A show car version of the new Cruze hatchback will be Chevrolet's star attraction at this year's edition of the Paris motorshow, which kicks off on September 30. Even though GM uses the term 'show car', the five-door hatchback version of the Cruze is virtually production ready minus some show-floor bling such as the blue hue on the headlamps, big wheels and the LED daytime running lights.
While keeping the front end and taut body lines of the sedan model, the refreshingly stylish hatch comes with a sweeping coupe-like roofline and a unique rear end treatment. GM has not yet issued any photos of the cabin, but don't expect any changes over the four-door saloon.
According to the automaker, cargo capacity for the Cruze hatchback is close to 400 liters and will feature 60/40 split rear seating.
The available engine range will most likely be identical to the sedan that is currently offered in Europe with two petrol engines, a 113HP 1.6-liter and a 141HP 1.8-liter, plus a 123HP 2.0-liter turbo diesel.
The new Cruze 5-door hatchback will go on sale across Europe mid 2011 with prices announced nearer the launch date. More markets will get the car shortly after, though GM has not said if North America will be one of them.
Wayne Brannon, president and managing director of Chevrolet Europe, beleives the addition of a hatchback version to the range will further bolster the car's sales.
"Hatchbacks play a critical role in many markets," said Brannon. "The total compact segment in Europe represents around 4.8 million units which is over a quarter of the total market, with hatchbacks representing around 65% of that volume. We therefore expect to see increased business in a number of regions, while sending out a signal that Chevrolet is now a serious mainstream player in Europe."
The Cruze hatch is one of four world Chevrolet premieres at the Paris show and will join the new Orlando MPV, Captiva SUV facelift and the new Aveo.

Since its launch in the UK in 2008, the Chevrolet Cruze has represented a
budget alternative to mainstream family cars. In 2011, the four-door saloon
was joined by this more practical hatchback model, and with its combination
of spacious and verstaile cabin, decent-sized boot and a punchy and
efficient diesel engine, the Cruze is more appealing than ever.
It has a load area of 413 litres with the seats in place, which expands to
883 litres with them folded flat. The distinctive dashboard is said to take
cues from the firm's Corvette sports car and all models are generously
2012 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback
Geneva world premiere for Cruze hatchback
New model to build on global success of Chevrolet's favorite car
Cruze hatchback cements Chevrolet's mainstream credentials in Europe
One of seven new entries in centenary year
Zurich. Chevrolet's award-winning - and now World Touring Car Championship
(WTCC)-winning - Cruze will further enhance its credentials this year when
the new hatchback version goes on sale in spring. The full production model
makes its world premiere at the 81st international Geneva Motor Show, March
3 - 11.
The timing of the new model couldn't be better for Chevrolet, with the
manufacturer being crowned World Touring Car Champions in December for the
first time. Chevrolet's racing success proves the dynamic potential and
qualities of the Cruze, while the launch of a new 5-door hatchback model in
addition to the sedan, is further evidence of Chevrolet's intention to
bring value for money to the mainstream segments of the European market.
A show car version of Chevrolet's compact contender was shown at the Paris
Motor Show last September, and was warmly received.
Sales of the Cruze last year surpassed the Aveo to become Chevrolet's top
selling passenger car nameplate globally. Since its launch in the spring
2009, the Cruze sedan has been warmly welcomed by markets all over the
world, greeted as a step change for the brand with customers attracted to
its coupe style, build quality, 5-star NCAP rating and driving dynamics. It
was also elected the AUTOBEST car of 2010 by a jury of leading auto writers
in Central and Eastern Europe.
The introduction of the new Cruze hatchback is critical in Europe, as Wayne
Brannon, president and managing director of Chevrolet Europe explains.
"Hatchbacks play a critical role in many markets. The total compact segment
in Europe represents over a quarter of the total market, with hatchbacks
representing around 65% of that volume.
"The new Cruze hatchback cements that Chevrolet's claim for a place among
the mainstream brands in Europe, and it's a vehicle that will bring new
levels of value against some of the more established competition."

The new 2012 Chevrolet Sonic (Hatchback and Sedan)
Comes with hatchback and sedan.
The Chevrolet Aveo is known as one of the least-expensive and least-liked
subcompact cars you can buy. Now that Chevrolet has announced the Aveo's
replacement, the little econobox will just become a bad memory. Meet the
2012 Chevrolet Sonic.
"The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is the small car GM has been saying it will build
for decades," says Inside Line. "This time, however, the Sonic has been
given a stylish look along with a generous helping of the company's latest
technology. Penalty box? No, just a smaller version of the company's best
sedans. At least that's how Chevrolet is pitching it."
Still riding the wave of praise for the Chevrolet Cruze, an affordable
small car that reviewers like for its upscale feel and comfortable cabin,
Chevy is banking on the Sonic to extend the goodwill into the company's
newest super-small car offering. AutoWeek reports, "The Sonic will come in
two variants: a sedan that resembles a slimmed-down Cruze and a diminutive
hatch. Two Ecotec engines will be available, including a 1.4-liter
four-cylinder turbo pushing out 138 hp
and 148 lb-ft of torque that can be paired with a six-speed manual gearbox.
The standard engine will be a 1.8-liter four-cylinder making 135 hp and 123
lb-ft of torque; it will be offered with a five-speed manual or a six-speed
Autoblog says that, with the Sonic, "it's clear that The General had its
sights locked on the Fiesta from the get go. The Sonic hatchback packs more
back seat room than its Blue Oval competitor and, with the rear bench
folded flat, delivers more cargo room, as well."
While the press hasn't gotten a full look at the sonic, which debuts later
today at the Detroit auto show, the early reviewers are positive. "Chevy
has built a subcompact car that's appealing for reasons other than price or
gas mileage," says Kicking Tires. With the Ford Fiesta already tearing up
the affordable small car rankings, and an all-new 2012 Honda Civic set to
bow later this year, the Sonic could have its work cut out for it. But,
all the competition is only good news for small car shoppers, who suddenly
have plenty of strong options to chose from.

► 2012 Chevrolet Sonic Sedan (Aveo)
At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, MI in 2011,
General Motors is introducing the 2012 Buick Verano, the GMC Sierra All
