Cougars at Barrett-Jackson 2013: Featuring KTL's 1970 SCJ Eliminator
We went back to Scottsdale this January to witness the sale of Joe Valenti's 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator, with a 428 Super Cobra Jet drivetrain and the Drag Pak option. This rare car was meticulously concours restored over the course of 5 years by the renowned Cougar restoration shop KTL Restorations ( http://www.ktlrestorations.com ) in VA. A factor that made this auction even more interesting was the presence of another 1970 Eliminator, in the same Competition Blue color, and also with a 428 Cobra Jet engine (not Super) and also restored by a reputable hot rod shop. This car was not restored to the same "concours" level that Joe's car was, but it was still beautifully restored, and we expected to see it bring close to six figures. What we saw unfold that weekend in January was an interesting and sobering experience. These two cars, which would seem nearly identical to the untrained bystander, sold for vastly different prices. There is a lot to be said for the day and time that a car gets sold, as well as the quality of the restoration. But we were still very surprised by the results. Mercury Cougar - American Muscle Car
An excellent TV show featuring the classic Mercury Cougar. They cover all the classic years, and talk about all the different engines and option packages you could get. Only a couple minor mistakes (they say the that XR-7 package included a 4-speed stick, then show an automatic shifter in one... derrr) but overall a very nice overview of these cars.

1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator -Barrett Jackson-OC Fair Grounds Part 1
https://www.youtube.com/Mustangconnection1 Barrett Jackson 2010 Oragne County Fantasy Bid Car 1969 Mercury Cougar Fully restored Part 1. 1969 Mercury XR7 updated with Eliminator package. The car was delivered new in Southern California with the following options, XR7 package, 351W, high back bucket seats, console, power steering, power disc brakes, air conditioning, tinted glass, FMX automatic transmission and 9" rear end. The car has just undergone an extensive 2 restoration. The car retains all of its original sheet metal and has been refinished with a base coat clear coat Ford black with custom red Eliminator stripes. To complete the cosmetic Eliminator look, the car has front and rear spoilers, blacked out front and rear grill, an original Eliminator hood scoop and correct style hood pins. All chrome, trim and weatherstripping redone. The entire original drivetrain was pulled during the exterior restoration. The 351W now sports some mild modifications, the FMX has a shift kit and the 9" differential is now a 3.50 trac lok. Fully detailed engine bay. The following were all removed for complete rebuild, refurbishment or replacement. Complete air conditioning, heat, cooling, braking system, electrical and vacuum system, gas tank, all soft and hard lines. All chrome and moldings, front windshield were all redone. Interior removed during paint, new headliner, carpet and seat covers. All parts repainted or re-dyed or replaced as needed. Full Alpine sound system installed to look as factory as possible. The suspension was completely rebuilt. The car sits in a lowered stance that makes the car handle and ride very well. Custom fitted Raceline 17" wheels. To retain a factory style look, the center caps were custom machined to fit magnum 500 Cougar center caps in red to match the red Eliminator stripes.
