Winter Tyres v Summer Tyres: the Truth! - Auto Express

Fore more videos visit: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/videos/ British motorists tend to run summer tyres on their cars all year round, regardless of the weather. However, as our exclusive comparison test shows, this can be very dangerous. We headed to Sweden to compare the performance of summer tyres with winter tyres on snow and the results were quite shocking.

Winter Tyres or 4x4: which is best? - Auto Express
Subscribe to our YouTube channel http://bit.ly/11Ad1j1 Subscribe to the mag http://subscribe.autoexpress.co.uk/yt Winter tyres are going to be on a lot of minds this year - Britain could face a particularly harsh winter this year, with snow falling from as early as November. If you've got a four-wheel drive car, you probably think you're properly prepared - but are you? We went up to Tamworth Snowdome to find out if a front-wheel drive car with winter tyres has more traction in the snow than a 4x4 with summer tyres fitted. We used two Ford Kugas, both with 2.0-litre diesel engines and manual gearboxes - but one is front-wheel drive, and the other all-wheel drive. The 4x4 Ford Kuga costs £1500 more than the normal model. In snowy conditions the rubber in summer tyres gets harder and less grippy. Winter tyres use a softer compound, and a tread pattern that's designed to pick up snow - improving grip in these harsh conditions. In our first test we saw that the front-wheel drive car on summer tyres was hopeless in the snow - but when fitted with winter tyres, it obviously did much better. However we also tested the 4x4 on summer tyres - and the results might surprise you. With winter tyres, the normal Kuga went 110 metres up the slope, while the 4x4 car only made it 13 metres up, before sliding back down 9 metres. in the end, it ended up no further than the standard did with summer tyres. We also tested the four-wheel drive Ford Kuga with winter tyres - and the difference was astonishing. There was plenty of grip and the car drove all the way to the top of the steep ski slope without a problem. Obviously, the best solution for driving on snow is to have a 4x4 on winter tyres - without the right rubber, a 4x4 is just as useless as a two wheel drive car. Having four-wheel drive won't help with braking, though - and that's much more important.

Stalking hot girls in a Renault Twizy - Auto Express
Apologies for the re-upload - now in high def! We take the funky two-seat Renault Twizy electric car for a test drive around the streets of London. So far, we've only driven it on smooth tarmac in Ibiza, but now it's time for its real test -- on potholed city roads in the UK. Our test car is a top-spec Technic model, which adds 'luxuries' such as 13-inch alloys and carbon-look plastic on the roof and dash. The scissor doors are an extra £545, but are a must- have option for keeping your feet dry. Whichever way you look at it, this is a back-to-basics machine.

Lamborghini Aventador vs Ferrari FF Drag Race
It's not uncommon for us to drag race cars on a runway. But we've never done it at an active airport with passenger jets taking off and landing in the background. And so we leapt at the chance to take part in Race the Runway at Edinburgh Airport. The event, sponsored by Mercedes, was held to raise money for the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice and the Scottish Burned Children's Club. In total 25 cars, ranging from a Lamborghini Aventador to a TVR Tuscan, took part. Entrants were timed over a 1,350-metre course on one of the taxi runways. We would be driving an SLS GT, which, at 199mph, has the highest top speed of any current production Mercedes. So how did it fare against the competition? Watch the video and find out. 2013 Mazda3 vs Jeep Wrangler Snowstorm Winter Tire Mashup Test
( http://www.TFLcar.com ) The 2013 Mazda3 and the new Jeep Wrangler don't have a lot on common. In fact they are about as different as two cars can be. The Jeep Wrangler is an old school body on frame off-road behemoth while the Mazda3 is a perky small run about. So which one of these is better in the snow? We decided to find out in another fun and interesting TFLcar mashup test. To make it a fair contest we of course got a set of dedicated snow tires for the front-wheel-drive Mazda but kept the stock set of all season tires on the 4X4 Jeep. To make it even more fair we kept the jeep Wrangler in two-wheel-drive and headed to Lick Skillet Road (America's steepest country Road) in a snowstorm. So which of these two cars conquered the Colorado Mountain road? You'll have to watch this video to find out.

2 winter tyres vs 4 winter tyres
We did a test to see the difference of putting 2 winter tyres vs 4 winter tyres to a car. Find out what happens when you drive on ice in Sweden.Tyre advice between 2 winter tires or 4 winter tires from Rebecca Jackson. Renowned race car driver Rebecca Jackson did a few tests in the icy and snowy surfaces of norther Sweden with the purpose of finding out if two snow tires have enough traction as oppose to four snow tires. Snow or winter tires use more sipes and have a unique rubber compound, this helps increase the traction in the snow and ice. Snow tyres reduce grip in a dry and wet road. Snow tires manufacturers design their tires for tough winter weather usually between temperatures below 7 °C or 45 °F. In different parts of the world winter tyres have metal studs (studded tires) to have better grip in particular types of ice and snow. Snow tyres help skidding.

Studding Your Own Tires--Bad Idea?
Uncertain of the age of the tires on my motorhome, I replaced them with new. The old ones still had a lot of good tread left, a fairly aggressive tread with lots of sipes, so I decided to put studs in them and make them my winter tires for my Bronco. I got a full two seasons out of them, and then this year one of them started to fail. So it was back to my Buckshot Raidal Mudders for the winter. Since I still had lots of studs left over, I decided to add some studs to the center lugs of the Buckshots. But that was before I realized that it may have been the studs that caused the damage to the old motorhome tire(s).

What You Need to Know About Winter Tires

Winter tyre test UK, Real world test of winter tires
A side by side comparison in real world conditions of winter tyres and summer tyres on rear and front wheel drive cars. Test conducted in December 2010 in Wales on untreated private road. Conclusions are that any winter tyres is better than no winter tyre, new winters are much better than worn ones, and a rear wheel drive car with good winters on is just as good as a front wheel drive one in the real world.
