Buick - History Documentary (1995)
This video is a wonderfully-done documentary, written and produced by Michael Rose, on the history of Buick as presented in 1995 from the History Channel's archive. Here is Michael's description of the video verbatim: "No one would have believed that the tinkering of a plumber would turn into the foundation of the world's largest corporation. But it did. David Dunbar Buick invented a process to adhere porcelain to tubs and other bathroom fixtures. But the Scottish immigrant dreamed of making a mark out of the bathroom, and set to work building a car. By 1900, he enlisted the aid of another inventor, Walter Marr, and they built their first vehicle. Their invention attracted the attention of one of Michigan's wealthiest men, William Crapo Durant, the president of the world's largest buggy-building business. As soon as he drove one of Buick's early creations, Durant realized that the days of the horse and buggy were over. He teamed up with Buick, and the two went on to make history. By the thirties, Buicks were regarded as some of the finest cars ever made. From the first Buicks through the birth of General Motors and into history, this is the compelling story of the partnership that eventually became the basis for the largest company in the world."

It's not drop dead gorgeous like a 1959 Impala, nor does it have the panache of say a 1956 Chrysler 300. You see the '55 Buick Special was a working mans car. It had room enough for the whole family, a decent power-plant thanks to its 264 cubic inch V8, and style that was, well... above average. Harry Fisher or "Uncle Harry" as most people know him, saw the old Buick a bit differently though. He knew that with a few little touches (like a 502 cubic inch big-block, modern suspension, and a new set of wheels) that this old Buick had the potential to become one of the baddest hot-rods around.

BODYWORK/TRIM This Grand National's wet-looking coat of GM code 19U Black highlights original sheetmetal that's both crisp and sharp. The car's vertical panels center straight surfaces in even gaps, showing no signs of damage or accident repairs. And, topped by great looking, factory-correct trim, the finish on those panels is every bit as glossy as it is deep. ENGINE The professionally built sixer behind this coupe's Vader-like grille is founded on a new block that was magnafluxed, sonic-tested, squared, honed, bored .020 and fitted with CNC-ported Champion Racing heads. Inside that block, A SCAT stroker crank combines with billet, hand-machined rods, machined and coated Ross Racing pistons and a Comp hydraulic roller cam to provide smooth inertia. Combustion is created when 8mm AC Delco Premium Silicone wires bump Morel roller rockers, Morel pushrods and Morel lifters. A steady amalgamation of oxygen and fossils is provided by a K&N air filter, a 70mm Accufab throttle body, a ported and matched intake, Alkycontrol Methanol Injection and 60# fuel injectors. And coated headers, a PTE high-flow Intercooler, fabricated air tubes and a TA Performance oil pump keep everything lucid and cool. All those carefully calculated improvements are, with the help of a turboTweak chip, good for a universally impressive 550 Dyno-proven rear wheel horsepower. And items like ARP bolts, ARP studs, Cometic gaskets, coated engine bearings and a Cloyes roller timing set ensure everything works in unison to provide invigorating and equally terrifying acceleration. DRIVETRAIN Behind that raucous engine, a custom-programmed Four C's automatic transmission makes good use of a SCAT flywheel, a 3,500 RPM non-lockup stall and 200R4 billet internals. That gearbox twists torque through a billet yoke, a heavy duty driveshaft, heavy duty U-joints and a proven Currie 9-inch, which is fitted with beefy, 3.53 gears. Factory power steering rides between QA1 Street Control Arms and adjustable QA1 coil-over-shocks. Out back, adjustable QA1 trailing arms compress two more QA1 coil-over-shocks. Power-assisted stops are provided by a combination of big Wilwood calipers, drilled and slotted rotors and 11-inch GM drums. Charred dinosaurs float in to rowdy Pypes Race Pro mufflers. And power meets pavement through Budnik X-Series Grand National wheels, which spin 225/45ZR17 BF Goodrich g-Force Super Sports in front of 275/40R17 Mickey Thompson ET Street Radials. So what could be a better car for a heist than a sinister black Buick Grand National GNX? And that's just what Dominic Torreto (Vin Diesel) drives at the beginning of Fast & Furious as he robs a land train full of high-octane fuel. No one in the picture car department remembers exactly how the GNX won its role, except that it seemed such a natural choice that no one gave it a second thought. Considering the intense stunts performed during the filming of this opening sequence, it's probably not surprising that a lot of Buick Grand Nationals (but no actual GNXs) were sacrificed in its creation. In fact, the picture car department created seven of them, all based on real GNs or T-Types. Four would wind up scrapped. The most unusual of the seven GNs built was one with the body mounted backward on the frame so it could be driven at speed while appearing to be going backward. To get the engine tucked under the trunk lid, however, the turbocharger and its plumbing had to be removed. Most of the other GNs retained their original turbo V6s, though a couple had Chevy crate V8s installed. It's amazing it took this long for someone to give the Grand National the starring role it deserved.
