2014 Mercedes Concept S Class Coupé - Driving Scenes
Concept S-Class Coupé: An outlook on the new top-of-the-line model -
Sensual clarity as an expression of modern luxury
Traditionally the top of the Mercedes-Benz product range is occupied by the
grand coupé. With the Concept S-Class Coupé the company will provide a
concrete vision of the next model generation at the International Motor
Show (IAA) in Frankfurt: with its gorgeous appearance and self-assured
style it embodies the design philosophy of sensual clarity. In the interior
with its spectacular architecture and truly exclusive appointments the
four-seater defines the state of the art of modern luxury.
"The new S-Class Saloon was received enthusiastically in the market and
perfectly lives up to its role as a representative of the power of
innovation of Mercedes-Benz", says Dr Joachim Schmidt, Member of the
Management Board of Mercedes-Benz Cars, Sales & Marketing. "On the S-Class
Coupé as the traditional top of our product range the designers take
advantage of their additional freedom and thus create an automotive
Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design at Daimler AG, adds: "The Concept
S‑Class Coupé combines tradition and emotion, and is a symbol for the
embodiment of our design style of sensual clarity. The perfected design
with self-assured style and the highly exclusive appointments make the
coupé a true design icon and an expression of modern luxury".
Design: sensual clarity at its most beguiling
Sensual clarity as an expression of modern luxury -- this was the focus for
the designers, and is the design philosophy of Mercedes-Benz. The aim is to
create clear contours and smooth surfaces that stage high tech while
exuding emotional appeal. The sensual clarity is reflected in the core
design values of tradition, emotion and progressivism. These are the
guiding star, and are accentuated differently depending on the model.
Mercedes-Benz creates a bridge between modernity and the avant-garde,
between tradition and progressivism. Each model series has an assigned role
and a very specific character, depending on the attributes on which the
design focusses. And yet a Mercedes-Benz is always recognisable as a
Mercedes-Benz. Because in addition to incorporating new stylistic
developments, and in the interests of keeping tradition alive, the
designers draw from a gene-pool of styling features typical of the brand.
"Design needs the sublime! Because design is the best brand ambassador. At
the centre of our work is sensual clarity as an expression of modern
luxury, because this is precisely what gets to the heart of our brand
philosophy -- the bipolarity of intelligence and emotion", says Wagener.
The exterior: flowing profile of perfect proportions
The flowing profile of the Concept S-Class Coupé embodies sensual clarity
in a modern way. It is characterised by typical rear-wheel drive
proportions, which are emphasised by the Mercedes-typical signature, the
dropping line. The long bonnet with distinctive lines and powerdomes, the
cowering greenhouse with high beltline, the accentuated wheel arches as
well as the 21-inch wheels (tyres at front 265/35 R 21, at rear 295/35 R
21) and the visually broad rear substantiate the claim of the Concept
S-Class Coupé as a masterpiece of automotive refinement. With a wheelbase
of 2945 mm the coupé measures 5050 mm in length, 1958 mm in width and 1409
mm in height.
Positively arched surfaces give the Concept S-Class Coupé a sensual
character. The sculpted appearance lends it classic elegance that forms a
perfect symbiosis with the modern-progressive design idiom.
The view from the side is marked by the dropping line in keeping with the
emotional character of the vehicle. It underscores the brand-typical
proportions like a signature. The lines are deliberately reduced to the
basics. This creates a timeless clarity.
The creative interaction of various design elements lend the Concept
S-Class Coupé a superior and self-assured front: at the centre of the
vehicle front is the three-dimensional and further evolved diamond radiator
grille, whose structure is defined in this case by rectangular, dark
chrome-plated elements. It bears the central Mercedes star and one blade.
The full-LED headlamps with their iconic eyebrows as daytime driving lamps
lend it an extremely self-assured and distinctive gaze. On the Concept
S-Class Coupé the eyebrows have been further advanced with a semicircular
counter-swish. The diamond-look of the headlamps and the tail lamps
underline the luxurious appointments of the show car.

2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe 640i - Driving Scenes
Inspiring elegance in motion: The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe.
Once again BMW is advancing into a new vehicle segment with the
introduction of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. Following the convertible and
the Coupe in the BMW 6 Series, this new exclusive model is the true
embodiment of aesthetics, sportiness, comfort and luxury in perfect form.
The lean elegance of this vehicle, the very first four-door Coupe in the
history of BMW, is truly an exceptional phenomenon. Powerful engines and
the advanced chassis technology contribute to a sporty and dynamic driving
experience. The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is also distinguished by exclusive
features and equipment, roominess for rear passenger comfort and remarkable
advanced functionality that is unusual even for an upscale, four-door
Coupe. For example, folding rear seatbacks and an auxiliary third seat are
among the unique design features that contribute to the car's versatility.
"Like no other BMW, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe unites extraordinary
dynamics and the sheer good looks of a classic BMW Coupe with luxurious
appeal. It is a combination that spawns a fascinating and thoroughly
independent product personality which is, for me, symbolic of the pure BMW
aesthetic.", says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group
Driving dynamics, smooth performance and efficiency are the hallmarks of
the TwinPower turbo engines available
for the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. Furthermore, the BMW 650i Gran Coupe will
be the first model offered with a new and more efficient V8 engine that
delivers an impressive 330 kW/450 hp. This engine, just like the
six-cylinder power units in the BMW 640i Gran Coupe and the BMW 640d Gran
Coupe, is offered as standard in conjunction with an eight-speed Sport
automatic transmission and proven BMW EfficientDynamics technology.
