1969 Roadrunner Show Car
1969 Plymouth Roadrunner If you have paid any attention to Barrett Jackson, Mecum and the other nationally acclaimed auctions you have probably noticed that you can't go wrong with a mopar. These cars are EXTREMELY popular and continue to just become more rare as time goes on. Of them the Plymouth Roadrunner is a body style that never fails to draw a crowd. The 1969 Roadrunner you see here delivers that classic muscle car look of the 60s but is fully loaded with all the best components you can find. The "official" restoration was done between 2000 and 2003 but the car is continually worked on, updated and upgraded. The body is very straight and topped with some of the nicest pearl Burgundy paint you have ever seen. It was a custom blend of House of Kolor Candy Apple Wild Cherry with Red Ice and Pearl which all works together to create one of the deepest paint jobs around. The hood is painted Gloss Black with White Ice and pearl and was just as cleanly done as the rest. Everything was clear coated 4 times for the perfect finish! That combined with the perfect chrome gives you a car that never stops shining! All of the stainless trim is mounted cleanly and shines just as well. The glass is all good and has a nice dark tint that just adds to the tough look of this classic. On the passenger side and driver side window you will find custom Roadrunner graphics that were very nicely etched into the glass. It has a great stance with the slight rake that looks perfect. It rides around on polished Cragar SS wheels with fresh tires. The beauty of this classic doesn't stop with the exterior so pull off the hood and check out the very nicely done 440 CI motor. If the paint and body don't grab their attention the engine sure will. It was all professionally built and was bored .30 over and honed for Jegs Plasma Molly Rings. It also utilizes Jegs forged speed Pro pistons and rods. Other high performance components include the Crower solid lifters, roller rockers, and full race cam. The heads have a 5 angle valve job and were ported, polished, and matched prior to being installed. They are a 67 close chambered to run unleaded gasoline. Topping it all off is a very clean Edelbrock finned air cleaner which sits atop the dual Edelbrock Performer series 600 AFB. Under these you will find the Edelbrock mini high rise intake manifold. Other important features under the hood include a Holley "red" electric fuel pump, MSD 6 series electronic ignition, MSD distributor, MSD high performance blaster 2 coil, all Cool Flex hoses, and Optima gel battery. The car has the sound to match the looks which is provided by the Doug Thorley headers and 3" X tube dual Exhaust into dual Flowmaster single chamber mufflers. To handle the power a beefed up 727 automatic transmission with 3500 RPM TCI torque converter is in place. The suspension system utilizes high jacker air shocks with leaf springs and chrome traction bars in rear. The interior of the car was all custom finished out but utilizes the original style dash. It along with the doors were painted using the same gloss Black as the hood. The dual high back bucket seats are nicely covered in Black and have custom embroidered Roadrunners on the headrests. In between these is a fully custom center console to house the B&M mega ratchet style shifter and extra gauges/switches. An after market AM/FM/CD player has been added which provides a great sound. The polished Grant steering wheel is nicely mounted to the column and uses an after market power steering system. Other very cool custom features include the hood scoop LED lights and added PA system for the Roadrunner at car shows. Great Depression, 1940s and 1950s While the original purpose of the Plymouth was to serve a lower-end marketing niche, during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the marque helped significantly in ensuring the survival of the Chrysler Corporation in a decade when many other car companies failed. Beginning in 1930, Plymouths were sold by all three Chrysler divisions (Chrysler, DeSoto, and Dodge). Plymouth sales were a bright spot during this dismal automotive period, and by 1931 Plymouth rose to the number three spot among all cars. In 1931 with the Model PA, the company introduced floating power and boasted, "The economy of a four; the smoothness of a six." In 1933 Chrysler decided to catch up with Ford and Chevrolet with respect to engine cylinder count. The 190 cu in version of Chrysler's flathead-6 engine was equipped with a downdraft carburetor and installed in the new 1933 Plymouth PC, introduced on 17 November 1932. However, Chrysler had reduced the PC's wheelbase from 112 in (284.5 cm) to 107 in (271.8 cm), and the car sold poorly. By April 1933, the Dodge division's Model DP chassis, with a 112 in (284.5 cm) wheelbase, was put under the PC body with DP front fenders, hood, and radiator shell. The model designation was advanced to PD and the car was marketed as the "DeLuxe" 1933 Plymouth. This car sold very well and is the 1933 model most commonly found in collections. The PC became the 'Standard Six'. It had been the 'Plymouth Six' at introduction, and was sold through to the end of 1933, but in much lower numbers. It is consequently in the minority in collectors' hands today. In 1937, Plymouth (along with the other Chrysler makes) added safety features such as flat dash boards with recessed controls and the back of the front seat padded for the rear seat occupants. The PC was shipped overseas to Sweden, Denmark, and the UK, as well as Australia. In the UK it was sold as a 'Chrysler Kew', Kew Gardens being the location of the Chrysler factory outside London. The flathead 6 which started with the 1933 Model PC stayed in the Plymouth until the 1959 models. In 1939 Plymouth produced 417,528 vehicles, of which 5,967 were two-door convertible coupes with rumble seats. The 1939 convertible coupe was prominently featured at Chrysler's exhibit at the 1939 New York World's Fair, advertised as the first mass-production convertible with a power folding top. It featured a 201 cu in, 82 hp version of the flathead six engine. For much of its life, Plymouth was one of the top-selling American automobile brands; it together with Chevrolet and Ford were commonly referred to as the "low-priced three" marques in the American market...
