Cutting White Wire on Saturn Ion to Fix Starting Issue
UPDATE 3/21/2014: My car is still working fine. I still have not had a problem with it starting since I posted this video 5 years ago. Still on the same battery. Thanks for all the comments! This is me showing how I cut the passlock wire on my car. My car would not start on damp, cold mornings, often taking 30 - 40 minutes to get it to start. After reading several forums I found users who were doing this to "fix" the problem. I thought I would tape this for anyone who was thinking of doing the same but doesn't know anything about cars. Like me. :) Note: I owe thanks to meron for the post at this link http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f1137a7/83 it is where I first heard about this solution. Update 10.6.2012: I added a switch, I believe it was this one http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062533 I installed it with it in the off position, started the car, switched it to On while the car was running and the service engine light went away. Car started fine after that. I just shut it off again as it was cold one morning this week and I had trouble getting the car started. Once I got it running, turned it off and haven't had trouble starting it since. YMMV

2003 Saturn Ion that won't start in cold weather
Documenting my attempt to use a fix I found on the internet to resolve an issue that plagues 2003-2004 Saturn Ions. The models in this year can have difficulty starting in cold weather. At first it was pretty sporadic for me but this year it was almost constant. In the video I replace the ignition switch which actually ended up resolving my problem. I guess there is a lubricant in this switch that SHOULDN'T harden in cold weather but the ones that shipped in the cars of these years do. Total cost $29.99 and about 30 minutes of time. The specific symptoms you will see with this issue are (usually in cold weather) you will try to start the car and it might crank a couple times but then die. When you try to start it again you will hear a short fire but then it stops. This is because the security system has kicked in and shut off fuel to the vehicle for 10 minutes. After you wait 10 minutes you can try to start it again. This cycle can happen multiple times (at its worst I would have to go almost an hour of doing this). Once you replace the part you may have to reset the security (passlock). This is done by turning the key to start (but it won't) and then leaving it in the run position until the lock light in the dash quits blinking (about 10 minutes). You then do this again (again waiting 10 minutes) and finally a THIRD time (waiting another 10 minutes). After the third attempt you turn the key to OFF and wait 30 seconds (this waiting is important I am told!). It should then fire up. Be sure to watch this on the Web if you can as I have a lot of in-video comments to help!

For some reason, the shop replaced the crank sensor. Because is was a no start, they reason it was probably the crank sensor, and of course, it wasn't. They eventually saw the security light on, and figured out that it was a Pass-Lock system issue. They next replaced the Pass-Lock key cylinder, with no luck either. At this time, the shop decided to call me in for assistance. They simply didn't have to scan tool to access the BCM or body module for this problem. When I arrived at the shop, the tech gave me a briefing on the vehicle, and also said that the vehicle would start once in a blue moon. Ok, that was probably some kind of clue. I started my diagnostic by performing a general code analysis. I did get code P1632, or Theft Deterrent Fuel Disable Signal Received from the BCM. There were no other codes present. I knew it wasn't the key cylinder, since it was already replaced. There are steps to take in all Pass Lock diagnostics before condemning a component. In this particular GM, the signal from the ignition system is controlled by a resistor embedded in the Pass Lock module, which is part of the ignition switch cylinder. In these systems, any key that will allow the cylinder to be turned to the on position will work, the only condition that must be met is that the cylinder must be turned to a position where a magnet engages a hall effect switch, which connects the embedded resistor to the system, allowing the Body Control Module to read the signal value, on the yellow Pin A6 wire, and determine if the resistance value is correct. I analyzed the Pass Lock calibration and determined that it was correct. So, why was this car not starting? I started to suspect an electrical or connector fault. So I decided to visually inspect the Pass Lock module and wiring. Everything looked normal, so I then decided to concentrate on the BCM. As I scanned the B C M data stream for clues, I saw that all of a sudden I lost communications. Was the ECM defective? Or, was it an issue with the ...... The key didn't want to turn back into the off position. The oem lock cylinder kinda sounds like a problematic part.

GM passlock problem
2001 Impala Base 114,xxx miles. Runs & drives perfect, except.... GM replaced BCM computer 9-09. Accomplished nothing. I replaced ignition switch w/NAPA part 10-09-09. Worked great for 2 weeks. Then started having the same ole trouble. I replaced ignition key tumbler switch w/passlock sensor w/NAPA part 10-25-09. No problems until this week 1-13-10. Still doing the same exact thing it was doing before I replaced anything. Hasn't started any day this week. 10 minute wait, etc. will not work. Starts when it wants to. HELP!!! Anyone have any ideas on how to properly repair this chronic problem? ----NOTE----the problem is fixed. Cleaned the contacts on the BCM computer fuse. That's all it took. If your car is exhibiting symptoms exactly like mine did, I'd try that 1st.

Saturn Ignition Problem 2004 Ion video#3
Several hundred people have had starting problems out of 'almost' new 2000 year Saturns.. Here's mine Saturn refuses to recall the ignition switch.

General Motors PASSLOCK® anti-deterrent features in a 99 Pontiac Grand Am 2.4L
So, once again GM has done it. They invented something that failed and yet again they don't have a solution. This feature should not be added to any car, even if someone steals the car, the odds of this system to stop working are zero to none. Once WE THE OWNERS need to replace an ignition cylinder or an ECM, then the system fails for us. And the Dealership has NO CLUE how to fix it other than the helpful tip to crack the ECM open and replace the "memory chip". We all know that the memory chip is integrated and soldered on these years models. There is a reason why I love FORD! Call this number to help start a recall. 1(888)327-4236 this number is from the NHTSA.
