2010 Formula Drift Throwdown - DMac takes 3rd at Evergreen Speedway
MONROE, WA -- Team Falken Driver Darren McNamara scored his first podium of the year by taking third in Saturday night's Formula Drift Championship at Evergreen Speedway. It was Falken's sixth podium in four races and Falken's Vaughn Gittin, Jr., who qualified first for the weekend event, continues to lead the series championship.
Final Fight at 2010 Formula Drift Irwindale
FONTANA, CA -- After finishing second in the "Title Fight" at Toyota
Speedway at Irwindale, CA, Formula Drift's final event of the year, Team
Falken's Vaughn Gittin Jr., driver of the Monster Energy/Falken Tire 2011
Ford Mustang, became the
Formula D Champion of the 2010 season.
It was the 11th podium finish for Team Falken in seven Formula D races,
a season in which the tire company's factory-supported teams dominated all
year long. Falken placed first in five of the seven events.
Three Team Falken drivers were in the top five in the final standings.
Total points between the top five drivers were close, but Gittin Jr. was
clearly the favorite after taking two wins in the six races leading up to
the Title Fight. He finished the season with 632 points. Irwindale winner
Tanner Foust eventually finished second in the standings at 568.5, and Team
Falken Driver Daijiro Yoshihara ended up fourth overall, just one point
behind third place Ryan Tuerck. Team Falken Driver Darren McNamara took
"This was Jr.'s year plain and simple, said Jonathan Bradford, Falken's
Drift Team Supervisor. "There is a lot to be said about finishing on the
podium six out of seven events this year. It was a pleasure to be involved
with a team that left everything on the track and drove with an all-in
attitude. We have successfully rewritten the record books and I would like
to personally thank the fans that rooted for Falken throughout this
"Our team's success would not be possible without the support, hard work
and dedication of our two fabrication/engineering facilities, Autosport
Dynamics (ASD) in Charlotte, NC and SPD Metalworks in Anaheim, CA," added
Nick Fousekis, Senior Manager, Consumer Marketing. "I'd also like to thank
all of the sponsors, including our newest, Monster Energy, for their faith
in Falken's program. Last but certainly not least, we thank the fans of
drifting. Without you, the sport would not have grown into that it is
The Irwindale event started off well, as Falken's Darren McNamara qualified
first, followed by Yoshihara in third. Gittin Jr. was sixth. Both
McNamara and Gittin Jr. made it to the Top 4, but McNamara lost a chance to
take a podium when he spun out in the battle for third place.
"On behalf of everyone at Falken Tire, we wish to express our best wishes
to Vaughn," said Andrew Hoit, Falken Director of Marketing. "This was a
great season for Falken, and we entertained close to 500 guests over the
weekend at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale. I'd also like to salute the
efforts of our other team members: Dai Yoshihara; Darren McNamara; Tyler
McQuarrie [who finished 8th in the standings]; and Justin Pawlak [who
finished 11th]; as well as our privateers, all of whom, like the factory
teams, competed on Falken Azenis RT-615K tires: Fredric Aasbo [13th]; Ross
Petty [19th]; "Mad" Mike Whiddett [21st]; James Deane [24th]; and Dean
Kearney, who came from Ireland. Their participation successfully enhanced
our overall effort, and we'll all join the celebration."
Drifting takes competitive motorsports to the extreme, and has
successfully attracted strong crowds, loyal fans and car enthusiasts from
all walks of life. Falken quickly realized how popular and demanding this
format would become, and since 2003, has been a solid fixture within the
sport. The focus is on skill and precision driving, as competitors in
specially prepared, high-powered vehicles intentionally execute controlled
sideways slides at high speeds through a marked course.
2010 Formula Drift Round 3 - Falken Takes 1st and 2nd at New Jersey
FONTANA, CA -- Team Falken's Daijiro Yoshihara scored his second victory in
a row at Round 3 of the Formula Drift Championship in New Jersey. Dubbed
"The Gauntlet", Wall Speedway is known for its unforgiving course layout
and harsh banked turn to in-field transition. For Falken, although a repeat
of 2009's Wall podium sweep was just narrowly missed, a Déjà Vu top 2
finish from this year's Round 2 at Road Atlanta set Yoshihara and Vaughn
Gittin Jr. once again on top of the podium with very close one, two finish.
