2002 Jeep Liberty Sport 0-60 Test The Jeep Liberty: The Jeep Liberty is a compact SUV produced under the Chrysler Company. Introduced in 2002 as a replacement for the Cherokee, the Liberty was priced to fall between the prices of the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. It was the smallest Jeep SUV until the Compass and Patriot were created in 2007. The Liberty featured a unibody-on-ladder-frame construction, which added stiffness to its ride and handling for enhanced off-road capabilities. The Liberty is assembled in Toledo in the United States, as well as in Egypt and Venezuela. The Liberty's design came from a combination of two concept cars named the Dakar and Jeepster. It was created to replace the discontinued Jeep Cherokee. The Liberty is available in three trim levels; the top end Limited, a more rugged looking Renegade and the base Sport. All trims were available with either 2WD or 4WD. In 2007, the Renegade trim level was replaced with the Latitude. The Liberty was the first Jeep to use two new PowerTech engines; the 150 hp 2.4 L I4 which was dropped in 2006, and the 210 hp 3.7 L V6. The VM Motori 2.8 L I4 turbodiesel, became available in CRD 2005--2006 Sport and Limited models. The diesel version generated 160 horsepower and 295 lbs-ft of torque. Chrysler introduced the CRD to gauge the marketability of diesel engines in North America in comparison with the European market. The Liberty was also the first Jeep vehicle to use rack and pinion steering.

In 1993, after a release delay, the Jeep Grand Cherokee was made available to the public. Over the years the Grand Cherokee has seen 4 generations: the ZJ, the WJ, WK, and the WK2. An SRT version of the Grand Cherokee was introduced in 2005. The original SRT Jeep was powered by a 420 hp SRT8 6.1 L Hemi engine and included Brembo brakes, dual performance Exhaust, a sportier suspension set-up which allows the Jeep to hold 0.92 g on a skid-pad, a Mercedes-Benz 5-speed transmission, and a specially designed AWD system. The SRT8 Jeep is known as the fastest accelerating vehicle in the SRT8 lineup with 0-60 times recorded as low as 4.6 seconds. The SRT8 Jeep can achieve a top speed of 170 mph since its speed is ungoverned.

GM quickly devised a response to the Navigator and in 1999 GM introduced the first generation of the Escalade. The original Escalade was launched with the 5.7 L Vortec 5700 V8 at 255 hp engine and Autotrac selectable 4x4. Over the years the Escalade became infamous for having almost identical designs as the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Yukon Denali. GM did not produce a 2001 Escalade but instead redesigned the SUV for the 2002 model year. In 2004 the Escalade received many different changes to the luxury of the vehicle including optional 20 inch rims, XM satellite radio, second-row bucket seats, and a tire pressure monitoring system. In 2005 a Platinum edition of the Escalade was introduced. The Platinum edition featured heated and cooled cup holders, 20 inch chrome wheels, moon roof, three DVD screens, and chrome accents on the steering wheel and grille. In 2007 the Escalade underwent another remodeling. The 2007 Escalade's engine is an all-aluminum 6.2 L Vortec V8. This pushrod engine includes variable valve timing, a first in a mass-produced non-overhead cam engine. The engine produces 403 hp (23 hp more than the GMC Yukon Denali) and 417 lbs of torque. The Escalade comes with a six-speed 6L80 automatic transmission.

Toyota Celica: The name "Celica" is derived from the Latin word coelica meaning "heavenly". Throughout its career the Celica has been powered by many different four cylinder engines. The Celica was first sold in a RWD until 1985, when the car's layout was changed from RWD to FWD. During the first three generations, American market Celicas were powered by various versions of Toyota's R series engines. The four-wheel drive turbo model, the All-trac or GT-Four, was produced from 1986 to 1999. Variable Valve Timing emerged in late 1997 and became standard in all Celica models from 2000 on. Through seven generations, the model has gone through many revisions and design forks, including the Toyota Celica Supra later known as the Toyota Supra. The Celica also led to the creation of the Celica Camry later known as the Toyota Camry. In 1999 Toyota launched a sales campaign named Project Genesis. The projects goal was to attract younger buyers with the evolution of three cheap and attractive vehicles: the 7th Celica, MR2 Spyder, and Echo. The 7th generation of the Celica was created from a close resemblance of Toyota's 1999 XYR concept. The new Celica's first model, launched in 2000 came in two different models. The ZZT230 (GT) was powered by a relatively economical 1.8 L 4-cylinder 140 hp 1ZZ-FE engine and the ZZT231 (GT-S) powered by a higher-performance 1.8 L 4-cylinder 180 2ZZ-GE version, developed by Yamaha, featuring a two-step variable valve lift control in conjunction with its variable valve timing.

The manual transmission is a pretty rare option for the 2002 IS300 so this was a lucky find. The Lexus IS300: The Lexus IS series was introduced in 1998 to be slotted below the ES in the Lexus lineup. It was originally named the Toyota Altezza (Italian for "highness") in Japan until the introduction of the Lexus brand. The Altezza name also refers to the chromed taillights fitted to the first generation model, known as 'Altezza lights'. According to Lexus, the "S badge stands for "Intelligent Sport". The first-generation was codenamed XE10 and launched in Japan in 1998. The XE10 variants were released to the rest of the world after 1999. The XE10 IS300 was powered by a 2JZ-GE I6 engine which produced 215 hp. The original IS300 was only sold with an automatic transmission until 2002.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of the Liberty in two 40 mph frontal offset crash tests into deformable barriers. In the first test, the airbag deployed late because an airbag sensor wire shorted out early in the crash. This led DaimlerChrysler to develop a fix for this problem by shielding the wiring, and the manufacturer has initiated a recall. The Institute tested a second Liberty with the fix and the airbag inflated much earlier. Ratings of the Liberty are based on the results of the second test, except structural performance is based on both tests. Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was reasonably well controlled in the second test. The dummy's head leaned out the open side window during rebound, then it hit the window frame. Injury measures — In the second test, measures taken from the chest indicate low risk of injuries to this body region in a crash of this severity. Forces on the head and neck indicate that injuries to the head and neck would be possible. Forces on the left tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be possible. Head acceleration from the window frame hit was negligible.
