Moltissimi esemplari della Clio Williams sono stati impiegati nelle competizioni, nei rally soprattutto.
La Renault Clio ha avuto molto successo nelle competizioni automobilistiche.Appena immesso sul mercato il modello celebrativo "Williams" con motorizzazione 2000 16v, la 1800 16v è stata accantonata. L'omologazione della "Williams" è scaduta a fine 2007 e pertanto dal 1 gennaio 2008 è entrata a far parte delle vetture "Fuori Omologazione", mantenendo la sua configurazione originale. In questo modo le ex Gruppo A entrano nel gruppo FA 7.
In 1992, Renault launched the Clio Williams with a limited run of 500, for racing homologation purposes. The car was named after the then Renault-powered Formula One team WilliamsF1, though Williams had nothing to do with the design or engineering of this Clio. The modifications to the Clio 16S on which it was based were the work of Renault Sport, Renault's motorsport division.
The 2.0 L 16-valve straight-4 engine rated at 150 PS (110 kW) and a top speed of 215 km/h (134 mph), with performance-tuned ride and handling. Renault later released the Williams 2 and Williams 3 special editions, much to the chagrin of those owners who had been assured of the exclusivity of the "original" Williams. One common mistake people can make is thinking that the 2.0 16V (F7R) used in the Williams is simply a bored out 1.8 16V (F7P), whereas, in reality the large engine had different size valves, cams, stroked crank and engine oil cooler. Other differences between the Williams and the Clio 16S it is based on include a wider front track with some parts borrowed from the Renault 19. wider speedline alloys, uprated (JC5) gearbox, bespoke four-to-one manifold, firmer suspension, and some cosmetic differences on the exterior and interior.
Respected motoring journalists consistently rate the Williams as one of the very best hot hatches ever made, regardless of era. One of its many accolades was 6th place in Evo's Car Of The Decade feature in 2004.
La Clio Williams est née en 1993 afin servir de base à lhomologation rallye et pour célébrer les succès de Renault en formule 1. Pour cette homologation, il fallait que Renault produise la Clio avec un moteur de 2 litres de cylindrée. Au départ 5000 exemplaires numérotés verront le jour, puis grâce à son succès tant sportif que commercial ce seront en tout environ 12 100 véhicules qui seront produit déclinés en deux phases ou en série limitée "Swiss Champion". Considérée par beaucoup comme la dernière véritable GTI, cette bombinette pour son comportement et le plaisir quelle procure suscite encore aujourdhui la convoitise de nombreux passionnés.

Diese Variante wurde nur etwa 30.000 mal produziert. Eine exklusive Version davon gab es zu Ehren des Formel-1-Teamchefs Frank Williams: den Clio 1 Williams, der sich heute noch größter Beliebtheit erfreut. Dieses auf 5.000 Stück limitierte Sondermodell war mit einem 16V-Motor 2,0 l Hubraum und 147 PS ausgestattet. Des weiteren gab es 1995 ein Sondermodell namens „Swiss Champion", gewissermaßen eine zweite Edition der ersten Phase des Williams-Modells. Nur 500 Exemplare wurden fabriziert. Das Modell wurde von Renault gebaut, da Nigel Mansell zum ersten Mal Formel-1-Weltmeister mit Williams-Renault geworden war