Vaughn in the ASD built Monster Energy / Falken Tire 2011 Ford Mustang continues to lead the series
followed by Dai in his Discount Tire / Falken Tire Nissan Silvia S13 built
by SPD Metalworks.
Darren "D-Mac" McNamara fought hard for third position but that achievement
was cut short by two time Formula D Champion, Tanner Foust. The only feat
more astonishing than the battle with Foust was the fact that the vehicle
even made it to the starting line! During Top 4 competition running against
Yoshihara, Darren drifted off line and made contact with the immoveable
guardrail causing damage that required major suspension component
replacement both front and rear. "I've never seen this team work harder"
said Jonathon Bradford, Falken's Drift Team Supervisor. "Every hand
available was frantically helping to get the Sky back on track. It was a
team effort like I've never seen."
Other notable accomplishments include Justin Pawlak's 4th place qualifying
and Top 8 finish, Ross Petty's 6th place qualifying and Top 16 finish and
Tyler McQuarrie's door-to-door battle with current championship points
leader and Falken team mate, Vaughn Gittin Jr. during the Top 16 rounds.
"It's always hard when two of our team members are going head to head but
we always tell our drivers, may the best man win" declared Andrew Hoit,
Falken's Director of Marketing.
So far, Team Falken has claimed back-to-back first and second place
finishes and five podiums in three events, including all three wins.
"This season is still far from over, but our team's determination is at an
all time high" said Nick Fousekis, Falken's Sr. Consumer Marketing Manager.
"Couple focus and perseverance with world-class partners/supporters and a
product like Falken Tire, and you get a winning combination" Fousekis

championship in Monroe, WA July 9-10 at Evergreen Speedway.

2009 Formula D Round 1 - Long Beach
Beyond Paranoia by Jon Dal
LONG BEACH, CA The inaugural event in the 2009 Formula Drift season began
on the famed street course of Long Beach where Team Falken faced a very
competitive field of works drivers and privateers and successfully
qualified eight cars in the top 32 tandem competition, a new component to
Formula D this season.
This is the 4th year Formula Drift has competed on the tough track that was
previously the domain of open wheel racing. However, the increasing
popularity of drifting, especially in Southern California, has prompted its
addition to the track for a dedicated weekend. It also was the perfect
location for Team Falken to debut its new team which consists of veteran
member Vaughn Gittin, Jr., driving his brand new 2010 Ford Mustang; Daijiro Yoshihara in his
Discount Tire Lexus IS350; Tyler McQuarrie with his Nissan 350Z
Convertible; Calvin Wan, competing in a Nissan S15 Silvia; and Darren
McNamara, returning in his Sears Auto Center Saturn Sky.
Considering four out of our five team vehicles are completely new builds to
our team, we had a very successful first showing, declared Nick Fousekis,
Senior Consumer Marketing Manager, Falken Tire. This accomplishment truly
is a testament to our drivers skill, our vehicle builders capabilities, the
Azenis RT615s performance and Falkens dedication to the sport of drifting.
After the final session, overall standings had Gittin, Jr., tied for 6th;
McNamara stood in 10th; Yoshihara finished at 18th; and McQuarrie tied with
his Falken teammate Wan in 19th. All Team Falken drivers used the
lightweight and high-gripping Azenis RT615 line.
This was a great start for our expanded program as we launched our new
consumer activation area and our VIP hospitality tent, stated Andrew Hoit,
Director of Marketing, Falken Tire. We rolled out our new display, which
was the largest in the pit area, underscoring our commitment to Formula
Drift. And while we would have liked to have taken the top rungs of the
Long Beach competition, we are confident we will in the very near future.
