CLK 55 AMG Mercedes 2003
In 1994, development began on the W203 C-Class. Design work commenced in mid-1994, with the final design being approved in December 1995 by the executive board.[6] Design patents were filed on 20 April 1998 and 4 March 1999.[7][8] Testing began in 1997, with development concluding in 2000. The second generation C-Class was introduced in March 2000. The sedan debuted with a range of inline-four and V6 petrol engines and inline-four and -five diesels. Most of the engines were carried over from the W202, but the C 320 was exclusive, offering 160 kW (218 PS). The diesels now featured common rail direct fuel injection and variable geometry turbochargers. Six-speed manual gearboxes were now standard for the entire range, except the C 320. Notably, for the first time, the number designations were no longer equivalent to the engine displacement, more specifically in the C 200 (1.8-litre), C 240 (2.6-litre) and C 200 CDI (2.2-litre). Mercedes-AMG GmbH, commonly known as AMG, is the high performance division of Mercedes-Benz. AMG independently engineers, manufactures and customizes Mercedes Benz AMG vehicles. Mercedes-AMG is headquartered in Affalterbach, Baden-Würtemberg, Germany. AMG was originally an independent engineering firm specializing in performance improvements for Mercedes vehicles; Daimler-Benz AG took a controlling interest in 1990, then became sole owner of AMG in 2005. Mercedes-AMG GmbH is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler AG. AMG models typically have more aggressive looks, a higher level of performance, better handling, better stability and more extensive use of carbon fiber than their regular Mercedes counterparts.[2] AMG models are typically the most expensive and highest-performance of each Mercedes-Benz class.[2] AMG variants are usually badged with two numerals, as opposed to regular Mercedes-Benz vehicles which have three (e.g. C 63 as opposed to C 350).[3] Traditionally, the two numerical digits signified the engine's displacement size, however, recent models have deviated from such correlation.
