FULL Camaro COVERAGE @ INSIDELINE.COM:
The last thing General Motors needs right now is to appear as if it's stuck in the past, creating gas-guzzling cars that are out of step with what the federal government thinks is the future.
So even when Chevrolet steps into the way-back machine to unveil the 426-horspower retro-inflected 2010 Chevy Camaro SS, it's careful to mention that this muscle/pony car is the "sports car for the 21st century" and emphasizes the Camaro's fuel economy ratings more than its 0-60-mph performance.
So we did what had to be done. We dropped an asphalt-melting burnout in the parking lot of a former seminary that was of such destructive length that the guys hired by Chevy to prep and clean the Camaros had time to wander over and say, "Stop. You're done."
Had a Dairy Queen been available we would have laid a patch in front of that, too. Look, man. We've been waiting for years for the arrival of this car; there will be time to talk about balance and the quality of the interior materials later.
Camaro Fights Mustang and Challenger - Muscle Car Comparison
MORE MUSCLE CAR MADNESS @ INSIDELINE.COM:
In 2002, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second human being to set foot on the
moon, punched a guy in the face for accusing him of faking the moon
landing. Buzz was 72 years old at the time.
Go right ahead and question the existence of the 2010 Ford Mustang GT, 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T
and 2010 Chevy Camaro
SS and they, too, might just give you a knuckle sandwich in the kisser.
Like Mr. Aldrin, they bear names from long ago that have made a collective
return to the limelight. Like Mr. Aldrin, they are American heroes with
unparalleled legacies reaching across decades. And like Mr. Aldrin, they
have Ph.Ds in kicking ass.
Their makers may have proven that they have the financial acumen of a blind
yak. However, we submit these pony car icons as proof that the home team
can extract their craniums from their nether regions once in awhile and
knock the cover off the ball.
Fast New Shelby Mustang GT500 Full Test
FULL Mustang GT500 COVERAGE
It's something like trying to drive the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 on a
roller-coaster, only there are no steel tracks to keep you from slithering
off the pavement and ending up in a flaming heap of 540-horsepowerMustang.
You can't even see where you're going, really. Hard on it, the GT500's rear
tires begin spinning just as you can see nothing but sky in the windshield.
You're on top of the hump at the entrance to Infineon Raceway's Turn 6, and
as your stomach and both right-side tires go weightless, you start a long,
long dive to the left, sliding sideways all the way down the hill and
around the 180-degree corner.
The Shelby GT500 is so torqued up with the cornering force from the
low-profile 19-inch tires and the drive from the supercharged V8 that you
can practically hear the welds popping in the chassis. But something is
different this time — palms are not slick with sweat, tires are not
threatening to let go at the most inopportune moment and steering left in
order to go right is a joy and not a reflex of self-preservation.
The 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 gets 2 mpg more on the EPA highway cycle this
year. The Ford engineers are really proud of this. But every time we make
another lap and slide down Turn 6, we have our doubts that fuel economy is
what this car is about.
Serving Our Inner Adolescent
We're behaving like adults as the Ford engineers tell us all about the 2010
Ford Shelby GT500, even as we hear a couple of the cars making shake-down
runs on the quarter-mile strip at Infineon Raceway a few hundred feet away.
And in many ways, the GT500 itself is trying to act more like an adult,
casting aside the muscle-bound character of the 2007 Ford Shelby GT500.
As the Ford people tell us, they started with the limited-production 2008
Ford Shelby GT500KR, the exclusive (1,700 examples built) and
revenue-enhancing (MSRP $79,995) Mustang produced last year. And aside
from a few fewer Shelby badges (the KR had many to spare), the GT500 is
like the KR in almost every way, except it's built at the Mustang plant in Flat Rock, Michigan,
rather than at the Shelby facility in Las Vegas.
You can tell as soon as you open the new GT500's hood, complete with
hot-air extractors. The supercharged and intercooled DOHC 5.4-liter V8 with
its truck-style iron block is still in place, but now it carries a conical
air filter in its own sealed cold-air box behind the left-side headlight,
an innovation that increases airflow while resisting power-sapping heat
soak. For the GT500, this new cold-air intake required the migration of the
iconic Cobra badge on the grille from the left side to the right side.
Nissan GT-R SpecV Exclusive
MORE NISSAN GT-R SPEC V @ INSIDELINE.COM:
The 2009 Nissan GT-R SpecV breaks the law.
Actually the GT-R has been breaking the law since last year. Before then,
the Japanese car industry kept its high-performance cars below a ceiling of
280 horsepower, an
unwritten, yet very real limit established by the Japanese government back
But the Nissan GT-R shattered the glass ceiling with its 480-hp twin-turbo V6. And now the 2009 Nissan GT-R
SpecV pushes even farther past the barrier, further reinforcing the GT-R's
status as a true supercar. Just over a year since the car's introduction,
Nissan has given a shot of steroids to Godzilla, creating the most extreme
road-going machine that Japan has ever seen.
And we've got the test numbers to prove it.
Fast & Furious 4: Ford Gran Torino
MORE FAST & FURIOUS @ INSIDELINE.COM:
What Clint Eastwood did for the 1972 Gran Torino in Gran Torino, Fast &
Furious will try to undo. Because in this movie, the very nastiest bad guy
— you know, the chief henchman who does the dirtiest deeds and dies just
before the big boss bad guy gets his — drives a '72 Gran Torino
The inspiration for the Gran Torino in Fast & Furious comes from a similar
Torino built for Dan Widmann at Steve Strope's Pure Vision Design — the
same shop from which emerged the Hammer Road Runner that's also featured in
the film. Strope brought Widmann's Torino to a casting session and a star
— well, a co-star — was born.
The one significant visual change between Widmann's Torino and the replicas
built for the film is that Widmann's car is blue, and the bad guy Torinos
were painted green. It seems that blue was already assigned as super-dreamy
Paul Walker's color in Fast & Furious, so the bad attitude character "Fenix
Rise" (played by Laz Alonzo) would have to wear green.
Little matter, however, as the Gran Torino looks dang good in green.
To portray Fenix's FoMoCo, the picture car department acquired six '72
Torino Sportsroof models and one '73. As with the Charger, some of the
stunt cars were fit with Chevy crate V8s and automatic transmissions, but
at least one of the cars was originally equipped with a 429 and four-speed
manual transmission. Five of the cars were either destroyed during
production or ripped apart for parts.
Among the Torinos destroyed was that 429 four-speed car. Sometimes evil
must be done in order to portray evil.

2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 vs 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition! - Head 2 Head Ep. 52
On this episode of Head 2 Head, Jonny Lieberman travels to Barber
Motorsports Park for a head to head matchup with the brand new Chevy Camaro Z/28 and a well
known heavyweight, the Nissan GT-R. But not just any GT-R, the 2014 Track
Edition which packs a 545 hp twin-turbo
V-6, a 6-speed dual clutch transmission, sticky Dunlop tires and AWD
traction into a car without rear seats. The Z/28, by way of contrast,
features a massive 7.0-liter naturally-aspirated V-8, a 6-speed manual
transmission, and tail-out RWD. While it does still have rear seats, nearly
every other non-essential component has been removed. Moreover, the Z28's
tires might be even stickier! The front ones, enormous 305-sections, are
certainly the widest tires ever bolted to a production car. Both cars are
phenomenal, and both cars make rational men scream, "Gimme!" But only one
can come out on top. Watch and find out!
