Mazda RX7 13b rotary engine compression test
This is a quick compression test of a rebuildable core. Rotary engines are
a lot like two strokes. They will not start below 75 psi compression, this
one seemingly has normal 100 plus psi. compression with no liquid in the
chambers. This particular engine is rated at 137 hp. and roughly 100ft lbs.
torque. Pretty amazing power output for such a small package. I personally
would take this engine apart and rebuild it as it has roughly 80K miles on
it. It ran fine but smoked on startup. A few people have commented that I
should take the out the schrader check valve out of the compression tester
for a more accurate reading. I may just do that and put up a new video.

RX-7 Compression Test
This is a compression test I performed on my RX-7 TII with 86,000 miles on
it. The compression tool used was made by Actron, which I purchased from
My engine passed the compression test with flying colors! The Mazda Factory
Service Manual states that the reading on front and rear chambers should be
above 85 psi. Lower than that is in need of a rebuild.
90+ psi is good enough to run the engine reliably
95+ psi is very good
100+ psi is excellent

Compression Testing and What You Can Learn From It - EricTheCarGuy
Here is a video on performing a compression test on an engine to assess
it's mechanical condition. An engines ability to compress air and fuel is
directly proportional to it's performance since an engine is nothing more
than an air compressor once you take away all the controls. A compression
test is a good general test that will give you an idea of the engine's
overall health but it does not give specific information on what the
problem is should there be one, for that a "leak down test" would be
required, here is a link to that video.
However if you find yourself looking for the source of a performance
problem with an engine, this is a great place to start. This test is often
overlooked in favor of looking at the fuel or ignition system, I think
that's a mistake, if an engine can't perform mechanically no amount of
electronics will make that better.
