Special thanks to Infiniti of Ann Arbor
2015 Infiniti Q70L
3.7L V6, 330 hp, 270 lb-ft
18mpg city/ 24mpg highway
Previously known as the Infiniti M, the Q70 now comes in long wheelbase
form. While it has not been significantly updated, subtle changes to the
exterior keep it fresh. The Q70 still comes with either a 3.7L V6 with
330hp and 270lbft of torque or a 5.6L V8 producing 420 hp and 417 lb-ft of
torque. There is now a hybrid model with a combined 360 hp that is not
available for the LWB model.
The only transmission option is a 7 speed automatic that sends power to the
rear wheels or an optional all wheel drive system. 0-60 happens in a little
less than 6 seconds and fuel economy is 18 mpg city and 24 highway. An
interesting fact about the transmission is the Adaptive shift control,
which has a learning algorithm that senses driving style and adjusts
shifting style accordingly.
The nearly six inch stretch to this car is immediately noticeable when you
sit in the rear seats. legroom is excellent, but there are no extensive
options for rear passengers. You do get heated seats but they will not
recline, there's no massaging and no entertainment system. It cannot match
the features found in the full-sized S-Class or A8 but then again this
sedan is in a price segment with cars like the E-class and 5 Series.
Regardless, the lengthening of this vehicle is huge benefit to rear seat
passengers, I can comfortably stay back here for hours without any
The interior of this vehicle is similar to the rest of infiniti's lineup,
you get great leather covering all the contact surfaces, a nice 10 speaker
Bose audio system with an optional fancier surround sound system available,
heated and cooled front seats and a whole host of safety tech. Some
particularly interesting and useful features are radar-guided cruise
control, lane-keeping assist, backup traffic sensing and the 360 degree
The design is not earth shatteringly unique, it is functional and visually
appealing. The true excellence lies in the quality of materials and small
details. The wavy design on the door and seats is cool, great looking wood
trim, and other tasteful touches such as the analog clock set into the
Handling is decent for a long wheelbase variant, even though there is a
significant increase in length, the Q70L only gains about 100 lbs. Not as
dynamic to drive as smaller sports sedans, the Q70L does have a good ride
quality, and increased sound deadening and active noise cancellation lead
to good noise isolation.
For those seeking more performance you can chose the big naturally
aspirated V8 and available sports package which adds larger wheels, four
wheel steering and more powerful brakes.
Most of the time when you think about a long wheel base vehicle, you assume
that the driving dynamics will be ruined and it will be way too heavy. in
this case the Q70L doesn't feel horrible. Also you get the benefits of the
stretched rear section, but not the crazy price tag associated with the
high end German limousines
If you are looking for an upscale sedan that is capable of bringing
technology and luxury, the Infiniti Q70 is a good choice, especially when
considered in long wheelbase form. Nothing else in this price bracket will
offer the amount of room that this sedan has. The refreshed appearance is
eye catching, it has a great interior, good performance and competitive
pricing, its something that I would not object to driving or being driven
in on a daily basis. Thanks to Infiniti of Ann Arbor for making this review
