Lexus is evidently dead serious about removing some of the starch from its collar, as evidenced by the boldly styled new IS sedan just unveiled here at the Detroit Auto Show. We didn't know what to make of Lexus' entry-level sport sedan when we first saw images of it earlier this week. Dominated by the gaping maw of a spindle grille and flanked by headlamps with Nike swoosh daytime running lamps, the photos showed a distinctive (if not completely cohesive) design. Having now seen the design in the metal, we have to admit it comes together better than it does on screen. The new model will feature both rear- and all-wheel drive models in both 2.5-liter V6 (IS250) and 3.5-liter V6 (IS350) trims. Lexus also showed an IS300h hybrid model at the reveal, but it is earmarked for Lexus' home market of Japan, along with Europe and other markets. No word yet on why the model probably won't be sold here in North America, but our AutoblogGreen compatriots are looking into it. Aside from its bold new look front and rear, the IS carries forward a lot of the ideas seen in other newer Lexus models, namely the GS. Hidden beneath the IS' sheetmetal is the multilink rear suspension from the GS, along with its electric power steering setup. The new IS rides atop a three-inch longer wheelbase for better rear seat room, but during our brief time sitting in the car at the press conference melee, it still didn't feel terribly roomy (it rarely does in this class). At least the seatbacks fold 60/40 for the first time for additional utility. Executives promise that the Fuji Speedway- and Nürburgring-tuned IS350 will make in excess of 300 horsepower. More detailed specifications have yet to be released, but performance figures to be formidable, especially now that the IS receives the eight-speed automatic borrowed from the existing IS F, complete with full torque converter lockup for crisp shifts and manual mode throttle blipping. In addition, F Sport models like the white showcar above includes recalibrated suspension and electric power steering settings to go along with their more aggressive visuals and interior trimmings. The IS is scheduled to hit dealers in June, at which point you can all make up your minds about Lexus' new styling direction.

Dopo i primi scatti ufficiali, la Lexus ha diffuso una nuova galleria fotografica della nuova berlina IS, appena presentata al Salone di Detroit. In questa occasione sono state rese note anche le informazioni dettagliate per il mercato americano, dove la vettura verrà proposta nelle versioni IS 250 (con un V6 da 2.5 litri), IS 350 (3.5 V6) e IS 300h (2.5 quattro cilindri ibrida), con trazione posteriore o integrale e nell'inedito allestimento F Sport. Guarda la galleria fotografica della nuova Lexus IS Solo ibrida in Italia. Per il mercato italiano sarà disponibile la sola IS 300h, anche in versione F Sport. Capace di stupire con il suo design profondamente rinnovato, la nuova IS utilizza un telaio irrigidito con passo allungato, sospensioni posteriori multi-link derivate dalla sorella maggiore GS, con molla separata per non rubare spazio al vano bagagli e impianto sterzante derivato anch'esso dalla GS. Il funzionamento del Drive Mode Select. Per esaltare il carattere su strada, la IS offrirà inoltre il Drive Mode Select, per scegliere tra le modalità di guida Eco, Normal, Sport e Sport + (quest'ultima solo sulla IS 350) e accordare il funzionamento dei vari dispositivi elettronici di bordo allo stile di guida. Il solo modello IS 350 potrà inoltre contare sulla trasmissione automatica a otto marce Sport Direct Shift derivata dalla precedente IS F. Tutti i modelli utilizzeranno il dispositivo G-Force Artificial Intelligence, che nella modalità Sport valuta continuamente le accelerazioni e decelerazioni per fornire i settaggi adeguati del cambio automatico, impendendo anche i passaggi di marcia in curva. Caratterizzazione aggressiva per le F Sport. L'allestimento F Sport offrirà ulteriori personalizzazioni di carattere estetico per carrozzeria e interni, ma anche e soprattutto un assetto sportivo, una taratura specifica del servosterzo elettrico con Variable Gear Ratio Steering e un software specifico per gli ammortizzatori a controllo elettronico. I cerchi da 18" di questo allestimento sono ispirati a quelli della coupé LFA, dalla quale deriva anche la strumentazione digitale con anello centrale e il design del volante. In base agli allestimenti sarà disponibile anche il nuovo impianto multimediale con touch screen, con informazioni in tempo reale sul meteo e sul traffico. Tutti i modelli saranno dotati di dieci airbag, mentre a richiesta verranno offerti dispositivi di sicurezza come Automatic High Beam, Lane Departure Alert, Blind Spot Monitor e Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
