How to Rebuild a Turbo - Part 1 of 2
Rebuilding a td05h 16g turbo. This process can be applied to many journal bearing turbochargers. :) It definitely comes in handy to know how to do this when you are in this type of hobby. 4/25/12: Small explanation on the balancing of the rotating assembly since I get so many comments regarding it. This particular turbocharger, td05h, has its rotating assembly components balanced separately. This means each individual part (compressor wheel, turbine wheel/shaft) gets balanced separately. This allows for easy interchangeability of parts in case they need replacing. This is why I am able to install a td05 20g wheel on this turbo without having to balance the entire rotating assembly. THIS IS NOT THE CASE FOR ALL turboS OUT THERE. You need to research whether your specific turbo (if it's not td05h) was balanced as an assembly or "component balanced" like I explained above. In this episode of the DirtyImpreza.com Project Rally RS (PRRS) build we cover the events from much of 2008. The 2001 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS was stripped down, seam welded, caged, painted, and re-assembled with a donor motor and transmission from another 2001 2.5RS. The roll cage was constructed by Jackson Rally and is Rally America and NASA compliant (built to FIA Article 253 specs). It has been overbuilt in some areas for extra safety and rigidity. The shell has been seam welded around the struts, transmission tunnel, cabin floor, and wheel wells. The roof skin was replaced with a JDM roof to completely delete the USDM sunroof option. Its been a long year, but finally we have a running rally car! There are still numerous smaller projects that need to be tackled before this car is stage rally ready, but some of the biggest milestones have already been reached. Thanks goes out to Kyle at Jackson Rally for his amazing fabrication work, Scott at California Auto Collision for painting the inside of the car, and the dedicated DirtyImpreza.com members who tirelessly helped to get this car where it is today. Note: For those of you who may have been following the build this episode might be a bit confusing, and you may ask Where did this other RS come from? Basically, the original 2.5RS was scrapped because it had extensive rust, and a severely damaged frame (which was revealed during its initial tear down). The decision was made to buy another identical 2001 2.5RS with a blown motor but no frame damage or rust, and transplant the vitals from the other car into this one. Takhle vypada subaru motor kteremu upadne ventil v 10000 otackach. - This is Subaru engine, broken valve in 10000 RPM. This was not poorly tuned, EGT and AFR was right, Problem was in material of one of the Cosworth valves, there was air bubble in it and it broke apart. This was not one shot as you think, this car was running few months before this and it is running again fine after repair. But we changed manufacturer of vents :-)
