Key Stuck In Ignition HHR
For lack of a video dedicated to how to remove a stuck key in the ignition of an HHR, I've decided to upload this video. The only other video as of Feb 2012 shows the man shoving his finger into the access panel and back out, and then spending the last of the nine minutes talking about how he replaced the gear shifter. It's interesting, but I didn't want to sit through nine minutes of video with the car stuck in the running position to see if he even goes back to what he pressed. Apparently this plunger is there to release the key in the event of a broken gear shifter or low battery. In my case, the evidence points to a seized ignition lock cylinder. In any case, trying to remove the key for me is impossible due to the cylinder being seized up, but the button should work in any other case. This video will hopefully be seen by people, whom, like me, learned of such a button on their smartphones, but not have to spend a good hour in an emergency situation trying to find this button due to lack of information on the internet. Before any owner's manual Nazis flood my comments page with "Read the owner's manual, STUPID!", my Chevy HHR never came with an owner's manual. I saved a PDF version of the manual on my computer, but not on my phone, and my computer was forty miles away. I tried to find a PDF version of the owner's manual on the Chevy website, but their mobile site wouldn't let me do that. So I turned to internet forums and YouTube, but couldn't find any real description of what to feel for, what to look for, nothing. So my car was running for an hour while I tried to find this information before pulling out the fuel pump relay fuse and disconnecting the negative battery terminal before spending another good hour and a half still looking for this magic button. The other Google site that I found the night of my plight, was on the ChevyHHR.Net page when I typed in the key words: Key stuck in ignition Chevy HHR I didn't find anything that described what the button looked like, so I updated the page, since it is on the first page of results from Google. So, once again GM has done it. They invented something that failed and yet again they don't have a solution. This feature should not be added to any car, even if someone steals the car, the odds of this system to stop working are zero to none. Once WE THE OWNERS need to replace an ignition cylinder or an ECM, then the system fails for us. And the Dealership has NO CLUE how to fix it other than the helpful tip to crack the ECM open and replace the "memory chip".