Additionally, results of privateers competing on Falken Tires included Taka
Aono, Toyota Corolla; 5th; and Ross Petty, Nissan S15 Silvia, who also tied
for 19th, along with John Russakoff, in a Toyota Corolla.
Among the action over the two days, McNamara lost a hard fought top 16
battle to Tony Brakohiapa, and Gittin, Jr., endured a tough tandem match
against eventual second-place finisher Samuel Hubinette in the Great 8
To kick off Falkens comprehensive marketing program tied to its expanded
motorsports efforts, Dai Yoshihara helped give away a special
Falken-Americas Tire guitar to James Warner, a member of the U.S. Coast
Guard stationed in San Diego. Additional promotional items were handed out
by Falkens new group of Spokesmodels who attracted a large crowd throughout
the two-day event. Guests of Falken were treated to the companys new
The full complement of activation area, hospitality rig and factory support
will travel to all seven rounds this year. Team Falken will next compete in
Formula D on the proving ground at Road Atlanta, May 8-9. Prior to Round 2,
rigorous vehicle testing will take place for all Team Falken drivers.
2011 Formula Drift Round 1 - JTP Dominates Long Beach
Team Falken started the 2011 Formula Drift season the way it finished last
year, with one of its factory drivers on top of the podium. Justin Pawlak,
in just his second year with the tire manufacturer, took his inaugural
first place at the Long Beach opening round, with Team Falken teammate
Daijiro ("Dai") Yoshihara in third. Before a capacity crowd, Pawlak
took the victory on board his 2011 Ford Mustang with a new engine built by
Ford Racing and Roush-Yates and ran on Falken's Azenis RT615K, as did all
other Falken team members. Pawlak qualified 11th, while Yoshihara was
second among the top 32, alerting the other competitors he was the driver
to beat on the streets of Long Beach. While Defending Formula D Champion
Vaughn Gittin, Jr., struggled in qualifying, he was an important part of
the weekend, meeting and greeting his fans as well as supporting the rest
of the Falken team in the main event. Among the Falken "inter-team
competition," Pawlak beat Darren McNamara in the top 16 round, and Justin
went on to best Dai in the Top 4, completing a "One More Time." Justin
beat Matt Powers in the final, while Dai defeated 2009 Formula D Champion
Chris Forsberg to earn third.
"Justin earned this win through timing and endurance," declared Jonathan
Bradford, Team Falken's Formula Drift manager. "He has grown rapidly over
the past 12 months, and it is fitting that he would take his first podium
as a Falken team member at one of our home tracks." Falken continues
to excel in activating its marketing efforts in association with Formula
Drift and the strong crowds of drift fans in Southern California. With a
new team of Falken Spokesmodels in the paddock next to the company's
multiple support trailers, Falken hosted 350 representatives and guests
from both Monster Energy Drink and Ford Racing in their hospitality region.
"This is an important victory for us because the race is in our backyard
and we had a lot of fans, customers and Falken Tire enthusiasts in the
stands and the paddock," said Nick Fousekis, Falken's Director of
Motorsports Marketing and Events. "We've proven all the work the team and
each individual driver have done during the off-season successfully moved
Falken up another level, and we'll keep climbing all season long. We also
appreciate the tremendous support from car builders Autosport Dynamics and
SPD." After the first round, Pawlak is at the top of the Championship
standings, Yoshihara third, while McNamara is in 10th. Final Falken
teammate Tyler McQuarrie finished in 11th. Ross Petty, a long-time
independent competitor running Falkens, placed 14th. Round two will
be held May 6-7, at Road Atlanta, Braselton, GA.

The biggest, loudest closest drift event in Europe returns on exceptional
form with one of the best show-drift tracks designed. With 70mph entries,
huge sweeping corners, jumps (yes - jumps), and walls to scrape - this was
always going to be a lot of fun.
In the end, it turned into one of the best top 32's ever seen, and the
standard of driving was gobsmacking. The event was comparable in atmosphere
and skill to the RedBull world championship finals with Formula D last year
- a testament to how hard JDM have worked on this event, and also how much
the skill level has improved yet again within Europe.
