eXplosion Dragraces Drachten 2011 Compilation (Part 1) [720p HD] Een nieuw Pro Modified baanrecord voor Adam Flamholc, runs onder de vier seconden voor Lex Joon en Danny Bellio, snelle tijden voor David Vegter en het brute geweld van de Nitro Funny Car van Gordon Smith. Met AutoMotoShow 2/de MPM Internationals kon Nederland eindelijk weer eens genieten van de grote pk-monsters uit de belangrijkste klassen van de Europese dragrace-sport. De voorspelde regen viel overdag gelukkig mee maar gaf de organisatie wel meer hoofdbrekens dan ze lief was. Tekst: Remco Scheelings Foto's: Remco Scheelings De hardwerkende eXplosion-crew zorgde ervoor dat de baan iedere dag op tijd droog en in optimale conditie was waardoor er toch veel runs gemaakt konden worden en er voor het publiek genoeg spektakel te zien was. Grootste probleem was echter de regen van zaterdagavond en -nacht die het pitsterrein in een modderpoel veranderde. Omdat het daardoor voor diverse autorijders onmogelijk was om de start te bereiken werd besloten de eliminaties niet te laten meetellen voor het Open Nederlands kampioenschap. Bij de auto's leverde daarmee alleen de kwalificatie punten op. De motoren hadden minder moeite om de strip te bereiken en dus waren daar tijdens de eliminaties wel punten te verdienen. Dat zeker de eerste (geprepareerde) 150 meter van Dragstrip Drachten de concurrentie met buitenlandse banen meer dan aankan bewezen de diverse Europese rijders. Zonder uitzondering waren ze dan ook vol lof over de enige en niet eens permanente dragstrip van ons land. Met zijn MPM Top Fueler zette Lex Joon op zaterdag over de 1/8 mijl een tijd van 3,898 seconden op de klokken. Veel indrukwekkender was echter zijn 60-voettijd (18 meter) van 0,83 seconden, sneller dan de Nederlander waar dan ook in Europa of Amerika ooit gereden had. Ondanks dat Joon na circa één seconde (!) al van het gas ging passeerde zijn dragster de finishlijn bij 201 meter na 3,89 seconden met een snelheid van 203 km/u! De prikkelende nitro-dampen, het geluid van bijna 8.000 ongedempte pk's en de onder zoveel vermogen trillende grond brachten het publiek op de banken. In Drachten kon ook voor het eerst worden genoten van het geweld van een Nitro Funny Car. Naar hij later ook zelf toegaf onderschatte Gordon Smith de kwaliteit van de baan en bleef steken bij een tijd van 4,10 seconden en 224 km/u, maar de sensatie van het brute nitro geweld was er voor het publiek niet minder om. The sights, smells and sounds of a Nitro Methane burning monster Top Fuel Hemi engine. An exprience one doesn't soon forget. An experience that can't properly be captured on a video. A sensation that'll leave you in awe and always coming back for more! *Old Info 2006* Drag racing is one of the most popular forms of motor sport in this country. Hopped-up Hemis and blown big blocks shred tires and thunder down the 1320 in no time flat. But even the quickest modified street cars pale in comparison to the awesome power of Top Fuel Dragsters & Funny Cars. In fact, the forces at work inside these cars are almost unimaginable. Here are some specifics that really put top fuel power and acceleration into perspective. One Top Fuel dragster 500 cubic inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower than the first 4 rows at the Daytona 500. Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1½ gallons of nitromethane per second; a fully loaded 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate with 25% less energy being produced. A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to drive the dragster Supercharger. With 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the Supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a near solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock at full throttle. At the stoichiometric 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture for nitromethane the flame front temperature measures 7050 degrees F. Nitromethane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing Exhaust gases. Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder. Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After 1/2 way, the engine is dieseling from compression plus the glow of Exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow. If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half. In order to exceed 300 mph in 4.5 seconds dragsters must accelerate at an average of over 4G's. In order to reach 200 mph well before half-track, the launch acceleration approaches 8G's. * Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have completed reading this sentence. Top Fuel Engines turn approximately 540 revolutions from light to light! Including the burnout the engine must only survive 900 revolutions under load. The redline is actually quite high at 9500 rpm. The Bottom Line; Assuming all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs an estimated US $1,000.00 per second. Putting all of this into perspective: You are driving the average $140,000 Lingenfelter "twin-turbo" powered Corvette Z06. Over a mile up the road, a Top Fuel dragster is staged and ready to launch down a quarter mile strip as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the 'Vette hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line and past the dragster at an honest 200 mph.The 'tree' goes green for both of you at that moment. The dragster launches and starts after you. You keep your foot down hard, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums and within 3 seconds the dragster catches and passes you. He beats you to the finish line, a quarter mile away from where you just passed him. Think about it; from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 mph and not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he passed you within a mere 1320 foot long race course. That, folks is acceleration!

In front of over 7000 Melbourne race fans, the ANDRA Drag Racing Series marked its return after 12 years away from Australia's sporting capital with thrilling action across three ANDRA pro categories. Morgan defeated event debutante John Lamattina in a close fought final with Morgan's 4.322 narrowly defeating a 4.556 from Lamattina. Morgan paid credit to his crew for their efforts not just at Fuchs Nitro Thunder presented by Crow Cams but across the whole season. "This crew has been amazing not just today but every time they go to work on this car," he said. "(Crew chief) Ben Patterson took a bit of a stab at the tune up today after we had an ignition shut off on one run and then a seized fuel pump in a warm up and sure enough it went down there -- he got it right and to do that twice in one day is full credit to him. "In the run before the final I was on the hand brake trying to keep traction so Ben calmed it down for the final and it sailed on through." Morgan defeated chief championship rival Phil Lamattina in the first elimination round and with 74 points now separating the pair, qualifying fifth or better at the Australian Nationals at Sydney Dragway in two weeks would mean Morgan wraps up his fourth Top Fuel title. "Championship wise it is what it is, we take the punches as we swing them," he said.