Standard equipment on all models also includes the Driving Experience
button with ECO PRO Mode and the Auto Start Stop function.
The distinctive character of the BMW 6er Gran Coupe is unmistakable in the
sophisticated and luxurious interior, not to mention the wide range of
standard equipment, such as Xenon headlights, automatic 2-zone air
conditioning, leather upholstery and electric seat adjustment with memory
function. Innovative optional equipment available includes Adaptive LED
Headlights and the Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System.
Furthermore, the M Sports package will also be available as an option for
the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, or buyers may prefer the BMW Individual
package designed specifically for this vehicle.
The design: Sporty elegance and exclusive flair.
The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe represents an unusual synergy of extraordinary
aesthetics, the dynamics typical of a Coupe and the functional versatility
of a four-door vehicle. The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe measures 5,007
millimetres in length and 1,894 millimetres in width, with a height of
1,392 millimetres. The car's proportions are unmistakably BMW, from the
long bonnet with its bold contours to the elegance of the extended
wheelbase (2,968 millimetres) and the set-back passenger compartment. The
BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe sets new standards in terms of aesthetic design for
four-door vehicles as seen in its low height and the flat roofline that
smoothly flows into the rear end.
At the front, chrome elements, unique to the Gran Coupe, separate the air
intake from the fog lights, underlining the firm resolve expressed in the
look of this car. The standard dual Xenon round headlights (for high and
low beams) feature three-dimensional LED rings that are typically BMW in
appearance and which create a unique and functional light architecture for
the night-time driving experience. With the optional Adaptive LED
Headlights, the light rings are slightly flat at the top and bottom. High
and low beams are generated with the LED units that are positioned on
horizontal ribs across each of the light rings, projecting their light on
the reflectors facing them.
The low and graceful lines of this automobile are especially impressive
when looking at the side profile. The recessed passenger compartment
appears low and smoothly stretched because the window silhouette extends
deep into the C pillar. The frameless door windows are also a design
element indicative of a sporty Coupe. In addition, the elongated side
windows optimise the incidence of light to enhance the feeling of
spaciousness in the interior. The characteristic Hofmeister kink that flows
into the C pillar encompasses exclusively embossed "Gran Coupe" lettering
behind the glass in the lower corners of the rear windows to denote the
fascinating elegance and personality of this automobile.

The BMW 6 Series is big, luxurious and well-rounded enough to take on
competition from the Audi A5, the Jaguar XK and the Porsche 911. It's a
capable GT car designed to cross continents in record time, with enough
room for four people and all their luggage. In diesel trim, it's incredibly
Mat: Got a continent to cross and want to do it in style, comfort and very
very quickly -- well there's not many cars better for that task than the
BMW 6 Series.
It's a striking looking machine thanks to its low slung body and sloping
roof line while the aggressive face will help bully other drivers out of
the way. Still at least they will be able to admire it's pert rear end
although, obviously not for very long.
Speaking of the back end, it may look short but there's actually plenty of
room in the boot. There's also a ski hatch, which is handy for those who
plan a trip to the Alps -- well so long as you don't snowboard as that
won't fit. But then this is more of a car for skiers than boarders.
Inside the 6 Series is a beautiful place to sit. The interior design is
very modern, the build quality is solid and the car oozes luxury from every
There's leather absolutely everywhere, here on the dash, here on the door
trims, here on the arm rest. That just adds to the premium feel. So does
the super comfy seats which are heated and electrically adjustable as is
the steering column. All cars also get stuff like parking sensors, which
you will need due to the sheer size of the thing, dual zone climate so you
don't argue with your passenger over what temperature is best and sat-nav
with traffic updates to stop you arguing about which is the best route to
take. And considering this is a coupe, storage is pretty good too.
As you'd imagine the BMW 6 Series is a very quick car -- especially if you
go for the twin-turbo V8 petrol. But if
you are crossing continents you'll be slowed down with numerous fuel stops.
The smart person's choice is the 3.0-litre straight six twin turbo diesel and here's why -- it does 0-62mph in
just over 5 seconds, it has amazing low down shove, it sounds good yet, and
best of all, it can return around 50 miles per gallon which is about the
same economy as a 1.6-litre Vauxhall Astra.
The 6 Series is a very relaxing car to travel in because it is quiet, the
eight-speed auto gearbox is smooth and it's very comfy. It's even better if
you get a car with the adaptable drive package as that has a comfort mode,
which slackens off the suspension. Thing is though that system costs over
three grand and you are going to need that if you want the 6 Series to
drive as well as it can because it also includes a sport mode which not
only stiffens up the suspension but uses active anti roll bars to keep the
car completely flat through corners.
However, despite the fact the 6 series has good body control, plenty of
grip and sharp steering it's still not as fun to drive as a Porsche 911.
And despite being a whole heap bigger and heavier, it's barely much better
for carrying people in the back. Still if that's what you want to do
there's always the 6 Series Gran Coupe which is longer and has rear doors,
though that's still not as Spacious as a Porsche Panamera.
To many people this BMW will be a more attractive option not only because
it looks sweeter but it's less costly too -- especially in the case of this
super efficient yet super fast 640d diesel model.
