coupe.
And there was always the possibility that this would end up being a
terrible idea. But it wasn't, and the 4 Series Gran Coupe is very good in
almost every way.
However, BMW already has a very successful sedan – the 3 Series. It has
been the sector-defining car for as long as anyone can remember, and the
latest generation is a solid example of what BMW can offer.
And so you, the buyer, are now faced with a difficult decision: should you
plump up and spend the extra cash on a 4-door 4 Series, or is the 3 Series
more than enough?
We’ve tried to answer that question in our latest video, lining up the
328i against the 428i Gran Coupe.

In place of a central shared information display for driver and front
passenger, the BMW Vision Future Luxury offers front passengers their own
Passenger Information Display. This display is connected to the Driver
Information Display via a touch-sensitive panel, where information can be
exchanged between driver and front passenger using swiping movements.
Applications like booking opera tickets online direct from the vehicle via
the BMW ConnectedDrive Luxury Concierge service can be displayed in the
Passenger Information Display, where they don’t risk distracting the
driver. The relevant functions can be conveniently controlled by the front
passenger using the iDrive Controller with touch-sensitive interface. In
the back, two Rear Seat Displays set into carbon surrounds, and a
detachable Rear Seat Touch Command Tablet, put the finishing touch to the
integrated user interface concept of the BMW Vision Future Luxury. These
displays can communicate with the front displays and also with the BMW
ConnectedDrive services. Everything from trip-related information like
speed and journey time to information relating to the Luxury Concierge
Services can be displayed here in simple and customised form. Two large,
deeply contoured single seats add to the appeal, inviting passengers to
retire into their own personal “comfort zone”. A retractable table, the
angled Rear Seat Displays and the rigid backs of the front seats create a
very private ambience, sectioning this area off from the rest of the
interior. The sense of privacy is accentuated by modern, flowing geometry
and the use of select materials, with lavish wood surfaces extending from
the rear parcel shelf to enfold the rear seat occupants in a cosseting
three- dimensional space. Strategically placed lighting slats integrated
into the wood echo the surrounding styling and, with their warm glow,
accentuate the modern and cosy ambience. Finest-quality aniline leather in
Batavia brown and a lighter Silk shade, Silk nubuk leather and the warm
brown, layered lime wood all have a natural aura which offers unique visual
appeal and quality. The division between darker materials in the upper
areas and light materials in the lower areas creates a feeling of warmth
and a luxurious sense of space.
The BMW 7 Series is a line of full-size luxury vehicles produced by the
German automaker BMW. Introduced in 1977, it is BMW's flagship car and is
only available as a sedan or extended-length limousine. The 7 Series
traditionally introduces technologies and exterior design themes before
they trickle down to smaller sedans in BMW's lineup.
A more modified version of the 7-series is the Alpina B7, made by Alpina.
The B7 has performance-focused features - aesthetic features include body
and bumper skirts, uniquely designed wheels, and a slightly modified
interior. More importantly, the Alpina B7 features a revised engine and
other performance enhancements. For example, the E65/66 (745i/Li and
750i/Li from 2003-2008) versions of the B7 featured a supercharged 4.4L V8
The 5th generation BMW F01/F02 went on sale in November 2008 and is
currently still in production. The BMW F01/ BMW F02 was the first BMW
7-series available with an 8-speed automatic transmission and BMW all-wheel
drive. It is the first BMW 7-series where all engines are turbocharged. The BMW ActiveHybrid7 was the first
7-series to use an electric motor.
The BMW front suspension is a double wishbone design, instead of the
MacPherson struts used on previous generations.
It is in this generation that BMW changed the nomenclature from E to BMW
F01, thereby making it the first BMW to have so.
Also the BMW model numbers have been changed for the new engine lineup. BMW
730d/Ld for the 3.0l inline six 258bhp diesel, BMW ActiveHybrid 7 for the
3.0l inline six 310bhp petrol hybrid, BMW 750i/Li for the 4.4l V8 473bhp
petrol, BMW 750d/Ld for the 3.0l inline six 385bhp triple turbo diesel and BMW 760Li for the 6.0l V12 544bhp
All the engines are twin turbocharged
for maximum efficiency and power. For 2014 it received BMW's new second
generaton iDrive touchpad.
In the driver’s and front passenger’s area, precisely defined lines and
surfaces create a sense of exclusive dynamism. The design of the instrument
panel closely complements the design of the displays themselves.

In this DIY and How-To video, we'll outline the procedure for properly
using the control arm bushing remover and installer tool for removing or
installing the front control arm bushings on BMW 3-series models from 1984
One of the most common sources for front-end vibrations on BMWs and MINIs
is worn front control arm bushings. If all other front-end suspension and
steering parts are verified to be in proper functioning condition, it is
likely that the control arm bushings have become soft and are allowing the
suspension control arms to oscillate, causing the vibrations that can be
felt through the chassis and the steering wheel.
Replacing the control arm bushings on the 3-series BMW models from 1984
through 2005 (E30, E36, E46), can be accomplished by most DIYers in just a
couple hours .... If we have the proper tools. In addition the a floor
jack, jack-stands and common metric tools ranging from 16mm through 19mm
(in most cases), we need the control arm bushing removal and installation
In this DIY we will show how to remove and replace the control arm bushings
on the BMW 3-series models as noted above, using the control arm bushing
replacement tool set. Note that we will be installing the pre-assembled
control arm bushing and mount bracket assemblies. This will allow us to
replace the bushings without access to a hydraulic press.
Control arm bushing removal and install tool:
Bentley repair manual; as applicable to BMW or MINI model:
½" drive socket set, to include; 16mm through 19mm sockets (depending on
model), ratchet and extensions.
24mm combination wrench
27mm combination wrench or ½" drive socket
Control arm bushings with mount brackets, as applicable to BMW or MINI
This general outline for 3-series control arm bushing replacement assumes
that the proper Bentley repair manual is at hand.
1) Lift and properly support the front of the vehicle, so that the front
wheels are off the ground.
2) Remove the wheel/tire assembly.
NOTE: Some models may require removal of splash panels or shields in order
to access the control arm bushing mount brackets.
3) Remove the rear control arm bushing mount bracket by removing the two
bolts securing the bracket to the vehicle. Note the position and overall
relationship of the bracket and how it is mounted to the uni-body frame
rail, for the future re-installation.
4) Use the control arm bushing removal/install tool to remove the bushing
and bracket assembly from the end of the control arm pin.
5) Press the new bushing/mount assembly onto the control arm, using the
bushing removal/install tool. Note that some urethane bushings may not
require a press for this operation. Note that rubber bushings require a
lubricant to allow them to be pressed onto the arm. BMW specifies a
special lube that dries after assembly .... we like to use Silicone spray,
diluted dish soap or hair spray as alternatives. Take note of any alignment
marks, as well as the proper orientation (left / right and front / back) of
the mount bracket. Most of the applications will install with the mounting
arm, on the mount bracket, being parallel and in-line (on the same plane)
with the forward end of the control arm.
6) Install the bolts for the bushing mount bracket and torque to specs
(see the proper Bentley manual).
7) Replace the splash shields and the wheels/tires and torque the lug bolts
to the proper torque spec. Lower the vehicle.
